Is houmous safe to eat when pregnant?

Hi everyone...
I'm back to work next week (I work in a school) and I'm trying to think of lunch ideas! I used to love houmous, carrot sticks and cucumber and sometimes with pitta. Is houmous safe to eat when pregnant? I'm 16weeks and I keep thinking I really want it! I've tried to search online but there's different views about it.

Why wouldn’t it be?

ingredients; sesame seeds turned into paste as tahini, olive oil, chickpeas, salt, cumin, garlic, lemon juice.

can't think why any of that would be an issue in pregnancy.

Use the NHS site for a list of foods to avoid. Just ignore everything else as you’ll end up tying yourself in knots

toffeebutterpopcorn · 15/04/2021 17:54

I can’t think of any reason why not.

Thank you for your replies!
As I searched in google a few websites popped up suggesting it isn't safe so just thought to check. I will stick with the NHS only in future and ignore the others.

Why would you think it wasn't safe to eat? It hasn't even occurred to me that it wouldn't be. Luckily for me as it's one of the few foods I can eat thanks to still suffering hyperemesis at 24 weeks pregnant.

Step away from Google and enjoy your veg sticks and houmous for lunch, it sounds lush.

Thank you all for the reassurance! I shall be ordering some on my shopping order tomorrow! Smile

Yes it is.
If you are worried about any ingredients you could try making your own.

Why wouldn't it be?

I know everyone is jumping down your throat about it being obviously safe but google can throw up all sorts of worrying results for food! Americans for example are told to avoid cold meat and sushi whereas we are not. I imagine uncooked chickpeas have been once associated with listeria.

Now you know though that the only source you should look at is the NHS website. We have different hygiene standards in the UK and it takes this in to consideration.

otterbaby · 15/04/2021 18:29

I'm guessing you're thinking about the risk of listeria? It's absolutely fine, don't worry 🙂 and chickpeas are a good source of protein!

@penguin7 I had the same question a few weeks ago. I think the shop bought stuff if absolutely fine, I might not eat it off of a deli if it had been hanging around for a while to the open air. I've eaten my body weight in it recently so it better be Grin

I think it tends to be NZ and maybe AUS sites which say not to. A few years back NX had an issue with listeria in Hummus due to tainted Tahini. The products were recalled, no other issues since and very few instances of people actually getting sick.

I would say that in UK it would be perfectly fine to eat if not the NHS would be advising about it.
