Sleeping and pregnancy pillows

Hello ladies! I'm 14 weeks, with a small but definite bump, and trying to get into the habit of lying on my right or left side in bed. But I'm finding that it is murder on my lower back and hips, and that I'm not sleeping that well. Thinking of splashing the cash on the bbhugme pillow - anything for a good nights' sleep - but open to cheaper alternatives! I'd be super grateful if you could share your sleeping tips or pillow recommendations/experiences? Thanks!

MNHQ Update
This is an old thread, but if you’ve come across it while searching for advice or information on pregnancy pillows, our guide to the best pregnancy pillow has been recently updated to reflect current availability and new releases. It includes a wide range of options from U-shaped to J-shaped, wedges and whole-body pillows designed to support, comfort and cushion. The page has been compiled using the advice of maternity healthcare experts as well as Mumsnet user recommendations. We hope it’s helpful! Flowers

Hi, I can’t give you any brand recommendations and I’m not currently using one of the long maternity pillows but I just wanted to say that having something between your legs will help your lower back pain. I sleep with a huge square cushion pillow thing between them and my back pain has vanished. My hips hurt too when lying on them so I have a smaller softer cushion that goes under them which helps. And finally I have a double wedge cushion thing that supports my midsection.

I had this pain too and started to put an extra pillow between my thighs which really helped it... then my knees hurt so I also have a pillow between my knees/lower legs. It’s a faff... but it works. I’m now 37 weeks and poor sleep has been a real feature of the past 20 weeks! The pillows really help though/are essential.
Good luck op. Flowers

I've got a BBHugMe but I feel terrible recommending it because it's just so bloody expensive. I really really like it though and have used it a lot, including during the day when I'm working from home (You know when you're just on call after call and you think, I NEED to sit on the sofa, now? Yeah, it's great for that, having your laptop at the right position and being comfy and ensconced)

I chose the BBHugMe because I hope to have a couple of kids, so I can reuse it, I bought it early (technically I bought it before I had a miscarriage last year, and I have used it every day since, including for comfort all through the miscarriage - I'm now almost 17 weeks pregnant again), and you can use it for breastfeeding too, so I'll get lots of use out of it. I also liked the idea that it was designed by a female team of chiropractors. You can watch a lot of good videos about all the ways to use it.

I promise I don't work for them. I do think it's way too expensive, but I don't regret buying it, honestly. I'm not a big spender, I haven't started buying anything for the baby yet, and for the amount of comfort it's given me I feel like I've got decent value out of it so far, which will increase as I get bigger, hopefully!

I've heard really good things about the smaller wedge pillows too. I think it's quite personal. I didn't want one of the larger U shaped ones because I already feel like I take up too much room in the bed, and I don't like feeling too trapped if that makes sense.

Worth saying that even with the stupidly expensive pillow I don't sleep brilliantly - I think that's just pregnancy for you though. Hope you get some better sleep soon!

another vote for the bbhugme. best money I've spent in my pregnancy but this is my second and my justification is that we don't need to buy much, if any other things for the baby. I recommend it to everyone as it really is very good

FeistySheep · 28/04/2021 12:05

I think NHS guidance is sleep on your side from 28 weeks onwards? Double check though!
I used an ordinary pillow in my last preg, but have Amazon one this time and it's great www.amazon.co.uk/Niimo-Pregnancy-Breastfeeding-Pillowcase-Pink-White/dp/B084GRRK9S/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=niimo+pregnancy&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1619607872&sr=8-1
Everyone's different though :)

Bunny2021 · 28/04/2021 12:58

its expensive but I have a BBHugme and I love it. We went away for a night at the weekend and I din't take it - I was so sore the next morning.

It was recommended to me by a few people and one said "just ignore the cost, do not buy cheap, just get this pillow - I regretted not having it for my first pregnancy". My husband surprised me with it and I'm so happy with it. I don't understand why its so expensive but cost per use is worth it and you can use it afterwards for feeding as well.

FTM91 · 28/04/2021 16:56

Another vote for the bbhugme! I also use it for sitting up in bed or on the sofa and it just seems to go into the exact shape you need it to be, it's so comfy. For this reason I expect it will be excellent to help with posture for breastfeeding once baby arrives too so I'll get my moneys worth.
And I know this is shallow but another bonus is it looks nice when not being used, just a long bolster across the bed.
Look for nursery websites that offer 10% off your first order or something like that, lots of them do :)

I bought a bbhugme after my 12 week scan to start training me to sleep on my side. It's great and definitely stops any aches I would get if sleeping on my side without it (mainly back and hips from knees touching). Supportive, light and you can use it in different ways.

I still hate sleeping on my side though! I've been sleeping flat on my back since I was a kid.

Xx

DinosaurDiana · 28/04/2021 17:38

I just used a ‘V’ pillow. It was great for breastfeeding too.

ILoveFlumps · 28/04/2021 17:40

I got a long maternity pillow from Aldi. Was a lifesaver, and has since passed on to my sister to use.
Whichever brand you go for, you won't regret it.

Folklore9074 · 28/04/2021 20:34

Thanks for the recommendations everyone!

And thanks for the tip @FTM91 just seen somewhere I can get 10% off with my first order.

Linen Empire Ltd 12 FT Long C_U Shaped Deluxe Full Body Cuddly & Maternity Pregnancy Support Pillow - Made in the UK www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07HCDWRGQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_57H1SKH5JDC9V619PG45?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

I have one like this and it’s great. Not nearly as expensive and it’s lasted well (this is my second pregnancy and it’s still going strong) Really supportive and comfortable for sleep.

Jellybean81 · 28/04/2021 20:51

Another BBHugme recommendation from me. I was in hospital for a few days recently and after one night without it I had DH bring it in, it made a world of difference even with a fully adjustable hospital bed!

EdithGrantham · 28/04/2021 20:58

I went for a 12ft long u shaped one because I like to swap sides and didn't want to have to move the pillow under the covers as I thought that could be awkward. It was just cheap from Amazon and the stuffing needs re-plumping every so often but it is pretty comfortable. I can't say it's stopped all hip pain but that's more from the pressure of lying on my side than the position of my legs.

Have to say though I took full advantage of being able to sleep in whatever position I liked until absolutely necessary, I thought I may as well get comfy undisturbed sleep in as long as I could!

1boo1 · 28/04/2021 21:33

Another bbhugme here.. I got mine at around 9 weeks (wanted to get the most out of it!) and have used it every night since. Really feeling the benefits now and helps me stay on my side. Worth every penny!

jellybean13419 · 29/04/2021 12:41

BBHugMe allllll the way. You honestly will not regret it. Best purchase I have ever made and think I'll use it even after the baby is born 🤣

Allicit · 29/04/2021 12:54

Has anyone considered/tried the Bella moon? Trying to decide between that and the bbhugme?

Lou98 · 29/04/2021 13:07

I can't comment on the bbhugme as I never bought one but if you're looking for a cheaper version I love this one from Asda!
I started using it at around 13/14 weeks and I'm 36+4 now and still use it every night. I've developed SPD this pregnancy and definitely notice a difference in pain between using it and not!

ER20 · 29/04/2021 13:29

I have severe SPD, have a standard Amazon purchased pregnancy pillow, I’m nearly 36 weeks so no point now but I’ll be buying the BBHugMe one next time.
