Hi everyone, I probably sound so stupid but I’ve just had myself a mr whippy ice cream from the van, only to know be told it can basically kill my baby. I’m 12+1 and everything and anything is worrying me, I’ve recently had to deal with brown discharge and now the thought of this ice cream craving ruining my life has taking a toll on me. And I’m unsure how do I no if my baby’s okay & will we be affected? Please said prayers and hope my way! I hope this baby stays with me full term healthy and full of life!

How would it kill your baby? Who the fuck told you that?

I hope your baby goes full term too (if you’ve got this far odd are it will!) but I very much doubt Mr bloody Whippy will have any bearing on it.

IHateCoronavirus · 13/04/2021 19:14

Chances are your baby will be untroubled by the ice cream. The fear and responsibility of something happening during pregnancy can be intense op. Try to find ways to ground you in the moment, like smelling or touching something as a bit of mindfulness.
Fingers and toes crossed for you here and prayers being said that your baby is born happy and well and until that day you are able to relax Flowers

Nat4392 · 13/04/2021 19:17

Why on Earth would you think ice cream would kill you baby? Is this a troll? If it isn’t, OP you seriously need to speak to your midwife about your anxiety.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 13/04/2021 19:19

Deffo speak to your midwife because freaking out about an ice cream is quite worrying. I do get pregnancy fear in the early stages is a really real thing but there’s perspective to be had.

EXA1912 · 13/04/2021 19:21

You’ll be fine and so will your baby, don’t worry. X

Rosieposy89 · 13/04/2021 19:24

You won't have killed your baby by eating a Mr Whippy. Yes its advisable to avoid them because of the risk of listeria but the risk is very, very low anyway. There's only 200 cases a year of it.

Chelyanne · 13/04/2021 19:29

What?! I had one at the weekend and had several in previous pregnancies too. Never even thought they would do harm, not had a problem before so fingers crossed will be fine this time.

Thing is there are so many things that "might" cause problems but the chances are extremely low so highly unlikely to cause you issues.

Lae0514 · 13/04/2021 20:09

I knew it sounds stupid, everything I’ve read about a mr whippy or ice cream from a van, can be very dangerous for the baby, with the risk of listeria. I’m only 17 and a first time mum and been trying to do everything and anything I can to make sure baby’s okay.. so this today has quite scared to me, reading all the negative posts and the causes and I would feel awful knowing I’ve done something that could affect my baby, but thank you all for your prayers and kind messages I’m going to probably ring the midwife over my anxieties and hope baby’s okay and healthy and just perfect! But thanks again, I just feel horrible now knowing I could’ve avoided it I guess

You can only do the best you can do, with the knowledge you have at that time. When you ate the ice cream you didn’t realise the (very small) risk.

None of us are perfect, I’m pretty sure all of us will look back and wish we had done something different for our children.

You sound as if you are trying your best op, that love and care is all your baby needs. Try to let go of the guilt, your baby is already luckier than many just by having a mum who cares. Bear

kingfisher657 · 13/04/2021 21:37

If you did get listeria, you would know about it! It apparently makes you really sick. So as long as you aren't showing symptoms of bad food poisoning, everything should be fine. As others have said, the risk of actually catching listeria is really really low.

I would definitely ring your midwife, just to talk through your anxieties - it is so hard to do everything "right" and there is so much pressure and paranoia out there. I'm sure it doesn't get any easier when the baby comes (I'm 29 weeks myself) so it's important to figure out how to manage your Mum Guilt early!

Lae0514 · 13/04/2021 22:11

Thank you so much!! I just keep worrying myself i want do everything right. I still feel like I’m young and need to prove everyone I’m just as good, so mistakes just put me down. I’ve been experiencing brown discharge recently so my
Pregnancy has been quite worrying so every little thing I’m picking up on.. and when I try be brave and try new foods it backfires clearly lol.. but I have a feeling baby will be fine and healthy & I will carry full term & I feel so lucky to have this opportunity and gift of life. I don’t want to ruin it.

Please try not to worry and just stick with the nhs foods to avoid list. I also suffer anxiety especially when pregnant but you really don’t need to worry about this. Absolutely speak to your midwife for reassurance

Foxhasbigsocks · 14/04/2021 00:15

Op I get these worries. I felt like this all the time when I was pg. in case it makes you feel better when I had my oldest we hadn’t been told not to eat soft icecream so I’m sure I did and dd is fine.

Obviously don’t eat any more now but the likelihood of anything going wrong is tiny Flowers

Troyhelena · 14/04/2021 08:45

In the nicest way, you must stop reading into and about every little thing
You could google anything and put ‘miscarriage’ next to it in the search bar and I’d almost guarantee you’d find some results saying XXX causes miscarriage.
Your baby thank goodness is well at 12 weeks so the risks are so slim of anything happening! Regardless of what the internet might tell you, they’re very resilient once you’re out of early pregnancy.
Just think, there are some women who drink every weekend and go partying right up until the baby is born without even knowing they’re pregnant! And baby is fine!
So I’m sure your ice cream can be enjoyed without fear Smile

ElderMillennial · 14/04/2021 16:30

You've had it now. Most of us eat something during pregnancy that maybe we shouldn't have.

If you're really worried speak to your midwife but I expect she'll tell you not to worry.

Milkshake7489 · 14/04/2021 16:35

I could have written your post last year OP. Brown discharge is such a worry and I freaked myself out after eating a Mr whippy at the beach at almost exactly the same gestation as you!

The chance of listeria is tiny so try not to worry Smile.

vixey · 14/04/2021 17:12

honestly some of the replies on here are enough to make any one scared of ever sharing their worries!

to the OP, its completely natural because these so much misleading information, last week I was told that I'd seriously harm my baby because i drank pineapple juice, and my brain absolutely made my thoughts spiral. I'm sure one ice cream isn't going to harm your baby but if you are concerned then get in touch with your midwife and just explain. I'm sure it won't be the daftest or worst thing that's ever been asked. she'll have seen it all, I can assure you.

Peaplant20 · 14/04/2021 19:00

You’ll be fine the risk is very very low. Like someone else said, if you Google anything it will come up with some horror stories. Try and stick to the NHS food lists and take general hygiene precautions like washing fruit and veg, not eating from dodgy kebab vans! I’ve eaten a few subways and I know people on here have said they wouldn’t eat at subway because of the risk of listeria on the salad (??) too but my local one has a high hygiene rating and I figure you can’t not eat anything at all! And unlike some of the other posters I don’t think you’re silly to worry, it’s natural :) x

vixey · 14/04/2021 19:16

@lae0514 , honestly if you listened to everyone's opinions you'd end up starving yourself. I've been told philidelphia isn't safe but I was craving it, asked my midwife and she said its a myth, just because it's a soft cheese, but its pasteurised so it's fine.
