Do pessaries work in induction

Being induced on Wednesday at 38 weeks
Can you opt to just go straight on the drip to not waste time?
All I've heard is the pessaries don't work 🙄

Induced at 38 weeks. Needed a 12 hr and a 6hr but they worked and waters went on their own.

ellesbellesxxx · 22/04/2021 21:43

My waters went, I was 4cm and I started contracting 20 mins after pessary went in... when they examined me, they thought I would be there for the long haul as I was only just showing signs of thinning and no dilation !
That was at 36 weeks!

Babykoala1 · 22/04/2021 22:01

Mine worked very fast. First baby and at 39 weeks, started getting contractions within the hour of it being inserted and baby was here shortly after. I actually almost had her in the induction suite as the midwives didn’t believe I was in active labour and refused to examine me until I was bleeding on the floor!

Wheresmycider · 22/04/2021 22:02

Worked for me.

Ginger1982 · 22/04/2021 22:07

Didn't work for me. Eventually had to have waters broken, put on drip and ended up with ECS.

foxyroxyyy · 22/04/2021 22:15

Worked for me. I was 38 weeks on the dot. One pessary.

Lovelivingbythebeach3 · 22/04/2021 22:18

Not for me, started induction Sunday evening, baby born by c section Thursday evening!!

louisiannah · 22/04/2021 22:19

Worked for me 3rd time round took a longggg time though and very painfulGrin

polkadotpixie · 22/04/2021 22:22

Didn't work for me. My waters had already broken but no contractions so I had the pessary and nothing. I then had the drip for 21 hours and still only got to 6cm so had an EMCS

Peasuper · 22/04/2021 23:13

Didn’t work for me. Had kiddo by section 36 hours after pessary

Nat6999 · 23/04/2021 00:38

I had pessary due to pre eclampsia at 36+5, 24 hours later I was 1cm dilated, they broke my waters, contractions started, 4 hours later had epidural as pain was horrific, drip put in, 12 hours later only 2cm, drip was doubled & doubled again, 12 hours later was only 4cm, doctor insisted on doubling drip again even though midwife questioned it, 12 hours later was nearly 8cm, checked 4 hours later had gone back to 6cm, was rushed to theatre for EMCS, had massive PPH & was put in high dependency, started with HELLP syndrome, major organs started failing 2 hours later, was there just over 48 hours, had 3 pints of blood & drip to bring BP down. That is why I say ask for what chance of normal delivery, if 50% or less then insist on a C section, my body was on the point of packing in when I got to theatre, add on PPH & everything else I feel lucky I got out more or less in one piece.

My daughter. Pessary inserted at 1am. 0cm dilated. cervix hard not favourable at all. I went to sleep and Contractions started around 2pm. At 11pm, they took it out then my waters came gushing and the plug came out. It then took from 11pm to 7am to get to 5cm which is when they took me to my labour room. Got an epidural. And dd came at 9pm. So I went in Monday night (pessary inserted after midnight though) and baby born Wednesday, home Thursday!

I don't think it's too bad considering I was not even ready for labour !

OliverBabish · 23/04/2021 00:49

Worked each time for me (induced three times now!)

First time had drip after pessary removed to get the party started (39w) - pessary 4pm, baby born by 3pm next day

Second time (37w) had the pessary at 5pm, baby born by 12pm the next day

Third time (this week - 38w) pessary at 2pm and baby born at 3:30am

Good luck!

@Nat6999

A simple yes or no might have done......

Zippy1510 · 23/04/2021 04:10

I’m currently sat feeding my 4 week old who was born via a pessary induction. I also thought it wouldn’t work and was expecting
a long slow induction process. I went in at 39 weeks and was told my cervix was unfavourable and closed. Had the propess put in at 2 in the afternoon (the slow releasing pessary) felt nothing all day which reconfirmed my pessaries do nothing theory. Went to bed and woke up at 5 with very mild back ache. Stood up to go to the bathroom and my waters went, contractions started immediately and were every few minutes, baby was born at 7.30!

CocoaN · 23/04/2021 04:22

Worked for me at 39+6, inserted at 1pm, baby born around 24hrs later

Eminybob · 23/04/2021 04:27

Worked for me

Humpty11 · 23/04/2021 05:38

I had one pessary and it worked for me.

linerforlife · 23/04/2021 05:59

Worked for me. Baby was in my arms 4 hours later. Fast labour, easy delivery and only a tiny tear. I'd 100% have one next time if needed.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 23/04/2021 06:02

11 hours from pessary to baby for me.

RizzleRazzle · 23/04/2021 06:16

I had the pessary removed 5 hours ago after it being in for 24 hours and nothing had changed about my cervix at all but I've had the gel in for 4 hours now and having what I think are contractions.

I am 38 weeks though and first baby and was told in advance I'd problem need a few steps

Indoctro · 23/04/2021 06:20

It worked for me, they put it in about 11.30pm and my waters went about 4am and baby born at 1pm.

MummaT84 · 23/04/2021 06:57

Thanks again! A few no's but lots of positive stories. Hoping that I'm one of those success stories
Thanks ladies xxx
