Does anyone have any experience with ectopic pregnancy?

I’m currently 7 weeks pregnant and last night I woke up with severe pain in my lower pelvis..it wasn’t on a particular side just across the whole area very low down. More sharp stabbing than a dull crampy pain..I’ve had a miscarriage before and it felt nothing like that and I’ve had no bleeding.

It was so painful I asked husband or call an ambulance as I also felt like I was going to faint, very sick and clammy. I couldn’t even get up or walk! The ambulances were really busy and after 30 mins the pain stopped suddenly and I cancelled the ambulance as i didn’t want to take one up unnecessarily.

I’m waiting for my doctors to open this morning to get referred to the early pregnancy unit but just going a little crazy in the meantime! For anyone who had an ectopic is it usually constant pain or normal to stop start like this? I googled and it said pain usually on one side which I haven’t had..also no bleeding. It was severe so way worse than trapped wind or something and I’ve given birth with no painkillers..but feel a bit silly now as it’s gone!

I don't have any experience with ectopic pregnancy but in my area I think you can refer yourself to EPU and not wait for a doctor's referral.

Oh no that sounds horrible!

With my ectopic it was distinctly on one side and felt like someone had their thumb where my tube is, pushing every single ounce of their weight down on it. Incredibly painful but definitely localised. Had bleeding too.

Definitely get the ball rolling with EPU as they should offer you an early scan at this stage. Good luck! ☺️

Often you can experience pain on the shoulder too ... hopefully it’s not but you need to get referred to EPAU to rule it out. Speak to your GP or 111 and hopefully you should get seen this morning x

I had an ectopic in September. I think I'm in the minority of people as up until it burst- I had no symptoms.

Found out I was pregnant as I felt off- I was on mini pill. Partner said to take a test to rule it out. This was a Friday. Positive.

That following week I had quite intense pregnancy symptoms- sore boobs and sickness.

The midwife sorted me out with a dating scan on the following Friday- and that morning when I had a wee I had a purple blood colour upon wiping.

Went to scan later in afternoon thinking i was miscarrying. They told me they couldn't find anything but could possibly see something in my right tube.

They did bloods and told me to come back Sunday for a repeat.

Well next day is when the pain started! Saturday we went into town to take our minds off of it all. I sat down at a cafe for a coffee and I had this horrible pain in my shoulder- that's when I knew. I could barely walk back to the car as was so dizzy. Still not a bad pain lower down!

Got to hospital and I had another scan and they confirmed it was an ectopic. Had surgery a few hours later (had to wait has had eaten) and my right tube was removed!

So I didn't necessarily get the lower pain that bad really! Was straight to shoulder x

Mine was on one side- I had been mildly bleeding for wks too and I was so cold (heating on full blast and still a shivering wreck). They will scan you to check- May I ask why you think you may be having an eptopic, any scarred tubes or reason to worry aside from pain?

Thanks everyone and I’m so sorry to hear you’ve had to go through an ectopic pregnancy. The reason I thought it could be ectopic is simply because I’d googled early pregnancy sharp stomach pain and it was the main thing that came up but obviously not relying on Dr Google! I’ve got an appointment at the EPU this afternoon so fingers crossed..I had a miscarriage last pregnancy so I’m definitely extra paranoid this time.

Gd luck op!

Good luck for today OP. I haven’t had an ectopic but in early pregnancy I had excruciating central abdo pain that used to wake me up in the night and last for maybe an hour or so at a time. Like literally I would be curled up in a ball on the floor as I had tried to make it to the toilet but couldn’t move coz of the pain. Then it would just sort of fade out and the pain was gone. Was probably when I was around 6ish weeks. It turned out to be trapped wind and constipation for me, so I know you said you didn’t think it was trapped wind but honestly I never felt pain like it. Was sure something was seriously wrong but all was ok for me. Also just wanted to say please don’t feel silly for getting it checked out or feel like you are wasting anyone’s time. Severe pain should not be ignored and there is no one size fits all for pregnancy symptoms. I hope it’s all good news for you today!! X

@ExcitingTimes2021 thanks for telling me about your experience, I really really hope it’s just trapped wind!! That’s what it was like I was curled in a ball doubled over! I think I’m ultra cautious as last time when I had a 10wk miscarriage my symptoms were mild when I went to EPU and I thought it was being daft then but obviously bad news. Really hope this is nothing or not related to the baby 🤞

I wouldn't bother going to the GP. Call EPU and go for a scan today.

heybabes · 19/04/2021 11:00

I had a really sharp pain in my right side at around 5+3 and phoned the doctor as it was super painful. I was terrified of an ectopic.

I phoned the GP and got seen at the EPU a couple of days later. Thankfully it was a corpus luteum cyst causing the pain on my right side, which is where I must have ovulated from. Everything else was in the right place! So obviously a relief but not to say that it wasn't painful.

Apparently these cysts can cause lots of pain and pressure for people in the first trimester but then by the second, it should resolve on its own. I hope it's something like this for you and not an ectopic. Good luck later!

EL8888 · 19/04/2021 11:07

@heybabes l was going to suggest a cyst or ruptured cyst. I had similar pains about 18 months ago, the pain was super intense and l blacked out briefly. I could barely speak or move, was nearly sick. Then it just went

Throwntothewolves · 19/04/2021 11:11

I had one which ruptured but like mamatocaptainchaos I didn't have any pain at all until it burst, then the pain was the worst I've ever experienced. The only symptom I had was some light brown bleeding, but then I had the same with a miscarriage and implantation with my successfully pregnancy.

Get checked out by the EPU, it's the only way to find out what is going on. I really hope you are ok.

Could also but cyst but yes definitely see someone.
I had an ectopic at 5weeks last year and woke up in agony, sharp pain generalised in lower abdomen although did notice slight more lower right aswell. I was clammy, sick, diarrhoea, crawling the floor on all fours. Luckily I’m a midwife and called our labour ward doctors who cover gynae over night and asked what to do. They said come in, so got an Uber and went to A&E and was in theatre later that day with a ruptured ectopic. The pain wasn’t continuous, it did improve before it got worse again, but maybe that was pain killers

Lao90 · 19/04/2021 16:30

It was all ok in the end thank god! Got to see the heartbeat and everything looked as it should :) they did say I had a large cyst on my right ovary which could possibly be causing the pain but they weren’t worried about it
