AArrrggghhhh,

My boss has just asked me to go to the pub for a drink in 1 hour. There are other members of staff going. Normally when we go to the pub I drink and smoke and they will think it's odd if I don't today - but I found out I'm preg last week

What can I do to avoid it!!!!!! I've been with them all day so I can't say I'm ill!!!!!
HELP

Prime someone to call you mobile sweetheart. And then say you've got to go home as something's come up....not a big crisis - need to let a workman in or something

sweetheart · 01/11/2004 15:51

yes but we're going for a drink during work hours!!!! I can't leave - it's a bit of a perk!!!

Hello, Sweetheart. First - Congratulations!
In terms of smoking, why not say you're trying to quit? (you'll prob want to now, anyway??)

In early pregnancy I used to get the first round and or a fizzy water (or tonic water) w lemon or lime for myself. Everyone will assume that you're drinking a G&T or other mixed drink. When drinks are looking low, slip to the loo and get a refill of your non-alcoholic. When the next round comes, you can say you've got one. I did this for the first few months. No one seemed to notice.

G'luck.

can't drink as you have to drive?
say you're going out tonight so don't want to start too early?
or just say that you are having a break from drinking and smoking for a month to see if you can do it and to save money?

welshmum · 01/11/2004 15:54

Oops didn't realise if was during work. I'm off home myself to let the builders in

sweetheart · 01/11/2004 15:54

Thanks for the suggestion - trouble is my boss always buys ALL the drinks when we go to the pub. No-one else ever buys a round.

I can probably use my diet as an excuse not to drink but they'll notice the not smoking for definate - we had a big chat last week about why I only smoke in pubs and not during the day!!!!

say that the chat last week made you think about why you smoked, and that you are trying to give up?

sweetheart · 01/11/2004 15:56

I'll try that - thanks zubb!!!!

It's just a bit early to be telling the office I'm expecting!!!!!!

Yeah just say you are going to try and give up because you would like to be more healthy blah blah blah and incidentally well done for giving up now that you've found out you are pregnant! CONGRATULATIONS!

sweetheart · 01/11/2004 16:06

thanks you - it's not to hard for me to give up smoking as I'm only a social smoker. I still want one every time I'm in a pub though!!!!

Pregnancy is good for quitting smoking (as is quitting smoking for pregnancy, of course!) :-P But what I mean is, by the time I was 6 weeks in (4 wks from conception), the smell of cigarettes, wine or coffee made me feel v queasy.

motherinferior · 01/11/2004 16:11

Claim a hangover. Or a 'rather over-indulgent weekend, blush, oh god really must do better, it's Monday and I really AM going to be good', boring blah blah that they can't face hearing the end of...

MummyToSteven · 01/11/2004 16:11

tell them that you are detoxing?????

honeycombe · 01/11/2004 16:19

I used to be a social smoker aswell before I got pregnant and it actually wasn't too hard to stop - just knowing you are doing the best thing for your (secret) baby will make you feel better than any ciggy could!
