Choosing a pram - 2nd hand?

Just after some advice/opinions. This is my first pregnancy, so everything is totally new to me. Due in September and have just started looking at prams/travel systems.

Have had a couple of people advise me to search places like fb marketplace and eBay for good quality second hand ones, but just a little worried about them not being under warranty if something went wrong. I've seen a particular make and design id like and 2nd hand they are going for up to £300. Just worry it's a lot to pay and have no guarantee included. However the alternative is spending more than double that for brand new?

Just wondering what others have done? Thanks x

I got silvercross travel system on gumtree. Whole lot £160 with two isofix bases included. Good as new, absolute bargain. Didn't even think about warranty tbh. If the pram looks and feels ok when you pick it up I wouldn't worry- I think they are generally pretty robust. In my opinion second hand much better option than paying £1k plus for new. I'm always telling people to try reusing first! Better for your pocket and environment.

It's up to you, if you have the money and can justify spending £500-£1000+ for a pram, do it.
If not buy second hand, just make sure you throughly check it over before you take it.

I didn't even think about the warranty when I bought second hand. Generally not a lot goes wrong with prams anyway (and second hand + repair would still be cheaper than buying new). If you can try it out before buying it, you'll get an idea of the condition it's in. Much better for the environment too.

I was lucky enough to be given three (!!) second hand prams & pushchairs, all were perfectly fine. It's up to you how to spend your money of course but the marketing tactics are incredibly persuasive for new parents .... spend your money wisely.

Some people sell prams that are still under warranty. I bought new with my first, spent over 1000 then sold it less than a year later for £190. IMO if you can find one you like second hand that's in good condition I'd do it, they're so expensive for how long you use them & a lot of second hand ones are in fab condition anyway.

I’d 100% say buy second hand. You can spend £1000 on a new one and if you want to resell it you’ll get a fraction of that back.

There are some absolute bargains to be had second hand. If there’s a particular brand/model you want then there are even some specific Facebook selling pages, for example for bugaboo or Icandy etc. As well as Facebook marketplace. Gumtree is also great.
As a pp said, i wouldn’t worry about warranty, if it looks and feels sturdy when you check it out, then it’s likely it’s good. What you see is pretty much what you get with prams. I’ve been through my fair share over the years! Lol.

Good rule of thumb is don't pay more than a third of full price for something second hand.

Parkandride · 14/04/2021 08:47

I didn't even think about the warranty, but we've got a £1k pram for £80 - so I could buy 10 more and still be better off. Spare parts are easily available too

LlamaGiles · 14/04/2021 08:49

I bought 2nd hand and was really glad I did because I actually didn't like the pram. I ended up buying a different one new in the end. Glad I didn't buy the first one new!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 14/04/2021 08:53

I never considered warranty on prams. I bought a new one for dc1 and used it halfway through dc2, before picking up a 2nd hand one for the last year of dc2 needing one.

I think it's more about finding the right one for you and your needs. You then either buy it new or second hand depending on cost/availability.

Having a pram/pushchair that doesn't fit your needs is worse than having one with/without a warranty.

itsjustthewayitis · 14/04/2021 08:59

Don't forget people often list their second hand things for way more than they're actually worth. So they may be listed for £300 but I doubt they're actually selling for that much.
Don't run to buy one when you see it listed, wait, it'll probably hang around for a while and they'll drop the price.

1st baby look at it as an investment that you can use for any future children too.
Back in 2015 when I had my 1st the travel system I got cost less than £300, we used that for our 1st 3 children and the only thing that went on it was a wheel clip which was cheaply replaced. When we had twins we were limited on boot space so had to go with a double stroller, went through 2 of them for our girls as we got a dog so the prams were used a lot more. Getting the single version of the twin one this time.

Chelyanne · 14/04/2021 09:31

That was the NEW price, I think the prices these days are disgusting.

Tokyo87 · 14/04/2021 11:58

Wow, thanks for your advice everyone, think it's made me realise i was over worrying. My mind is more at ease now for buying second hand. Thanks for those that have suggested gumtree, wasn't somewhere I had thought of before

I’d say keep shopping around, I’ve just bought a travel system for £160 brand new and it’s lovely, great quality. I’m having my third baby and this is the third pram I’ve bought the first one I spent £1000 and There isn’t a big difference except the brand, that’s usually what you pay for. xXx good luck
