"A negative" blood type

Hey, so I had my blood test results back the other day, everything was all good except from my blood being "a negative". It's my first pregnancy and I'm just worried. It's really hard not to worry when you hear all different story's etc. Has anyone else experienced this? X

It’s absolutely fine, please don’t worry. You’ll just need a couple of injections - ‘Anti-D’ - one in second trimester (I think) and one post birth. They’re just to protect you if you get pregnant again, really. It’s totally standard and nothing to worry about, honestly.

I've got a rhesus negative blood type and have not long had my first baby. I just needed one routine anti-d injection at 28 weeks. My baby also has a rhesus negative blood type so I didn't need another injection after he was born. If you have any bleeding or an accident you might need more anti d injections whilst you are pregnant to stop your blood becoming sensitised, but your midwife can advise. In my area they test the baby's blood after they are born (from the cord, I believe) and if your baby turns out to have a rhesus positive blood type then you may need another anti-d injection within a certain time frame after giving birth.

Yes I'm A negative and currently 38 weeks pregnant, I had one injection around 22 weeks or so, it's nothing to worry about. Although if you have sex and start bleeding afterwards I think they may need to give you an additional anti d, something like that. I can't quite remember fully..but please don't worry.

FeistySheep · 26/04/2021 12:12

Nothing to worry about at all. You need a jag after birth, and also you might need one if you have any bleeding from the second trimester onwards, so make sure you tell your midwife if this happens.

Even if you didn't have the jag, it wouldn't hurt this baby anyway. It would be the next pregnancy where it would cause problems. So there is literally nothing to worry about in terms of this pregnancy. But get the treatment offered in case you want another baby in future.

I've got a negative blood group and they tested baby who also has a negative blood group so I didn't need any extra intervention or treatment. It is very straight forward though if you do, definitely nothing to worry about x

It’s fine, I’m rhesus negative too and 2 kids positive, just had to have anti D injection. Don’t stress OP and congrats on your pregnancy 💐

4PawsGood · 26/04/2021 19:10

Do you understand about blood groups? I can give you a very simple explanation if you need. People are right above though. Being negative isn’t bad, it just could cause problems in pregnancy if you don’t have the injection. But you do get it, so that’s ok. M

Blood groups can be

A
B
AB
O

and each of those is either negative or positive. (Rhesus negative or positive is the full name.)

*stray M there!

Fruityfriday · 26/04/2021 19:14

Nothing to worry about I'm a negative aswell. But my partner was also, I still had to have the anti d though. I don't know why.

Tinkling · 26/04/2021 19:16

Yup. I am also negative. You just need an injection after birth.

Ihaveoflate · 26/04/2021 19:16

I am A- but my baby is also (tested in utero) so I didn't need the injections. I'm not sure if testing the baby's blood type in pregnancy is standard across all trusts though.

Operasinger · 26/04/2021 19:17

I'm A negative and I've had three children. As others have said, you just need a couple of Anti D injections, there's nothing to worry about.

Fruityfriday · 26/04/2021 19:18

Out of interest I'm A- and partner was B- but I still had to have the anti d. Why would this have been?

BrownEyedGirl80 · 26/04/2021 19:19

I've got it and had to have anti d injections. If you get any trauma to your bump.i.e a accidental knock or something you have to have one then aswell.

happytoday73 · 26/04/2021 19:20

Just in case he isn't the dad.. They prefer to air on side of caution

NoSquirrels · 26/04/2021 19:22

@Fruityfriday

In case you weren’t in fact 100% your DP was the father of the child - some women might not be sure and don’t want to admit it, or know full well it’s someone else’s but can’t admit it/don’t think it’s important. It’s for maternal health reasons in the next pregnancy in case you did happen to be wrong about your DP being rhesus beg/father of the baby being blood group unknown.
Chelyanne · 26/04/2021 19:27

Being rhesus-D negative is not a big deal for your 1st pregnancy. You will be given anti-D injections to help prevent you developing antibodies that can effect future pregnancies at 28wk and after birth if baby has Rh-D+ blood. They will also offer the anti-D if you have knocksto bump or bleeds during pregnancy. There is a page on the NHS website all about it and possible complications that can occur.

I have negative blood but my husband does too so it is not an issue for me as it is impossible for us to produce a positive baby, they do still offer me the anti-D injection at 28wk "just in case".

purplejungle · 26/04/2021 19:38

@NoSquirrels @Fruityfriday yes this. I was 100% sure dh (also rhesus negative) was the father so I declined anti d. The midwife was very nervous about it no matter how much I told her dh was definitely the father! It's up to you at the end of the day, but midwives often recommend it for that reason.

Crappyfridays7 · 26/04/2021 19:49

I had x4 babies am A-ve had anti a lot of times with baby one as I bled - all the way through was in hospital a lot of the time. The -ve blood wasn’t the cause but I got anti d every time. Bled also with no2 had x2 anti d.
Fine with babies 3&4 no issues just prophylaxis at 28 weeks or whatever and a dose afterwards. All healthy babies. Don’t worry just go to your checkups and the hospital/clinic staff will answer questions/keep you right

Samia107 · 26/04/2021 20:59

I am reshus negative and I have 3 kids you'll be okay they give you the anti D shot

xx200xx · 26/04/2021 21:37

Thank you everybody and congratulations on your pregnancy's xxx
