6 weeks pregnant - is this normal?

I've recently found out I'm pregnant (apx 6 weeks - my first) and called the midwife around 2 weeks ago to register/book in. I was simply told to await a call to be booked for an scan. No advice, no discussion of symptoms etc. Aside from being nauseous 24/7 (which I think is more to do with worry if I'm honest!) I dont FEEL pregnant. Does anyone FEEL pregnant at 6 weeks? I feel worried that it may have disappeared since I did a test (I did 4!) What if i go for my scan and theres nothing there? I wonder if that is normal procedure or should I be seen by someone now?? I have had pinkish discharge for the last couple of days and am worried something could be wrong, however I cannot get through to the midwife team at all!! Any advice from anyone who has experienced similar would be much appreciated. I feel like you just get left to worry and wonder until you are 12 weeks. I can't deal with 6 more weeks of not knowing if baby is ok!!!!

Hiya ! I’m currently 7weeks (8 weeks on sat) I’ve known since 4 weeks and I totally get you. I did like 10 tests lol I don’t have a booking in appt until beginning of may n scan mid May when I will be just over 12 weeks. I have been so so sick, and feel like shit. That’s the only way I know ! I booked a private scan for 10 weeks to try and keep myself going as I feel dreadful but I do have thoughts like what if they scan me n there isn’t anything there. I guess a lot of women must think that xx

@K821 I’m afraid it’s normal to get minimal midwife care in the early days. I had a booking appointment around 11 weeks and then the scan, that was it. However, if you’re worried about bleeding (and that can be totally normal by the way) then you could contact your local EPU who will advise if you should have an early scan - though at 6 weeks they probably won’t be able to see much (too early for a heartbeat I think). I’m afraid the next 6 weeks are going to be rubbish, I can’t soften the blow I’m afraid as I found the waiting for that first scan absolutely agonising. But hang on in there, the time passes eventually and final reassurance to say I had zero symptoms in the first trimester and ended up taking tests randomly throughout the 12 weeks to ‘check’, so don’t worry about ‘feeling pregnant’, lots of women have no symptoms at all.

Good luck and congratulations!!

Normal I’m afraid, one thing that surprised me was how hands off the whole process was.

I found out before I was 4 weeks pregnant, called the Dr who told me to contact midwife team. Booked in at 8.5 weeks, then a week later had my “12 week scan” date- I was actually 14 weeks for that scan. All midwife appointments have been over the phone and had an in person 20 week scan.

I did feel pregnant though, as I threw up ALOT, but having symptoms doesn’t necessarily guarantee all is okay. I ended up booking at an 8 week private scan.

The first 12 weeks dragged and I really didn’t expect to have my handheld, but as a ftm I was surprised how there was no support. My booking in appointment was a tick box exercise that took 10 mins- bloods and wee test and I was done. My midwife didn’t ask about symptoms or anything- don’t really know if it’s in their remit. Am at 23 weeks- had 2 midwife calls (1 was because I’m rhesus negative) and one was my 16 week appointment. Had a scan at 20 weeks and my next telephone appointment is in May. Not sure when I’m seeing the midwife team in person again!

Sorry hope to not put a downer on it, as it wasn’t what I expected either, but think it seems common!

Any concerns do call your GP- mine put me on vomiting meds and they can refer you to EPU if necessary!

There’s very little until you have the first scan really. If you’re bleeding you can ring ur early pregnancy unit and they’ll do ur bloods and sometimes an early scan. Other than that you could always book a private scan for reassurance they tend to be run by sonographers at the local hospital in their spare time, I would recommend them as they will give u more time and make it more special x

@K821 Hi lovely.

So I’ve been in your situation recently! I’m 9 weeks - firstly on symptoms. Don’t stress, it’s drummed into us that we should experience various symptoms. I did have sore boobs, headaches and a missed period - that’s it. And even those dwindled, some days I would wake up and feel nothing! It really made me panic.

When the time came to book in - I only had a phone call from a “cover” midwife last week - the usual one in the practice is on leave. She rang literally to take some details and said the other midwife would make contact - I’ve had nothing since.

Last week I had a bleed, so I rang 101 because of the lack of contact with my midwife! I had a call back from an on duty doctor who went through my symptoms and then referred me to the early pregnancy unit in the hospital. I went there, had blood tests and a scan and everything is fine. So if you’re worried, just ring 101! I’ve not found my practice supportive at all and it’s a shame.

On the bleeding - you can have implantation bleeding at 6 weeks! As I said I had a proper bleed last week, it’s not always a bad thing. You only need to worry if you are getting cramps, and start to pass tissue and clots. They won’t scan you before 6 weeks as sometimes the sac isn’t visible then it’s too early. If you’re worried just ring them, and put your mind at ease 💕 xx

It’s normal but I was shocked how little interaction you have with GP/midwife in the early stages. I just wanted someone to confirm my pregnancy and always presumed I would have a blood test or something. It’s such a relief once you’ve had your booking appointment with your midwife and it starts to feel so much more real.

dopeyduck · 14/04/2021 20:30

All normal. Congratulations. Be kind to yourself and rest. All the best for your scan.

Scarletpig1 · 14/04/2021 20:41

Yeah with my first I had the thought of what if there's nothing there at the 12 week scan Grin
