why are pregnant women not prioritised for vaccination?

Pregnant women are more likely to be admitted to icu and/or need ventilation than non-pregnant women. Covid-19 is also associated with preterm delivery. Pregnant women are advised to work from home from 28 weeks or are suspended on full pay if they can’t. This is due to them being classified as clinically vulnerable.

What is the logic therefore behind the recent announcement that pregnant women can have the vaccination but only with their age group? They/ we are not prioritised in any way due to being so called ‘clinically vulnerable. Is this another example of pregnant women being forgotten about or is there some actual reason?

I think it's because it's not a significant increase in being severely ill/prem birth is only associated with severe covid 19 in the mum

Most pregnant women even in the third trimester are asymptomatic/have mild illness y

That doesn’t explain why we have to work from home from 28 weeks though. It’s completely inconsistent.

Because of the higher risk of exposure in some jobs

Most pregnant women who catch covid will be fine

physicskate · 20/04/2021 22:13

@Aintnotimeforthat - I'm not sure you understand how the immune system works? No one has any immunity from covid until exposed to either the virus or vaccine. Hence it causing a global pandemic... no one had any sort of immunity from this novel virus.

Also, it's often an immune system over-reaction that causes inflammation, which can be the cause of the more severe cases of covid. This is because the immune system doesn't recognise covid. By vaccinating, your immune system has recognition of a part of the covid vaccine (but not the whole thing, or the live virus, just a part of the virus that doesn't trigger illness), and therefore knows how to fight it off...

Oh dear here come the anti vaxxers

physicskate · 21/04/2021 04:16

Honestly I'm not trying to patronise anyone. I just can't stand people spreading falsehoods, ignorance or opinion as fact... apologies for simply being a pedant (who loves science). Opinions aren't facts.

My trust has, I was offered the jab weeks ago

Actually came on to say that I don’t understand this either OP. Wish we would be!

QuarantineQueen · 21/04/2021 07:09

It doesn't make sense at all. Shielded people are back at work, who are more at risk than pregnant women (who come under clinically vulnerable rather than clinically extremely vulnerable in terms of risk level) - presumably that is because shielded people have had the vaccine and pregnant women haven't?
So why don't they now prioritise pregnant women and get them back to work? It makes no sense.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 21/04/2021 07:10

Talk to your GP, who can add you as priority 6 if your risk factors add up

For certain cardiac conditions, it's priority 4

Arrierttyclock · 21/04/2021 07:13

You can if you're high risk or your jobs high risk. I'm a dental nurse and now pregnant, luckily I got my second one whilst I was in my TWW but I would of got it regardless because of my job there's a high chance of me contracting COVID but there's not enough evidence in the vaccine and in pregnancy for them to say yes it's safe every pregnant person can have it.

If I was working from home however I'd wait until after I'd given birth

HeartsAndClubs · 21/04/2021 07:16

@ Aintnotimeforthat has a copy and paste somewhere which it pastes into any thread involving vaccination. And several deletions behind its name.

And no understanding of how the immune system works.

Don’t feed it...

HeartsAndClubs · 21/04/2021 07:17

And anyone who uses the word sheeple is a bit thick anyway.

Brabraboo · 21/04/2021 10:00

Desperate to understand the logic in this too. Becoming so frustrated reading threads where people seem to be taking great pride in ‘ignoring’ invites and letting the nhs continually waste time chasing them up to offer them a potentially life saving vaccine they don’t want over and over again because they are entitled to it, and don’t have the respect or consideration to just officially refuse because it’s a source of satisfaction to them that they are pissing off the evil system by wasting time in it. (Yes I’m hormonal and pissed off by the threads on the coronavirus board that come under this ilk) All while there are pregnant women, who are therefore sitting with with already overworked immune systems and reduced lung capacity DESPERATE not to risk a shitty dose of covid and an icu stay but... being left to wait. Grand. Absolutely grand.

Vulnerable enough we are advised to shield from 28 weeks but NOT vulnerable enough to be prioritised? RIIIIIGHT.

Cafeaulait27 · 22/04/2021 18:20

I literally just read that pregnant women are 50% more likely to suffer complications from covid. This in my eyes makes us high risk.

We need to be prioritised now!

tikha · 22/04/2021 19:20

The advice might change given this new research. The issue is we don't have any pfizer or moderna vaccines available in UK?

Skymum82 · 22/04/2021 19:39

@Brabraboo omg I seem to be one of those people on paper! 🤦🏼‍♀️. I was asked in jan and feb for the vaccine can't because I'm pregnant 😂. So on paper I'm a anti Vaxer. Lol.
I would of had it done totally if not pregnant. However I have to say I'm more anxious now, I'm 18 weeks and worry about the baby. It's not just me to think about. Hate being in This position. I think I will.
