Don't get one with a bar for the top stairs.

SHEENA1 · 13/11/2007 18:57

Hi I have botyh kinds the kind that attach to wall and the one that just tightens against the wall

I recomend the one that attaches to wall is safer rather than the other one .

3madboys · 13/11/2007 19:11

i recomend the ones that screw into the wall and dont have a bar to trip over. they also open wider than those with a bar.

at the top of our stairs we have one that is like a roller blind thing, you can get it from kiddicare, anyway its great cos when its not in use it doesnt take up any space at all.

the pressure fit ones are a pain, we constantly needed to tighten ours and my toddler could make it loose and he learnt to open it very quickly.

StrawberryMartini · 13/11/2007 19:13

this one

Expensive but when they're retracted you don't even know they are there.

MingMingtheWonderPet · 13/11/2007 19:14

I also think the ones that screw into the wall are safest too, and they open without a bar to trip over.
I did have a pressure style one, and tbh that still took all the paint off the wall and required a repair job at the end of it so please don't think they are better for the paintwork. Just as much trouble imo.

LazyLinePainterJane · 13/11/2007 19:50

We have a screw fix one and a removable one and if I had to buy another, I would get another screw in one.You don't have to worry that the child will ram them down (!), you don't have to keep resetting them and they are much safer. If you can get it to swing open against a wall and attach a hook of some sort then in the evenings when you don't need it, it's like it's not there.

scienceteacher · 13/11/2007 19:53

We only used them for the first two - the better one was the wooden one that attached to the wall. I did not like the one that had a bar that you had to step over.

derah · 13/11/2007 20:01

Yup, gotta agree, get one that screws to the wall and doesn't have a bar to trip over. I've got Lindam ones, and they've been great. My friend has got the roller blind ones and she seems happy with them. They're also very unobtrusive when open.

meglet · 13/11/2007 20:07

The basic Mothercare screw on ones are crap. My 1 year old is on the verge of opening it so we are getting a different one.

My friend has a Lindam one and they seem better.

that is the roller blind one that we have int he link up there ^

i have to say i would be very suprised by one giving way, i cant remember the exact weight they are meant to withstand but it is A LOT, and all three of the madboys have leant on it, been pushed into etc and its still going strong.

it is diff to do with one hand, which is a bit of pita but its the ONLY stairgate that my littlest one hasnt been able to open, so therefore worth its weight in gold to me

looneytune · 14/11/2007 17:35

Haven't read whole thread but recommend the type you fit to the wall and deffo has no bottom you can trip over!
