Nausea is ruining everything

I had hyperemesis in last 2 pregnancies, this one is just nausea so far but it’s consuming my life. I’m only 7-8 weeks and I have two small children to care for (school runs, 1 year old at home, dinners to make etc). I am trying everything that has helped with nausea in the past.. eating small amounts often, ice lollies, ice, mints, sweets etc..

It’s so bad we’re now considering a termination, something which we never thought we’d have to do in a million years.

My DC1 said to me that I don’t laugh anymore and they’re right, I’m miserable.

I’ve been given ondansetron but BNF says it’s not safe in first trimester (cleft palate risk) and GP won’t give me anything else, not even cyclizine (which I had in last 2 PG) and buccal.

I’m at my wits ends, I can’t function and so low.

I know it could be worse that I could be actually vomiting but I’ve been there before and the vomiting actually brought temporary relief whereas this is constant

@Littletoaster2021 I knew it didn’t sound right! I was adamant that I wanted the cyclizine and buccal and she said absolutely not and gave me Ondansetron and said “these are very expensive and deemed the best” but on the BNF says to avoid before 12 weeks because of cleft palate risk. I’ll give pregnancy sickness support a call!

@Bythefire90 oooh that’s infuriating! In contrast, my GP resisted giving me Ondansetron because of the cleft risk, even though it’s not considered a risk after 12 weeks!
I now ask for any other doctor when I call the surgery and have found the others way more informed and happy to prescribe. That might be one way round it...

Ive just called pregnancy support who armed me with the most amazing information, I can’t believe I’ve never called them before! They’re gonna send over an email with a list of safe combo meds ahead of a GP appointment I’ve made this morning so I can ask specifically for certain meds. Thank you so much everyone for your compassion, support and advice this morning! This could really change things for us as a family moving forward so thank you!

Hi OP I too was on cyclizine for nausea ( no sickness) you have my sympathy it's absolutely awful. I'm now 26 weeks and stopped taking it at 14 weeks as the nausea had passed and I feel great now. I really hope you get your hands on some and you have the same outcome. Take care xx

pinguwings · 14/04/2021 09:55

So glad you've called pregnancy sickness support. They are incredible and have all the knowledge!
I honestly credit them with DD2's life as we came so close to termination.
Sending you lots of gentle healing. It's unbelievably shit but there is an end (a long way) in sight.

Good luck @Bythefire90 great to hear you sounding more positive.

Can I also say please do ask for (practical ) help. People will gladly help you. I helped out a friend who had hg by taking her kids to school every morning. I was delighted to help. Flowers

LeaveMyDamnJam · 14/04/2021 10:10

I can’t help but I can empathise. I had the very same when I was pregnant with my DS. I didn’t have other children, so god knows how you are coping. 💐

marplemead · 14/04/2021 10:11

Good luck for your GP appointment OP - I'm glad you have finally had some support, and hope you get the meds you need.

I had HG in my first pregnancy, and currently really suffering with all day nausea at 13wks, which feels so much worse. I think I'd prefer the vomiting, as at least there is some relief.

NamiSwan · 14/04/2021 11:22

@mamajules32 all three of mine are girls! When I got nausea at 5 weeks with DD3 I just knew straight away I was having another girl.

Mishmased · 14/04/2021 12:47

@Bythefire90 this is my third pregnancy (33 weeks) and firsts time with nausea and I still suffer from it now. I got prescribed stemetil (prochlorperazine) didn't really work and then got prescribed Cariban which worked better but makes you drowsy. Maybe try Cariban? Hope it eases for you. Soon.

Mishmased · 14/04/2021 12:51

@mamajules32 my first two pregnancies nothing smooth sailing no symptom whatsoever. My current pregnancy I have had nausea all day from 6 weeks until now (33 weeks) so we think this is a girl.

UturnUna · 14/04/2021 12:56

I had that - relentless nausea without vomiting and yep it's awful - a wall you can't get past. I lived on fizzy pop and alka selzer and a lot of belching basically. I had some tablets, Stemetil? They were okay, my tip for anti sickness tablets is to shove them in your mouth literally the moment you wake up, when you're still drowsy. If I could get them in then, I stayed non nauseous from being asleep (managed OK at nights), but if I woke up, once the nausea would take hold the pills didn't help at all. It was almost like tricking my brain to stay non nauseous, as opposed to taking away the nausea. Not sure that made much sense but it did help me.

UturnUna · 14/04/2021 12:57

I had no nausea in my first pregnancy, loved every minute and as I said terrible nausea the second time - both boys!

namechangemarch21 · 14/04/2021 14:34

So glad you called OP. I'm on caraban and its made my nausea disappear. People get treated so differently depending on their GP, its absolutely appalling how badly pregnant women are treated. I absolutely couldn't function before starting them and I only have one toddler and it was impossible. I really hope you can find drugs that work for you.
