Baby's goes blue when swimming

Hello everyone

So my son is 8 months and this afternoon my husband and I decided to take our son swimming for the first time. We went in the baby pool that's meant to be heated to 31 degrees, but after 10 minutes we noticed his hands/arms turning a bluey purple colour, then after another 10 minutes his lips started going blue, so we took him straight out, and got him dried/changed and left.

I've got my first baby swim class with him tomorrow and now I'm worried this will happen again - and I don't know if this is normal or something to worry about?

Any advice appreciated, I'm a first time mum!
Xxx

My son had this, took him the gp and they checked him out, it was 5 years ago now so I can't remember exactly what they said but basically that he was fine and would grow out of the purple mottling, which he did.

Mine both did this until they were about 10. It's where th heat is transferred to internal organs to keep them warm. You did right to get baby out and warmed up. We found one pool about 20 miles from us was much warmer so could only take them there. They had to keep swimming when toddlers to keep warm or they would go blue and we'd have to leave. I used to put wetsuits on them, rash vests etc helped keep them a bit warmer.

They're 18 and 15 now and spend half the summer swimming in the sea! Smile

Kids pool temperature is still chilly for babies and toddlers. A neoprene baby wrap or wetsuit (we bought ours at Splash About) keeps them warmer for longer but we still got blue lips after half an hour.

I remember telling the health visitor that I'd taken my baby to the pool when he was a couple of months old and she laughed and said 'how long was it before he turned blue' i laughed too because it was about 5 minutes Blush totally normal!

My ds always did this too! 26 now and no issues.

Thanks everyone - so it sounds like it's fairly common then..

Do you think it's still okay for me to take him to the class tomorrow.. Or should I cancel. Don't want him going blue and be too cold, and I'm not sure how long these baby classes last?!?
