I bought an Amby Hammock months ago for baby due in December.

Im starting to have second thoughts and wishing I had gone with crib or moses as Im not sure if I like how they look!

Reassure me they are worth it!!!

DS is 9mths and loved his amby hammock, I thought it was great cos it went with us everywhere so he never got swapped from crib to cot to travel cot, always had his own bed whoever we were staying with, and he travelled pretty well when little! He slept well fairly young - nothing miraculous but better than many stories I've heard. We stopped using it when he was about six or seven months as he didn't fit any more, and was in his own room etc. Although I'd dreaded the change it wasn't bad at all.
And if you don't like it you can get most of your money back on ebay - they aren't that much cheaper than new there!

Very like Yorky - our DS loved his and has always been a very good sleeper - I think the Amby helped him learn to get himself back to sleep when he woke up in the night, because when the baby moves it rocks and bounces gently. It is cosy and enclosing for the baby and you can position it so that the baby is lying close beside you as you lie in bed. Yes, it does look a bit odd compared to a normal crib, but you get used to it I promise! What colour have you got? We got the raw/natural colour and it looked pretty good. I also loved the fact that you can pack it up and travel with it, which means the baby settles well when away from home becaise it is their familiar bed. You can also carry it around easily and have it in another room for daytime naps or whatever. We also had to move him into a bigger cotbed at about 8 months, but it was no problem at all.

It is the raw natural one I have!

That is encouraging that it is easy to move around the house/travel with you. I was a bit concerned about that.

Im just very anal really as it doesnt really "go" with all the other stuff!

Do I need to buy a mattress and special sheets? It is second hand.

Remember those sleepless nights pecka...? If the Amby really does help babies to sleep better I suspect you shortly won't be giving an arse about the colour scheme

I seem to remember ours came with the special mattress, but no sheets. If you haven't got these, you can order them from the Amby site (search for Amby Nature's Nest IIRC) but I actually made my own fitted sheets for it, which were just pilowcase-style tubes made the right size to slip right over the whole mattress, very easy to do.

LOL YES!!! I will indeed be looking and laughing at this thread in a few weeks time!

Making sheets? That is a nesting step too far for me, I will check out amby site.

Definately get the sheets from amby as its an odd size mattress - long and thin. I got some crib sheets but they just didn't work

ellehcim · 14/11/2007 14:20

Reluctantly I have to say it didn't work for us. I loved it on the website and nagged DH for one. Unfortunately I loved it more than DS2. It seemed good for a few weeks however at about 3 months he decided he liked sleeping with his arms out and since he's quite a large baby, the hammock was no good at all.

Ended up putting him in DS1's old cot and now he's far happier.

Mine will be being ebayed or sold on here if anyone wants it (although conscious I've not done the best sales job there!)

spugs · 14/11/2007 17:40

how much do you want for it?

ellehcim · 15/11/2007 10:42

Spugs - the last few on ebay have sold for about £85 on their own or £90 with the sheets and so I'd be hoping for around that. Let me know if you're interested or know someone who is. Otherwise my sister has her beady eye on it as a freebie!

dal21 · 15/11/2007 11:02

ds is nearly 10 weeks and loves his. is doing 3-4 stints at night.
plus - totaaly agree with the ttravelling. it collapses in 2 mins and goes whereever. i go my mums heaps and he settles as normal at night. went to ireland without it - NIGHTMARE! hated travel cot and slept with dh and i all night. not a happy baby!

AitchTwoOh · 15/11/2007 11:16

i loved it, used it everywhere as it collapses in thirty seconds and goes in the car. get the fitted sheets, they're only 12 quid for two or something, but in pooing emergencies i've used pillowcases as they're nearly long enough.
both my friends' babies loved theirs and were good sleepers and SiL is using my old one at the mo and the baby is adorable in it. But they do look a bit weird until there's a wee bundle in there, i agree. you will come to love it, i suspect. i cried when dd went out of hers, i loved sleeping with my hand on her wee feet.

honeyapple · 15/11/2007 11:31

My DS is just 10 days old and he has been sleeping in his Amby from day 1. I bought the snuggler which I would recommend as it holds him in and looks really cosy. I may just have a miracle baby as the last 2 nights he has slept from 11pm-5am ... of course this may well change! I have been swaddling him before putting him in the hammock too.

My hammock was 2nd hand too. I washed it all, took the mattress apart... and have also bought some new sheets from the Amby website.

I am hoping to use it as a travel cot soon.
