should I have a bump

I'm currently 11 weeks pregnant, I wasn't expecting a bump for a few weeks yet, however one of my friends has just announced her pregnancy and she's a week ahead of me and has definitely got a sizable bump. It's worried me that I should have one and I'm not seeing it. my husband says I do but I genuinely don't see it, and feel he may be saying that to keep me calm.

Everyone is different. I didn’t start showing with DC1 until about 18 weeks. I’m currently pregnant with DC3 and it was noticeable from about 10 weeks! Lots of pregnancy websites like babycentre or what to expect have galleries of bellies at different stages so you can see how different it is for different bodies.

2021mumma · 22/04/2021 07:34

With first baby I didn’t show till 20 weeks. Everyone is different.

With my first I didn’t have a bump for quite a while; I was still in normal jeans until 18 weeks and probably didn’t show until 20 weeks. I think having a bump at 11 weeks is probably more unusual; even with my second I was in maternity jeans at 12 weeks but looked more bloated than actually having a bump for quite a while

Allicit · 22/04/2021 07:36

I’m nearly 21 weeks with no bump! We all have different bodies and carry differently and it’s perfectly normal :) 11 weeks would be very early to have a bump and would normally be bloating unless it’s a second baby (those bumps come earlier as the body has done it before often). All sorts of factors can affect it, but it doesn’t mean there is anything wrong at all :) pregnancy is so anxiety provoking, especially when you compare yourself to others (we all do it) good luck OP xx

SnargaluffPod · 22/04/2021 07:36

I didn’t get a bump until 21 weeks with my first.

Goodtohear · 22/04/2021 07:44

I kept my first pregnancy a secret till 20 weeks - but suddenly 'popped' I was actually enormous in the end.
With dt I started with a bump at 7 weeks by 10 weeks there was no hiding it.
Every pregnancy is different.

FluffMagnet · 22/04/2021 07:51

I'm currently 14 weeks with my second and don't think I have a bump. I didn't last time, and in fact never ended up looking hugely pregnant. I think it is entirely individual and nothing to worry about. The midwives will start measuring you around 16 weeks, so take their advice then.

Ftumch · 22/04/2021 07:56

It really depends on your body shape, weight, stomach muscles etc. I'm 11 weeks with my second (big age gap) and don't have a bump yet, with my first I was definitely starting to look like I'd eaten all the pies by 12 weeks.

20viona · 22/04/2021 07:57

I didn't get a bump till 26 weeks. When I got induced at 37w the midwives couldn't believe I was full term.

Chelyanne · 22/04/2021 07:58

I just look like I've eaten too many pies early on. Twin bump was very visible by 16/17wks, singletons closer to 20wk. Now 23+2wk with a singleton and look further along than another mum who's 2wk ahead of me. All depends on your body shape, how you carry and baby position later on.

Okbutnotgreat · 22/04/2021 08:03

First baby I didn’t show until around 26 weeks then grew huge in no time. Subsequent pregnancies I looked obviously pregnant by 12 weeks.

HappyAsASandboy · 22/04/2021 08:04

Everybody is different. I didn't tell work I was pregnant with twins until 20 weeks and was wearing a slimline suit dress all that time! I was a little thicker around the waist, but nothing you'd immediately think was a pregnancy.

With my second and third pregnancies I looked heavily pregnant from the minute I stopped holding my stomach in Wink

Amz6219 · 22/04/2021 09:33

I'm 14 weeks now and just look a bit bloated, with my son I popped as soon as I had 12 week scan!

I thought 2nd pregnancy I would be showing earlier but looks as though every pregnancy is different! I'm glad in a way because I'm still able to hide it a bit, think following MMC last year I'm a bit nervous of people knowing for some reason.. x

Chanel05 · 22/04/2021 09:36

People carry differently, 11 weeks is very early and baby is only very small still remember. I didn't look pregnant until at least 23 weeks and by the end, I was a whale.

BrumBoo · 22/04/2021 09:51

I hardly showed with any of mine - not particularly overweight, I think it's all to do with height and positioning. I'm currently 35 weeks and people are still surprised when I say I'm pregnant at all. Funniest part is, baby is measuring at 95+ centile at my appointments. With my second, I had such a non-bump that some people I knew in passing were shocked when I was out with a newborn - he was 8 pounds 7 at birth as well....

Most women aren't as unlucky as me though, and usually there's a definite bump by 20-24 weeks. With a first, it takes a bit longer for the uterus to pop out, babies are pretty tiny for a long time.

LittleTiger007 · 22/04/2021 10:22

As previous posters said, it’s a lot to do with your height. A friend of mine is 25 weeks pregnant and 5ft 1in ... she has a huge bump... much bigger than mine and I am 36 weeks! But I am 5ft 9in and as my torso is longer and the baby is back to back I still hardly show sometimes (it varies when the baby shifts). For the first 16 weeks or so it is mainly bloat anyway. Don’t panic. Every single bump is unique and bears no relation to the size of your baby.

Garman · 22/04/2021 11:14

Your friend is probably really shoving it out and highlighting it with clothes/hand placement if she has a noticeable bump at 12 weeks.

Ninkanink · 22/04/2021 11:18

I didn’t have a bump until I was six months pregnant. It’s very different from woman to woman.

PerspicaciousGreen · 22/04/2021 20:04

I feel like I got a bump with all of mine the second they were conceived, but I am very short and very quickly got heartburn because of the upwards pressure. Clearly my babies have nowhere to go but out! People were knowingly saying "Not long now!" from about six months and couldn't believe it wasn't twins or even more.

I have friends who barely showed when they were halfway through their pregnancy because they obviously had more room in their torso for baby to grow in there before it needed to shove outwards. Some people barely need maternity clothes even near the end.

At no point does the size or shape of your bump (or non bump) mean anything about the viability of your baby and the health of your pregnancy. You've got nothing to worry about at all.

xsjrx · 23/04/2021 15:34

I'm just about 19 weeks and still feel like I've eaten all the pies but getting a small bump esp to feel it...feel firmer. At 11 weeks I was definitely just bloat but I'm a FTM.
