Mixed Growth in Urine

Hello!
Just coming to ask if anyone else has had this problem before?
I gave in a urine sample on Friday, had the results Monday to say that I had to give in another urine sample they didn’t say anything about the sample that I just needed to give in another one, I was also treated for thrush on Friday because I said that my discharge has increased and (sorry TMI) that it was sore down there but I wasn’t swabbed or anything and the soreness went away after a day so I didn’t use the thrush treatment because it really didn’t feel like thrush at all.
So I did another urine sample on Monday and had the results back today and was told that both samples have come back with mixed growth?
So I have to wait for a doctor to ring me back regarding my urine samples and I’m starting to think now maybe it was thrush and that’s why my urine has come back with mixed growth maybe and I’m worried that I haven’t used the thrush treatment and that I’ve had it and not treated it! (Totally my fault for not taking the pessaries and putting on the cream). Anyone else has this problem with the mixed growth? Even after giving in a second sample?
Thanks!

I’ve had a call to say she wants to give me antibiotics, and I’ve read they don’t usually give any for mixed growth, anyone else had this problem too?

Sorry I've got no idea but just wanted to bump for you, hopefully someone will come along soon that knows!

Thrush in pregnancy is often not like normal thrush at all. I had thrush in pregnancy a couple of years ago and I told the doctor it didn’t seem like thrush to me as I’ve previously suffered a lot and it wasn’t like I’d had before. I still used the medication though and it worked a treat so might be worth trying?

I would also take the antibiotics because you don’t want to risk kidney infection. UTIs alone are harmless to the baby but you’re more likely to have one turn into a kidney infection during pregnancy which can really impact the baby.

My best advice would be follow what the doctor has given you as antibiotics are safe to take in pregnancy. They’ve seen your results and history and are highly trained so they are better placed than anyone (including doctor google!) to come up with a resolution based on the context of the patient.

I hope you get things resolved Flowers

Yes. It's a common thing. You should be asked to provide a further sample for retesting first, not given antibiotics. Your sample may have been contaminated. There's an NHS guidance re how to give urine samples, it needs to be midstream and you need to clean yourself up down there in advance. Best to do it at home before each appointment. Mine proved to be contaminated as I didn't know how to do it properly haha! So I was asked to provide another sample and it was completely fine. Ask about this first and quickly - the sooner they retest the better because if you do actually need antibiotics you should be put on them quickly to avoid any complications. xx

I just reread, you shouldn't be giving samples if you're in the middle of thrush treatment, they should test you before and after the treatment ends, otherwise how would your results be reliable? xx

Hello, thanks for getting back! @Theobear88 and @PurplePansy05
I didn’t take the treatment for thrush because it honestly didn’t feel like it but feel stupid for not now! She’s given me a vaginal swab to do myself at home to send off tomorrow to make sure it’s not thrush!
I’ve already given in 2 samples of my urine and both came back as mixed growth so she said she’s going to give me antibiotics for it just incase, it’s cephalexin and have to take it twice a day for 5 days, should I ask then to retest again for the 3rd time before taking the antibiotics?
Thank you guys! Just a bit worried over here because nothing seems to have an actual answer!
Plus she said if I wasn’t pregnant they wouldn’t treat it but because I’m pregnant she wants to treat it just incase!

I think if you had 2 samples coming back as mixed growth there's a better chance there is actual mixed growth there so I'd personally take them, just make sure you check they are appropriate in pregnancy (sorry I've not had thrush in pregnancy so can't comment). Thrush can also be symptomless or have different symptoms to usual in pregnancy, sorry I know it's unhelpful! But best to treat it so you don't have any complications as a result.

Going forward make sure you do your samples correctly to eliminate the risk of them coming back with mixed growth when there is none. xx

HmmmmmmInteresting · 28/04/2021 18:02

I'd go with her advice. Both samples were obviously contaminated. You could faff around with a third but in the meantime time is matching on and you could have an infection! When looking at risk/ benefit id say I'd rather take antibiotics I didn't need than potentially walk around with an untreated UTI in pregnancy.

Did they tell you what the urine dipstick test showed?

findinggold · 28/04/2021 18:21

@PurplePansy05 yeah I’m surprised that this has happened because all of the other times I’ve given one in they’ve come back as fine or have come back with an answer so I’m surprised that the last two I’ve given have come back like this but I’ll definitely be using that trick next time with the mid stream!
Yeah I feel silly that I didn’t take the thrush treatment but I’ll send this swab off tomorrow and I’ll know for sure then if I have to take it or not.
@HmmmmmmInteresting yeah that’s very true I’m going to start them tonight now when I’ve had supper! Yeah she said that there looks like a suspected urine infection but again wasn’t a definite answer 😩 so I’ll start taking them tonight now for the next 5 days!

I’m nervous of taking antibiotics if there isn’t an infection and taking it unnecessarily 😩

UTI is different to thrush though? You'd be on different antibiotics for UTI (I had to take them) xx

Theobear88 · 28/04/2021 18:44

Antibiotics are absolutely fine to take during pregnancy OP and it’s only 5 days. If you end up with a kidney infection, you’ll be taking far more medication for far longer, believe me!

findinggold · 28/04/2021 18:46

@PurplePansy05 yeah I was given pessaries and cream last Friday for the thrush that I didn’t take and then today I was given the cephalexin for the suspected UTI, I have a swab that I have to give in tomorrow to see if I have thrush or not for definite, but haven’t been given a yes or no for a UTI so just worried if I don’t have a UTI because there’s no definite answer for the UTI or the thrush everything’s been suspected so far 😩 just afraid to take antibiotics/cream and pessaries if things haven’t been confirmed xx

@Theobear88 yeah that’s very true, I am going to take them definitely just worried if I don’t have an infection/UTI that I’m taking them just because kinda thing!

Antibiotics suitable in pregnancy are safe to take. xx
