Are you getting the vaccine?

I've had a text to say I have a vaccine appointment booked, I will need to call them and make sure I'm sent to a place where they stock Pfizer or Moderna. I'm wondering what people's thought are on this that are currently pregnant?

I'm really unsure. I'm currently 18 weeks and I've read as much as I can (given the little amount of research that has taken place) on vaccines and pregnancy but they all say the same thing.

My worries are I suppose that long term they just don't know if there are any negatives affects on the babies.

However I had a email from my boss about going back into work in the coming weeks so it looks like things are slowly getting back to normal - the thought of being around loads of people gives me anxiety 😟

Anyone else feeling abit confused?

Hey!! I had my first vaccine Pfizer back in January not knowing I was pregnant at the time, I had my second one this month and all has been well, they got a doctor to talk to me about it they were really reassuring

Crazycatlady83 · 27/04/2021 19:49

I had my first one today! Currently feeling absolutely fine! I had been sent away from two centres where I had an appointment over the last couple of days because it was a AZ day (even through my GP surgery had thought it was a Pfizer day!) The GP vaccine coordinator specifically booked me the Pfizer jab and I went on a “second jab” day to specifically make sure I was seen!

I spoke to the senior doctor at the centre and she said she had seen lots of pregnant women. She was very reassuring and indeed I got the impression that it was now “standard”. I am 30 weeks pregnant and due a c-section at 39 weeks. She did advise I not wait the 12 weeks for the second jab because, she said “you don’t want to go into hospital without being fully protected” (which is worrying!) She emailed my GP to make sure they book me for the second one in about 7 weeks time.

I definitely struggled with my decision. However as the country reopens, I was getting anxious about meeting people and everyone starting to relax now “the vulnerable have been vaccinated” (when all the vulnerable haven’t been vaccinated!) Even my own parents are quite happily breaking the rules (meeting people indoors and lying to me that they haven’t) so I felt backed into it a little. But equally I don’t want to go into hospital for an operation and potentially get covid when I have a newborn to care for! So so much to think about!

In the end I felt the risks of the known (the terrible harm having covid can do to a pregnant woman and/or the unborn baby) outweighed the risks of the unknown (long term effects - which I’m not sure we will/would ever know or be able to “pin” on the jab anyway)

Good luck

Had my 1st Pfizer shot three weeks ago and get my second tomorrow. Relieved to get getting vaccinated.

Rubyrecka · 27/04/2021 20:06

Yes this is it isn't it, the world is reopening and I don't want to be left vulnerable. I've read the effects of covid if it gets severe in pregnant women and it's pretty compelling.

It was only today when I thought 'I'm in work tomorrow!', that I started to get anxious where as I haven't before. And I instantly thought I have to get that jab booked in (I've cancelled it once before cos i just wasn't sure!)

Does anyone know what the deal is with whooping cough / flu vaccines and the covid jab? I've got whooping cough and flu booked in tomorrow not sure how long I need to wait until I get the covid jab, if at all. I'll be a walking vaccine!!

No, I won't be getting it whilst pregnant as not enough research to know if will affect in years to come

I will have it.

This article about new research into the dangers of giving birth with Covid is sobering reading. You’re 22 times more likely to die if Covid positive during childbirth.

Crazycatlady83 · 27/04/2021 20:40

They asked if I had any other vaccines within 7 days. if the answer is yes, I don’t know the impact on whether I would have been allowed the jab (luckily I had my whooping cough at 25 weeks) Perhaps call the helpline and ask? Or your midwife?

Rubyrecka · 27/04/2021 20:49

@Crazycatlady83 yes I've text my MW will see what she says in the morning

I had the astra zeneca jab, the day before I found out I'm pregnant. I rung my drs panicking and they said they would be more concerned if I didn't have the vaccine because I work in health care.
I'm also friends with a lass who caught covid when she was 25 weeks pregnant and ended up giving birth and her baby is really really ill and she almost died. it was horrible and scary and has been confirmed that all of that happened because she caught covid. xxx

Rubyrecka · 27/04/2021 21:24

@vixey that's awful about your friend I hope her and baby will be okay

I had my AstraZeneca jab a few weeks ago (before they said they were recommending pregnant women and under 30s have one of the others - I'm both!), and my midwife advised to go ahead and get the second AZ jab now I've had the first. I feel much more relaxed having had it done. The known risks of covid, for me, outweigh the potential risks of the vaccine, especially as my not-very-expert understanding is that the AZ jab is quite similar to the flu/whooping cough ones which we're advised to get.

For flu and whooping cough, you have to wait at least a week - I didn't know this and was initially sent away and had to rebook! It's a pain that the info isn't readily available, I searched and found nothing.

That's interesting. Maybe I will get the covid jab first and rearrange the whooping cough and flu jab for a weeks time. Probably best to get the covid jab done ASAP.

I'm 17 weeks and have been feeling the same as you. Very conflicted about the research and lack of data on long term impact on the baby.

If things stay as they are now I have decided to wait until the baby is born before having the vaccine.

DH and I are very fortunate in that we can both work from home and are able to continue doing that this year. Since we got our bfp we have essentially been shielding - working from home, getting all groceries delivered and not going into shops etc. My boss has been v understanding and doesn't expect me back in the office.

I do feel a bit envious that my friends are able to meet etc but I figured by the time I'm offered the vaccine its only a few more months to continue shielding.

If however the rates sky rocket or I were to suddenly be called in the office then I would consider having it.

Patapouf · 27/04/2021 22:36

I'm really anxious about this. I had the first AZ jab 2 months ago and I'm 6 weeks PG now so not sure whether to have the second or not? I'm also under 30 so was worried about AZ anyway. Confused

PinkPlantCase · 27/04/2021 22:53

I’m not having it because I’m worried about the long term impacts but I’m 34 weeks so not long left! Easy for us to basically shield until baby is born.

If I was around 20 weeks then I would probably have it as it will surely get harder to avoid exposure as the return to normal continues.

If I had the choice I’d wait until after the 20 week scan just so if there were any fetal abnormalities picked up then I couldn’t link them to the vaccine.

Theobear88 · 27/04/2021 22:53

No!

FirstTimeMummy2021 · 28/04/2021 08:32

I've been weighing this up too. There is data coming out of America which supports pregnant women having the vaccine but in my head, its still too soon to know long term impact. Its such a personal decision about whether its the right thing for you or not. For me, I'm happy with not socialising massively until baby is here - I'm happy to get the vaccine if I'm breastfeeding. I am in third trimester now and cases are low where I live. If they increase then I may feel differently but for now, I'm happy wearing a mask and not socialising indoors with anyone for the rest of my pregnancy!

Sunflowerx · 28/04/2021 08:45

I'm so conflicted on whether or not to get it. I'm 27 but have a high BMI so have already been offered the vaccine before guidance changed for pregnant woman, so I really don't know what to do!

Rubyrecka · 28/04/2021 09:13

I've read the data from America also, and the intercovid study they've done across a few counties.

But again, I think we know that there's a significant risk of short term effects it's the unknown of the long term effects that's the issue and weighing up the unknown vs getting covid and potentially having nasty side effects. I keep going back and forth!!

My midwife has said to wait 2 weeks in between vaccines.

Not a significant risk short term *

If I can get Pfizer or Moderna then yes I will have the vaccine due to the more severe risks of covid in the 3rd trimester to pregnant women and risks of premature birth and stillbirth.

They have to give you either and not the AZ so make sure u let them know when you book x

I've just read this which was a bit reassuring as it's a MRNA vaccine which has been around for a while.

OP posts:
Ughmaybenot · 28/04/2021 09:40

I had the first vaccine back at the start of January as I work for the nhs, and have been at work the whole time as normal. I’m now 13 weeks pregnant and declined the second vaccination back when it was offered.
I’m quite confident actually that baby would be unaffected by taking the second dose, but we don’t know that for sure and that’s what it came down to really. We live in a very low risk area where rates have always remained low and in terms of my personal risk factor, again, it’s quite low.
Neither decision is wrong, and it’s such a personal choice.
