Hi everyone, I’m totally freaking out. I’m 6w and suffering incredible nausea so I have started eating raw ginger the past few days which has definitely helped. HOWEVER, I just googled the safety and have seen it can cause miscarriage?????? We suffered a MC right before this so I’m panicking massively now.xx

I've never heard this OP and I thought it was normal to eat ginger to help with nausea. It's not on the nhs list of foods to avoid so don't worry about it. There will probably be lots of things you eat during your pregnancy that you then worry about after. It's normal.

Cherryblossom2021 · 27/04/2021 09:29

Hi @Mosshead348 first congratulations on ur pregnancy, I’m finding the only thing actually helping me right now is freezing cold milk, I couldn’t stomach anything ginger!!
Google is out worst enemy we all read way too much into it! ... it’s awful isn’t it we do anything find reassurance and get ourselves stressed!! I don’t even know if milk is any good for me but I can’t sit at my computer trying to work and wanting to throw up so I’m drinking it!!

SmidgenofaPigeon · 27/04/2021 09:39

Google ANYTHING and there’ll be some page which says it causes miscarriage. Try and stick to NHS/science based advice or you’ll drive yourself up the wall.

BeastOfBODMAS · 27/04/2021 09:39

I have never heard this and there’s no mention of it in any of the NHS guidance I have seen, it definitely suggests ginger.

Eating it raw seems like it might be quite hard work though!
I have been making rhubarb and ginger compote to have with plain porridge or yoghurt for breakfast. Kale or greens stir fried with ginger, chucked over noodles for lunch.
I can dig out the recipe for the compote if you like?

All sympathies to you, it’s horrible but it will pass. Speak to your GP for medication if you are struggling to cope.

Ladies you are all wonderful, thank you so much for putting my mind at rest. It is true that I will search and search until something tells me the negative which is just silly. I have an early scan tomorrow so hoping that will calm be down a little however I’ve heard this can make you more anxious!!

@Cherryblossom2021 congrats to you too! Weirdly milk has also been a saviour for me which a lot of people can’t understand, I have been dunking a ginger nut biscuit in ur mind you 😂

@BeastOfBODMAS honestly eating it raw is horrific but the nausea has been so bad I’ve not been able to get out my bed for 2 days it’s the only thing that helps. If you have the recipe to hand that sounds amazing!!!!xx

Ah i saw this too but it was specifically a study where the question was "do excessive amounts of ginger cause miscarriage" and was referring to over a 1g supplement tablets of concentrated ginger. It still wasn't conclusive!! I took ginger capsules of 500mg and never took more than two a day and I'm 17 weeks now

Synthesiser · 27/04/2021 10:05

I had ginger thins from IKEA and mints

Seeline · 27/04/2021 10:05

I think it's more normal to eat ginger biscuits or put a piece of ginger in hot water, or ginger tea, rather than just eating ginger roots but if it works!!

Personally I cannot face anything ginger after trying it to cure my bad sickness/nausea 20 years ago!

If it gets too bad, please speak to your GP - medication is available and usually pretty effective.

@Mosshead348 here it is!

I used loads of fresh ginger instead of the stem ginger and vanilla flavouring instead of pods. It’s been keeping my sickness manageable until lunchtime.

TTCat39 · 27/04/2021 10:24

Hi @Mosshead348 Congratulations! I'm only 4weeks 3days but I'm not looking forward to sickness kicking in! I hope your early scan goes well - it's something I'm thinking about, as this is my first pregnancy and I won't have a midwife appointment until I'm 9weeks 3days, which seems an eternity away! Let us know what happens when you're there and whether you'd recommend it? Thanks

TakeYourFinalPosition · 27/04/2021 10:28

@Mosshead348 Best of luck for your scan! I had one yesterday at 6w exactly - sadly it was too early to see a heartbeat using external ultrasound for me, which has sent me into a blind panic even though I know it's normal, so I'm just passing this along so you're prepared in advance... the sonographer was nice but quite blunt and said they couldn't confirm viability before a heartbeat is seen, and I have been feeling really anxious since. I was warned to book it for 8 weeks earliest, but I had some spotting so the EPU scanned me instead.

Fresh ginger tea has been helping a lot with my nausea... I must be up there with top ginger consumers right now Grin

TransverseBabies · 27/04/2021 10:55

If you have terrible nausea, especially if it's ruining your day/stopping you working/stopping you get out of bed, go to your GP and ask for medication. There are lots of things which can help with nausea and there are no medals for just suffering through it/ just trying natural remedies (none of which ever worked for me).

Mosshead348 · 27/04/2021 12:50

Thanks so much ladies, google is my enemy and I’ve decided to stop searching. Think my OH is going to take my phone off me 😂

I’m so so nauseous and that’s now day 3 of not being able to get out my bed, haven’t been able to work, but I’m too scared to take any medication from the doctor just in case because of previous MC ☹️

@TTCat39 congratulations to you too! My early scan is actually with NHS due to previous MC but I think if not I’d probably book a private one so I’ll let you know how I get on!! Some people say they see a lot at 6 weeks others not so I think if you do go private try to wait until at least 7 weeks xx

@TakeYourFinalPosition I also had one last week with EPU and found the sonographer to be the same which sent me into a wild frenzy and it doesn’t help when others can see everything at the same stage! But just need to try and remember we are all developing at different stages! Are you going back for another scan next week?xx

Thanks @Mosshead348 ! I am thinking of having the private early scan at 7+1, although at the moment I can't bring myself to book it in case I don't get that far. First time pregnancy at 39 and I'm taking in all of Dr Google's bad news predictions! Confused
