What to dress baby in?

Hi all, first pregnancy here.

I want to make sure I get all the necessary bits and pieces clothing wise but I’m a massive over thinker!

Baby is due very end of June and I know UK weather can be unpredictable.

Can anyone give me a rundown of what you are typically supposed to dress your baby in during the day and then at night? Would be helpful to know what to dress them in when it’s cold and when it’s warmer both day and night (providing we get some warmer weather again!) There’s just so many things out there (long sleeve vests, short sleeve, sleeveless, bodysuits etc)

I know this is a really basic question but I get so confused looking online and don’t want to buy things unnecessarily.

Thanks!

First 5 months at least my boy lived in short sleeved vest and sleep suit (baby grow) full melon outfits are a pain and if you have a sicky baby you will go through a fair few a day!

Warmer- no vest
Warmer still - rompa style shorts teeshirt
Hot - vest
Red hot - nappy
Cooler - vest baby grow
Cooler still - long sleeved vest baby grow
Outside warm - vest baby grow light cardi
Outside cool - vest baby grow cardi hat blanket

Hat all the time outside. Cooler - wool mild - cotton warm- sun hat

Day time - vest baby grow
Night time - clean vest clean baby grow

General rule of thumb one more layer than you and a hat when outside

That's a great list @Whatelsecouldibecalled!
I agree, selection of different sleeve length vests and sleepsuits was pretty much all DD lived in til she started crawling. I would maybe add a footless long leg and sleeve romper or two to go with the shortie rompers (they were worn a lot too, summer baby) but DC2 will be wearing very much the same. The odd 'outfit' is nice for a change but such a faff. I've got loads of pairs of unworn baby leggings in the loft but DD lives in them since she became mobile.

Hi !

So I dress my 6m DD as follows:

Warm weather day:

  • if really hot then it's a sun hat, vest bodysuit, cotton leggings, open pram sandals. The sandals aren't necessary just v cute. I then bring along socks and a thin cardigan.

Warm weather night:Vest bodysuit and a Shorts romper from Next, thin socks. I then use 0.5/1 tog sleeping bag. If very hot which is rare, I wouldn't use a sleeping bag and just the clothes.

Cold weather day: short/long sleeve bodysuit, outfit on top, cardigan , coat on top or pram suit, leggings, socks and a blanket.

Cold weather night: bodysuit with a baby grow or pjs, socks, thick tog sleeping bag

Changeable weather day: short sleeve bodysuit, outfit on top, cardigan on top, pack a sun hat and a coat just in case of sun or rain.

I usually buy from Next or H and M for outfits as the quality and price feel ok for me plus a lot of their collections colour match so you can throw things together easily. I do buy from Zara but only in the sales as prices can be similar to adult if not! I tend to get my bodysuits and pjs from Asda or Sainsbury's, sometimes outfits.

Additionally: if very very hot or holiday then potentially just a nappy and a cotton vest bodysuit.

If very very cold lots of layers so you can add/remove as needed when you go from place to place.

Same as a PP said usually one extra layer than an adult especially when so little as they don't move much to generate heat

Really hot, just a vest or just a short sleeve romper.

Normal days a short sleeved vest and then over that either a sleepsuit or top/trousers combo, or a long sleeved vest and dungarees/dress combo. These probably with socks.

Cold days add a cardigan, and blankets as and when. No jumpers yet as their heads are too big and wobbly.

Night time same except I'd only do vest / vest and sleepsuit and then add blanket layers to keep warm or sleeping bags.

Once they're mobile and tend to kick blankets off I'd add under layers or over layers instead - so tights or leggings under trousers for example, hoodie/cardigan/jumper over the top of long sleeved top.

Didn't bother much with hats. Sunhats no good until they can sit up, so you won't need one that first summer. Keep them in the shade. A warm hat for the winter is useful to have.

Standard outfit for us is short-sleeved vest with babygrow (aka sleepsuit) on top. Agree the choice of clothes etc overwhelming for FTM! Would suggest sticking with babygrows- we were given some cute outfits with buttons etc. Feel a bit guilty but most of these have only been worn once for a photo but way too much faff!

At night the baby sleeping bags are very good. If you look at the grobag website they have a handy guide for what to dress baby in at night depending on the temperature in the bedroom. It's recommended not to overheat baby whilst sleeping.
