Heparin + recurrent miscarriage?

Hi all - I’ve been down the recurrent miscarriage clinic route after three early losses. They didn’t find a cause, but did find a fairly common gene mutation that can increase the risk of clotting in general. They’ve said I should be on heparin throughout my next pregnancy, although this won’t help with the miscarriages. Daily heparin injections seems very invasive and high stress - for a gene mutation that is apparently quite common. I can’t figure out if the extra stress is worth it, or if this is an overly cautious / excessive treatment path. I paid to go privately - so nervous they might be over-treating something that I otherwise wouldn’t have known about and that the nhs wouldn’t consider worth doing. Any advice or similar experiences?

Hi, what is the gene mutation you have been diagnosed with?

Not sure if my experience is similar but I had one MMC in 2019. Already knew I had factor v Leiden (but only the one gene - so very common). With that pregnancy I was only on aspirin. Even though I've just had the one loss I was fortunate I be referred to a consultant on nhs who recommended daily clexane/heparin in any future pregnancy as a precaution. I'm now 30 weeks pregnant and all has been well with this pregnancy. I was on aspirin from positive test and injections from 6 weeks. For me the worry of losing another pregnancy was more significant than having to inject daily. I used to be a complete needle-phobe but honestly I do the injections without batting an eye lid now. The injections are not thought to pose any risk to baby so in my mind even though it is quite an invasive treatment option it felt like I had nothing to lose.

So depending on your diagnosis - that has been my experience with the nhs and treatment offered for factor v which is very common. In fact other relatives of mine who also have the same diagnosis have had successful pregnancies without any treatment. My risk factors were slightly increased though apparently as I have two first degree relatives who've experienced significant blood clots 🤷🏼‍♀️. Hope that helps a little. Good luck with whatever you chose to do!

I am pregnant currently and am on twice daily heparin injections for a blood clot.

It is a very minor inconvenience once you get used to the bruising and the fact that it's nigh on impossible to get a new sharps box 🙄 but that's a minor pet peeve!
