Hello,

I've had a UTI for the last week & just started my 4th day of antibiotics (no improvement yet)
I just saw the results and it says 'streptococcus agalactiae (Group B)'
Is this related to the strep b infection babies can get that makes them ill? Can it be dangerous for the baby right now?
I already spoke to my midwife about the uti a few days ago who wasn't interested and not very helpful :(

The most dangerous time for group b strep is labour. It can be transient and be there at one point and not another. Usually with known infection they give antibiotics in labour. This is what we’re getting.

Thanks for your reply, is this intravenous antibiotics?

Yes, iv antibiotics when you’re in labour is the most important thing for baby. They’re only at risk after your waters break.

I got a strep B positive result around the same time. Dr called and said the best recommendation is to have IV antibiotics given during labour and as long as they are given 4 hours before birth, the risks are very minimal.

I was really worried at the time but did a lot of reading up on the Group B strep website and they have also a helpline you can call.

Group B strep is really common in woman so there are a lot of babies who come into contact with it during labour without knowing if the mum has it. Of every baby who comes into contact, around 1in1750 will develop an early onset infection, so about 43 babies per month in the whole of the UK.

With the IV antibiotics, the risk of infection developing in your baby is reduced from 1in400 to 1in4000.

The RCOG and GBSS website have some really good info xx
