Worried about the size of my baby

I had a scan today at 38+5 and the measurements worked out that my baby girl is around 8 pound 4 !! Which is scary enough as my 1st was born at 36 weeks weighing 5 pound 12 so a large baby really is a scary thought!
When I look at the individual measurements on my scan her head and femur are around the 40th centile and the abdomen is on the 95th centile is this normal ?
I feel like if her abdomen was to measure a little smaller it would bring her weight right down, is there a reason for a large abdomen ? I have had 4 blood tests now checking for diabetes and all are normal so that's ruled out.
There is no sign of her coming any time soon so just getting so worried that if I go to 42 weeks she will be massive 😩

Thanks

My sons were born 8.11 & 9.5 lbs and I'm 5'3" so I really wouldn't worry about it, you'll be in good hands and fine.

If it's not GD I shouldn't worry too much just yet. Scans are notoriously unreliable for size, and if the hospital were concerned she will be huge they would be pushing you for an early induction. Have a chat to your midwife she will probably put your mind at rest!

A) those scans are pretty inaccurate
B) people seem to have biggish babies all the time these days. When I had DD she was 8lb7 which I thought was pretty big - got to a baby group a few weeks later and loads of people had had babies 9 pounds something and even a couple of 10 pounders.
The last 3 babies that I have known (born this year) all three were over 9 pound and none of the mums are big.
It really isnt that unusual! If she is big dont worry, they will get her out!

I had to have an additional growth scan with my second because she was measuring small, she was 9lb 6oz born. My first was 7lb 1oz and was a much harder birth. The measurements are notoriously unreliable, try not to worry.

Scans are incredibly inaccurate.
My second was predicted to be almost 10lb (9lb14oz exactly) at 36 weeks and I was petrified all those last weeks as I was on a skinny side.
He was born bang on due date at 8lb 6oz.Slightly bigger than his average sibling but labour was amazing.
Good luck.

My last baby was almost 10lbs when delivered at 39 weeks. I am tiny. No point fretting, it has to come out! As it was he never moved down far enough (probably due to his massive head) and I ended up with an emergency c-section which with hindsight, I'm glad of!

Thank you for all your posts! I just think because my 1st was so small and such a lovely birth (didn't tear) that I'm so nervous about giving birth to a bigger baby !
When I look at the measurements from both my babies my daughters head was 33.5cm when she was born weighing 5 pound 12 and my baby now at 38+5 is 32.9cm so her head is still tiny she just has a huge belly 🙂 so hopefully getting her head down shouldn't be a problem 🤦🏼‍♀️
Thanks for the reply's though put my mind at rest, hopefully just stressing over nothing !! X

Was your 1st child 5lb 12 at more or less full term? If so I would be wildly surprised if your next child is a whopper! She will probably come out very ordinary sized!

StayingHere · 16/04/2021 13:08

Sorry I've just seen she was 36 weeks. As above though, dont worry! If she is big there isnt much you can do, they will get her out for you!

Sceptre86 · 16/04/2021 13:14

I think you are stressing yourself unnecessarily. Your baby at 5lb 12oz was a small baby, my dd was 5lb 10oz at a similar gestation. My son was born at 40 weeks and 8lb 10oz . Not huge but still a big boy. Your baby sounds like it is growing well which is great news. Growth scans can vary hugely and are not nearly as accurate in lots of cases. If you are worried about tearing have you considered perineal massage? Might be worth a read. Otherwise try to enjoy the last few weeks of your pregnancy and I hope your lo arrives safely x

I’ve had three babies with a very large abdominal measurement (off the centile charts) and when they’ve been born, they’ve been very long but not heavy (7lbs was the heaviest).
