Pregnant and starting University

Hi

I have just found out that I’m pregnant ( 2 weeks) I had a MC a couple of months ago and literally had sex once that I had to stop because it felt uncomfortable but turns out that’s all I needed to fall pregnant again.

After the MC I got into university to do a pdge in primary teaching. I’ve already handed my notice into work and they have found a replacement already. So, now I don’t know what to do! Should I have an abortion and go to uni it’s a 1 year course? Or be unemployed and start university next August? Baby would be around 8months.

My partner has a steady income and we live at his parents ( we are looking to buy) I do have a big family and so does he so we would be supported.

I’m worried having an abortion would trigger some of the dark emotions I had after the MC and I really don’t want to go back their but at the same time is it for the best until I get my career?

Any advice if you’ve fallen pregnant during a pdge course or on what to do.

Thanks

Hello, I have just been through a similar situation.
I had a mc last summer and then about two weeks later got onto a postgrad course at uni. I then found out I was pregnant about two months into the course and for me personally its been fine, lecturer's have been so accommodating with any appointments I need to attend or if I'm not feeling well. Its coming up to final exams at the moment and I am heavily pregnant, they have given me plenty of options in regards to extra time, rest breaks and even defering some or all of the exams until I am ready to take them in a couple of months but the course is done =). There is plenty of support at most Uni's so you will have options, however only you know what's best for you ...... I am also in the middle of changing my career hence going back to Uni but the main thing to remember is you're health is you're wealth.

Hi,

Thank you! This has been great advice and I really do appreciate it. I’ve not had anyone to turn too as I’m so confused.

However, after hearing comments like this I’ve decided to speak to student union and see what my options would be. I really hope I can continue on the course because 1 I’m out of a job and 2 I really want it and I know I could do it. I get it would tough.

Did you have placements? Will you be finishing soon?

Congratulations on your pregnancy. MC are absolutely horrendous and honestly I don’t think I could bring one on myself. It still feels so raw.

Thanks again x

As a teacher, I can't imagine doing the pgce year pregnant but think it would be better to do it pregnant compared to doing it with a baby/toddler.

I vote keep baby, complete your pgce and then do you nqt year on a part time basis over 2 years. If you want to qualify as a teacher, I think this would be the easiest route albeit still very tough!

Teacher here. I would speak to the course manager about logistics followed by the student Union regarding finances.

My best friend was in a similar position to you when we both trained together, and was unable to complete the year as obviously needed time off for birth/baby, so had to wait until the next wave of placements in the next academic year to complete (you have to have a certain number of days placement to pass). Had some big financial implications, and she found the placement after baby very difficult as was rusty but was expected to be at second placement level in order to pass.

Not impossible by any means, but need to consider a 1 year course may take 2 years with not much income/support. Your course manger and SU would be able to give you more info.

Hi I just wanted to say thank you for your response to my post. It’s been a huge help!

I spoke with the union today and I’ve got more options than I thought. Basically I can do the first semester then got of on medical suspension and rejoin the following January and finish my second & third semester. Meaning I will have 1 year out but still manage to keep my student allowance for most of it & I am entitled to more benefits than I thought. I will graduate 2023 and start probation in the August when the little one will be 20 months.

My heart is as telling me to keep this little bundle and I have to go with that. I know I would be heartbroken if anything was to happen again so why would I want to bring it on. Think I just panicked but your messages have made me see what truly matters to me, so thank you!

Wishing you all an abundance of love & health ❤️😊

Glad you’ve gotten advice and feel able to make an informed decision about Uni :)

If your heart is saying you want to keep baby, and you feel financially it’s doable having spoke to uni then absolutely, go for it! It’s your body and your baby. If you can get through teacher training with a baby, you will be fine when you qualify!

Good luck, and congratulations ❤️
