I need a bit of help. I am currently 7months pregnant with my first child. I nanny for an amazing family and their four lovely children. Cover nanny has not be found yet (they have not looked yet) .

My contract states 6months maternity leave but am I allowed to I ask and see if I can extend for 1 year as this is my first child? If this is not possible of course I will resign ASAP even though I don't want too but I just feel as my first I need that one year full focus. They are kindly allowed me to bring baby on return to work which is great but as there is 4 of them I do feel I need that 1 year off.

Also If I do resign as I have worked with them for 7 years I will still receive my maternity leave is that correct?

Thanks in advance.

Why would you resign asap? If they only say six months then I'd take that get your maternity pay and then tell them you won't be coming back.
I'd also be telling them to get cover sorted asap!

Are you in the UK? If so you get the same statutory maternity rights as everyone else, so 26 weeks of Ordinary Maternity leave plus 26 weeks of Additional Maternity Leave. As detailed here

Plus, even if you intend not to return you're generally better off resigning at the end of your maternity leave as you accrue holiday while on maternity leave.

In the UK you are entitled to take up to 52 weeks but that is broken down in to 26 ordinary and 26 additional. You need to discuss it with them really.

Sorry should of worded that better. Regarding resigning I would notify them now so that they could find a permanent nanny. I do keep mentioning sorting a nanny ASAP but no avail yet. Thank you!

You're legally entitled to a full year of leave. That trumps whatever they've put in your contract. Don't resign.

Fulltimenanny · 28/04/2021 16:51

Thank you! I was worried that wasn't the case.

Don't resign until the end of your maternity leave. Enjoy your time with your baby
