When I had my first, I was consultant led and the appointments were no different to my routine community midwife appointments so just blood pressure and protein checks etc. All the usual boring stuff

There will be something in your medical history or obstetric history which flags you as high risk. Any conditions, previous pregnancy/labour problems/ high bmi?

I had the same this time - had Gestational Diabetes last pregnancy, also EMCS so I think it is one of the two that flagged to be consultant led this time.

She mentioned birth plan a lot - i.e whether I wanted VBAC or elective c section, so I think it is more to do with that.

Other than a few extra questions, the appointment was no different to previous (bloods, urine, weight etc., and general health questions) x

I had my first smear last june which came back abnormal and my sister died years ago at 7 weeks due to heart problems and also there is high blood pressure in family so these could be the reasons? And just i got it today and its for Wednesday was just panicking it was something bad and didnt know what to expect thats all. Will i still see a midwife or just be consultant from now on??

You’ll see a mix of both community midwife and consultant

The midwife really should’ve explained to you why you were being referred to the hospital. Any chance you could call her and ask?

Ah thank you, yeah ive rang her but she was busy so waiting on her ringing me back to explain things better but thanks to you ladies i understand a bit better now thank you

Agree with @Theobear88 do call your midwife to discuss. She really should have mentioned she was referring you, but it sounds like from what you've said there are a couple of things in your history which would mean they would want you seen by a Consultant (lots of women are sent doesn't mean they think there is something wrong with you).

You may find the Consultant sees you and that's it and you are passed back to midwifery or you may stay under them.

Even if you are under Consultant care you still have normal midwife checks.

I was consultant led for all my pregnancies. At the appointments I would always see the midwife first and then I would see the doctor (often it would be Registrar and not consultant). Honestly, the most stressful thing about the appointments was the terrible parking!!!

Hi op. I had a consultant appointment at 22 weeks following complications from previous deliveries. The midwife flagged this at my first appointment and she made a note in my orange folder about the reason for the referral - is there anything noted in yours?

Laurenh1995 · 26/04/2021 14:29

Thank you ladies yeah it all makes sense now was just confused coz it never got mentioned when a seen midwife the first time thats all, i am waitimg on midwife ringing me back too explain it all in detail. But i understand more now.

As others have said, could be several things?

  • high BMI
  • Older age
  • Your family medical history or your medical history

They should have told you though.

Laurenh1995 · 26/04/2021 17:14

Midwife rang and explained and apologied she didn't mention at first appointment. Thank you ladies
