Hi all, first thread. I am only 5wks pg and have just had to have a local anaesthetic injection into my breast for a biopsy. Now I am home my mind is racing 100mph that this may harm the baby or cause miscarriage because of how early on I am. Any experience of this would be much MUCH appreciated! I miscarried before this pregnancy so am very on edge.xx

I should imagine it’s absolutely fine, I had a general anaesthetic at about 5 weeks pregnant, did you notify the person doing the biopsy that you were pregnant?

GappyValley · 17/04/2021 14:51

It’s absolutely fine

I had several locals while pregnant, and an epidural is a type of local anaesthetic that is used during labour - so thousands of pregnant women are having locals every day while giving birth

Thanks for the quick reply! I did let the doctor know but she didn’t really seem that concerned about the pregnancy and was more concerned about getting the breast procedure done, I guess her area. All ok after GA?x

Thanks so much Gappy Valley, my only worry is reading things online about it maybe causing problems in early pregnancy. Were yours early on at all?xx this forum is amazing!!

I had local anaesthetic for a mole removal in early pregnancy. All fine.

Greybeardy · 17/04/2021 15:39

Local anaesthetic is absolutely fine, and safer in pregnancy than having a GA. Also, any risk has to be weighed against that of not getting the test done/making a diagnosis. Hope it all turns out well.

The dose is so low you'll be fine.

Thanks so much everyone xx

The first piece of advice my midwife gave me was not to go down 'a Google hole' lol as there is so much incorrect information on there. We actually laughed that there was an article saying how pineapple should be avoided as can be linked to problems and miscarriage.
I was taken in for reduced movements at 32 weeks and you could then hear baby hiccuping for a good while on the monitor yet there's websites that tell you after 32 weeks you need to call your midwife. She wasn't in the slightest bit concerned.

They would of course weigh up the pros and cons of any treatment and whether the risk needs to be taken and would need to tell you if there was any extreme risks you needed to be aware of xx

Oh, no. I hope things have settled down now, OP, and everything is ok.

If the worst does happen, do let your GP know. I very much doubt that it would be due to your local anaesthetic, but it's only by people reporting unexpected events after medical treatment that rare side effects are discovered.
