39 weeks - Diarrhoea and sickness, is labour close?

Sarahstubbs · 21/04/2021 20:49

Sorry for the TMI
I’m 39+1 and have had 4 cases of diarrhoea today and been sick throughout the day. Not feeling very well for last 24 hours.
Have had tightenings across belly on and off throughout the day and pressure.
Would you say labour is close?
Is this normal or should I be phoning maternity assessment?

Sounds like it to me!! Good luck

mnahmnah · 21/04/2021 20:58

Yep. Exactly how I started with both of mine. Keep a close eye on the timings of the bump tightenings - similar intervals, they’re contractions!

Sarahstubbs · 21/04/2021 21:03

They don’t hurt in anyway and not regular.. is that normal?
Thank you for reply very helpful

It can be normal to start off with yes. So just keep an eye on them to see if they do become more regular and start to hurt. BUT, always better safe than sorry. I would give community midwives a ring for advice. Could it be a tummy bug or food poisoning?

Miarara · 21/04/2021 21:08

Call maternity assessment for reassurance. I'd imagine you'll be having a baby very soon 🙂 all i had was a bit of back ache on the Sunday, Tuesday morning I woke up at 5am to a ping of my waters breaking. Contractions started 5.20, upset stomach shortly after, also threw up 3 times, DD was born at 9.40, 38 weeks. I think the upset stomach is a really common sign!

Okay thank you will keep an eye, I've lost my Appetite only really eaten yogurt and cereal for last couple days so nothing that could be food poisoning.

I'd get an early night's sleep if you can.... Nice back massage to relax you/move things along...

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 21/04/2021 21:16

Nice relaxing bath! Baby is making their way! Exciting. Good luck

SquirtleSquad · 21/04/2021 21:17

Keep well hydrated if you're having lots of D&V whether it's labour pending or food poisoning you'll want to keep your fluids up!

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 21/04/2021 21:20

Ah good luck op. With my 2nd I started throwing up in the ambulance (transfer from home birth and DS got stuck sideways) and couldn't stop. So much so they had to give me an anti sickness jab and it hurt like a bee sting!!

trevthecat · 21/04/2021 21:21

Ooooo sounds promising!! I had diarrhea the day before all of mine. As pp said, try and get a good night's sleep, could be a very busy one tomorrow!!

Jingers5 · 21/04/2021 21:28

Good luck OP, get plenty of rest in the meantime 😊

Haveyoubrushedyourteeth · 21/04/2021 21:31

I'd be getting the final bits and pieces packed and have yourself a nice bath and off to bed, tomorrow could be a busy day.

I've had 5 babies and every labour started exactly you've described accompanied by a feeling of just not being able to settle. Very best of luck OP, hope you're cuddling your little bundle soon.

I've been on an anti sickness tablet 4x a day since 25 weeks and still being sick, this is a different type of sick than what I'm normally like if that makes sense

I feel like every time I walk I need to go for a wee there's so much pressure, is that normal?

None of my 5 engaged their heads until I was in established labour, so I just got a dragging feeling, but once their heads settled it was like pressure.

If that needing a wee turns into cystitis type symptoms thought, rather than just pressure, then give your midwife a ring in the morning and get her to check you don't have an infection.

One last thing, and it probably sounds daft, but when I had my first two I remember thinking that gas and air was absolutely useless. But if you use it properly (which nobody had showed me) it is actually really good. The trick is, that you need to breathe in and out through the mouthpiece, don't just breathe in then let it go, keep it there until the contraction has lulled, even when you feel like it's taking your breath away bite it if you need to, but keep it there and I promise it makes a big difference. It took me until baby number 3 to work that out, and I really wish someone had told me with my first!

Thank you, that great help!! I'm going to a birth centre thats attaches to the main hospital which is reassuring just incase but hoping the birth centre is a lot more relaxed and calming environment (fingers crossed)

Nope Sickness has really vamped up today, feeling very tired and restless, have been having some strange belly sensation that are on and off painful.. not sure what they are but not getting hopes up as really thought something was happening other day and it's just continued

Sounds like your baby is on the way but if you keep being sick call your midwife just for a check
