Anyone had a low lying placenta before?

So I've just had my 20 week scan and i have a low lying placenta. I'm booked in again in 5 weeks for another scan i guess to see if it's moved. The consultant didnt sound too concerned and just said to call a number if i get any bleeding. I thought nothing of it.

Of course just looked on Google and now im freaking out as it sounds worse than the consultant made out. Heavy bleeding, no sex after 28 weeks, going into labour early etc etc.

Has anyone had experience of this?
I had a previous csection so could be why this is happening.

Thanks

@Twirlywoos1 I'm currently 25 weeks pregnant and have a low lying placenta.

Sadly I've had no additional information on it and don't have a follow up scan until 32 weeks. So I'm mostly just jumping on your thread hoping to learn something as well.

I was left thinking it was no big deal at all, and was told that 9 times out of 10 the placenta will move. However, like you, I had a google at home and was scared by how much I hadn't been told and it does seem to be a case of not knowing anything until the follow up scan. Which is really frustrating.

Hopefully someone who has had experience of this previously will be along soon.

I had one! I had no bleeding, I only knew because of the scan. I had a follow up at 32w and it was still a partial o/s. Went into hospital at 37w for bed rest (although I was allowed to go to the cafe etc) and had a planned section at 38w. I wasn’t restricted on exercise or anything till I went in. Good luck!

Don't worry about it, most do move out of the way in time.

The lower of our twins placenta was covering my cervix at 20wk. I had scans every 4 weeks which is standard for fraternal twins and it had moved out of the way by my 32wk scan. She turned breech after that so I ended up with an elcs at 38wk anyway.

I had one, no bleeding and it had moved by my 32-week scan. The consultant did tell me not to have sex though until then.

Chelyanne · 16/04/2021 16:12

Oh and I never had any issues with bleeding from the placenta position in that pregnancy.

VelvetKitty · 16/04/2021 16:15

I had a low lying placenta and it moved by 32 week scan. I wasn't told not to have sex or anything like that though and had no issues with bleeding. My midwife explained that in most cases as the baby grows it will correct itself.

I had a low lying placenta at 29 they rescanned at 26+4 and it had moved up 6cm clear of OS,x

AnxiousAnnie86 · 16/04/2021 18:39

Sorry, low lying placenta at 20 rescanned at 26 +4

Twirlywoos1 · 16/04/2021 18:55

Thanks ladies thats made me feel abit better. My notes state 'nearly covering os' which makes me think oh god this is really far over now.
Great to hear its still moved for some of you at that stage. I have another scan in 5 weeks, fingers crossed its moved over 🤞🏼 my life is too busy for bed rest, i can't be dealing with that haha. X

Yes I’ve told this story before and it still makes me cringe. Hadn’t moved enough so had another scan at 37 weeks, baby was so engaged that they couldn’t get a good reading. Hence me having to get into all funny positions including being on all 4s while having a probe inserted to get a better view 🤣😂🤣 ....it had moved enough for a normal delivery 🙈

Hi, I had a low lying placenta. I had a scan at 32 and 36 weeks as it was still covering cervix. The 36 week scan was on christmas eve they wanted to admit me there and then due to risk of bleeding or early labour I said no as wanted to spend Christmas with my other children so was admitted 27th Dec instead but was told to go straight in if I bled or labour started. I was in hospital 10 days before my c section at 38+3 (first one other children born vaginally) . They wanted to do section at 38 weeks but it was a weekend so had to wait a few days. I only lost 300ml of blood too so wasn't that bad. If you need anymore advice or info I'm happy to help. Good luck.

I had a very low lying placenta with one of my twins. I did start to get very heavy and frightening bleeds with massive clots from 28 weeks. I was admitted to hospital via ambulance 3 times. I ended up having a full placental abruption and haemorrhaged at 34 weeks and had twins via emergency each c section. But obviously having twins in my case very much complicated things and the placenta probably had no where to move to

Ohpulltheotherone · 16/04/2021 21:12

Yes! Mine was very close - almost covering at 20 weeks. Moved up no problem.

As I remember it from research, the majority do move. No point worrying about something which might not (and the chances are) won’t happen.

Be clued up on the potential outcomes but don’t invest too much worry, it’s really common!

WaitingForNormality · 17/04/2021 07:35

Me with my first! No one told me no sex etc and I carried on as normal until a scan at 34 weeks to check if it had moved up - which it had. My understanding is the majority move out the way by 37weeks so it's not a problem.

Deftly · 17/04/2021 10:08

I've had a low lying placenta at 20 weeks in both my pregnancies and both times it had moved completely out of the way by 32 weeks. No advice about bed rest, no sex etc.

Greenbks · 17/04/2021 22:37

I had a low lying placenta which caused a lot of painless bleeding with clots. I went into early labour around 18 weeks and gave birth to my son.

Most times it’s ok but I would take it easy. Listen to your body and get yourself to hospital if you bleed.
