Polyhydramnios (excess fluid) at 36 weeks.. Anyone else?

Anyone else have polyhydramnios? Had 36 week scan & consultant appointment yesterday and fluid is higher than it should be and in the mild polyhydramnios range... they suggested induction at 39 weeks which I declined and have another scan booked in for when I’m 39+2. Just wondered if anyone else in a similar situation?

It seems the cut off for normal is 23 and mine is 23.6 so only just in the range, I’m telling myself if they was concerned then they wouldn’t be leaving me for 3 more weeks but of course went on Google and scared myself 🙄

Thanks x

Don't worry about it.

I've had it with 2 singletons and one of our twins. The 1st singleton had very high levels and they refused to break my waters when I was 5cm (already been in labour 5 days at that point) as they were worried about cord prolapse. After a lot of nagging and no progress despite constant contractions they did break my waters and he was born 2hr 19mins later at 40+5. It was like a waterfall and he had significant meconium in them too but it didn't cause any issues with the birth. The other singletons fluid wasn't quite as high and the twins was not far over the norm. They put it down to them being larger babies.

The thing is this is one of these things that seems to get worse as time goes on so you might have a bit too much fluid now but possibly quite a bit more at 39 weeks and there is the danger of cord prolapse. You'll know more at your scan I guess. I had polyhydramios and baby never really got engaged for labour, I had a section but that wasn't the only reason why.

Mabelann · 21/04/2021 16:35

The reason they will want to induce at 39 weeks is probably because they don’t want you to go into labour and for your waters to break naturally in case you get a cord prolapse. If that’s going to happen it’s much better that it happens in hospital.

Thanks all, I’m totally open to induction at 39 weeks if it’s safest for baby, just felt a little premature to book it in now without a rescan! Thanks for all the advice x

I had that at 37 weeks. By 39 weeks it was back into be the normal range and i went on to have an induction at 40+10 (because of being late). DS was entirely healthy but big!

Littlebee1990 · 21/04/2021 17:12

@LBTM That’s reassuring & seems quite common from what I’ve seen.. this little boy doesn’t seem so little either and has a head on the 98th centile 😂

Hi I have polydramnios but I’m only currently 34+3 I have another scan at 37 weeks and interested to know what will be the plan going forward. Will you keep us updated?

megaann · 22/04/2021 02:16

I have it to. Same measurements as you!! I'm being induced at 38 exactly next week. With a sweep tomorrow at 37 exactly.

I'm shitting it tbh.

Littlebee1990 · 22/04/2021 05:05

@workingmummyof2soontobe3 of course! X

@megaann How come they’re inducing you at 38 weeks? X

I'm 36 weeks. Diagnosed with poly at 28 weeks. Mine is currently 28cm, so considered mild.

I'm booked in for a section at 39 weeks.

I googled too, which was a mistake. I've been assured that nothing looks amiss on the scans, but its still hard not to worry.

Joining a fb group helped ease my mind though.

Littlebee1990 · 23/04/2021 14:17

@Nia18 Can I ask why you’re booked in for a section? Is that because of the polydramnios? They’ve not even mentioned a section to me which is why I ask, thanks! X

@Littlebee1990 I'm having a section for other reasons, mostly because of a narrow pelvis. All 3 of mine will have been C section babies.

From what I've gathered on the Poly group I follow, most women don't have C sections because of the poly alone.

Littlebee1990 · 24/04/2021 07:47

@Nia18 Thanks for replying! Good luck with your section and baby number 3 😘

I had this and scared myself silly with googling. I was already anxious anyway after infertility then MCs. Anyway. No healthcare professionals were remotely bothered and I callled A LOT of them! I did go in for induction as my daughter was measuring small (which she was) but I don’t know if that was linked to the water issue. Anyways aside from being born small she’s completely healthy and normal so don’t worry yourself. I had a c-section and apparently my waters going was quite epic!

Chelyanne · 24/04/2021 09:17

They didn't suggest cesarean to me due to the poly and they would have let me go 2 weeks overdue despite him measuring 4 wk ahead on growth scans too. He came out at 10lb 12oz but I had an unassisted delivery on G&A (although they took that off me to push).

piratepee · 24/04/2021 09:30

I had a CS because of this because so much fluid caused dc to be transverse

Em39ma · 24/04/2021 09:30

I had very high water levels in the 25. I was induced at 37 weeks, but after a week and still know movement I had ac section.
Mine is hereditary, my mother and grandmother had the same.
