My husband and I are expecting our first baby in September and are starting to think about what we'll need.

I know it's recommended that baby sleeps in our room for the first 6 months, so we were planning to get a Snuzpod or similar, with the cot set up in the nursery to be used after 6 months. My husband asked me earlier why we couldn't just have the cot in our bedroom and then move it into the nursery later. Does anyone do this? I assume the point of the Snuzpod is so you don't have to get up to settle the baby?

My mum also recommended that we get a moses basket but that means the baby will have 3 different places to sleep (4 if we also get a travel cot!), which seems a lot?

Sorry if this is a ridiculous question, but we had our first visit to Mamas & Papas today and feeling a bit overwhelmed!

I'm expecting a baby in August also a FTM and yes I agree very over-whelming.

We have bought a snuz pod and a cot, (the cot won't fit in our bedroom) but if the cot fits in your bedroom that's fine but may mean you can't be directly next to baby, which is fine just depends on what you want.

We have a bought a pram with a carry cot that is suitable for overnight sleeping so baby will be there in the day for naps.

It does however mean I now need to buy 3 sets of bedding all different sizes.

The snuzpod is portable and can be moved downstairs if needed but we didn't want to be moving it up and down the stairs daily as it is bulky.

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 10/04/2021 18:09

Yes you can put the cot next to the bed. It depends on the height and type of bed and cot you have but it's possible to make a space like this photo. I think the reason people get moses baskets etc is just to make the baby a bit more snug than a tiny baby in a massive cot and so they can move it downstairs etc but it's not essential at all.
Whereever you put the baby you will need to get up in the night to feed it and settle it.

@SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel

How do you make sure the duvet doesn't accidentally cover baby?

This thought scares me and I am so scared to take the side of our snuz pod down?

Also in case of an early roller e.g. before 6months could they fall between the gap in between bed and cot? Our pod won't attach to bed.

Probably over thinking but I literally cannot comprehend how your set up works?

Fispi · 10/04/2021 18:23

I had a side car crib (same idea as the snuz) for my first but it was barely used and outgrown by 5 months, I spent hours walking up and down with screaming DC so it didnt stop me being up lots in the night. I got a second hand cot bed for £30 and a new mattress, DC was in that till 3 and is now in a single bed. This time I'm borrowing a swinging crib and will use the cot bed again when baby is too big/active for the crib.

Fispi · 10/04/2021 18:27

Oh and I found shuffling down to the bottom of the bed to get out around the crib attached to the bed really annoying!

PurplePinkParade · 10/04/2021 18:32

I had a Chicco next to me with DD last time 4 years ago. I won't bother this time. DD never ended up using it, in the early days BF to sleep and always ended up sleeping in bed with me. As soon as I moved her the tiniest bit, she would wake up and scream. The rare times she did fall asleep next to me in the Chicco, after 2 hours she'd wake up, see me sleeping next to he and scream Hmm
By the time she learned to self settle she was too big for it and moved to her own room anyway!

This time I'm getting a proper cot, setting it up in the corner of our bedroom with a rocker. Plan to BF the baby and persevere with getting them to sleep in a cot at a young age.

PutOnAHappyFace · 10/04/2021 18:32

We have a snuz pod for baby number 4. Some of my babies like the security of a smaller space while one of them didn't mind the big cot after a few weeks in a Moses basket. Going from a small womb to a big cot can be a big thing so some just won't settle striaght into a cot. I believe that's the thinking behind moses baskets and bedside cribs.

Caspianberg · 10/04/2021 18:36

We have cot bed in our room and was going to use from birth, but then once he was born I wanted him closer so bought a Chico next to me crib. It was nice having it attached.

However he started rolling and pulling himself up at 4 months and was crawling by 5 months so we only used the crib 4 months due to safety. I’m glad his cot fits in our room as he’s now 11 months and still sharing our room as wakes still and it’s just easier.

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 10/04/2021 18:37

Just need to point out that photo is not mine, I got it off Google images so you could see what I meant about how to have the cot.

Lyra I absolutely know what you mean. For my first child we used a moses basket, but the baby was so unsettled that half the time we ended up cosleeping anyway in an u planned way which felt more risky, so the second time we embraced it and planned to have the big cot like that right from the start as felt safer than just tucking the baby in next to me in our bed when we were exhausted.

Re the duvet, I just put the baby over on the far side of the cot and kept my duvet tucked in underneath me, but yes I suppose the duvet could potentially stray. You could always keep the cot side on to completely avoid this.

With the rolling thing, our cot was against the wall and right up to our bed so there was no gap, but it does depend on the type of bed and cot you have. Basically when the baby becomes more mobile you put the side back on the cot so it can't shuffle over, but even if you didn't there is no gap to fall down.

I think really the set up we had really helps in the first few weeks when all the baby wants to do is be right next to you. You might get lucky with a perfect sleeper but more likely there will be nights in the early days where the baby cries every time you put it down. If it knows you are close it will be more settled. But yeah, you could always leave the side on the cot if you were concerned.

LyraShaeLilly · 10/04/2021 18:40

Hoping my baby will like their sleep as much as their mum does.

I'm sure it doesn't work like that though!!

SunInTheSkyYouKnowHowIFeel · 10/04/2021 18:45

There is always hope!

The thing to remember in those long dark wakeful nights is that you don't need as much sleep as you thought you did pre children, you can get by on so much less than you ever thought possible Wink

That said, I hope you get a good sleeper!

georgarina · 10/04/2021 19:16

For my first baby I had a Moses basket with a Sleepyhead inside - the reality was I ended up putting the Sleepyhead next to me in bed and he slept in that, it was the only way either of us got any sleep.

He moved into a cot around 4 months.

This time I've got a Snuzpod and I'm planning to fit it to the bed and put the Sleepyhead inside. But realistically will probably end up with the same scenario.

PinkCookie11 · 10/04/2021 19:18

We had a Moses which we took up and down the stairs each day, annoying! Next time I’ll get a next to me for upstairs.
Where will your LO be sleeping when your downstairs? Assuming that’s why your mum said to get a Moses.

StevieG55 · 10/04/2021 19:34

We had a snuzpod I'd really recommend it. We also had cot in the baby bedroom and a Moses basket for downstairs. We did use all 3. We had travel cot too and pop up bassinet for when we went away when she was tiny.

The top comes off the snuzpod but it's bulky and heavy so I wasn't able to carry it up and down the stairs like it makes out is easy to do.

We borrowed Moses basket from my sister. They aren't expensive to buy though.

Amichelle84 · 10/04/2021 19:58

I had a Chicco crib but didn't have it as a next to me. We had an antique cot which we had to wait for, but as soon as that came he slept in that by my bed and we use the chicco one as a travel cot.

We had a Moses basket for day time naps in the front room. Wouldn't say it's necessary though l, you can use the cot but it was quite handy especially during the first few months.

KitchenWarrior · 10/04/2021 20:12

I had the cot by my bed with the Moses basket standing inside it for the first few months. When the Moses basket came our I added a bed guard so DC couldn't fall between the bed and the cot.

Our master bedroom is huge but it felt pretty cramped with the cot alongside our king size bed so I'd imagine space is why this isn't a particularly common set up.

Totally second the upstairs/downstairs Moses basket!

KitchenWarrior · 10/04/2021 20:14

"I had the cot by my bed" I meant to say I.e. as in the picture above.

Ella267 · 11/04/2021 10:50

Thanks all!

I've heard it's common for babies to hate cots and even bedside cribs when they're vet small as the space is just too big.

We've bought a cot although this won't be used in the first 6 months, a Moses basket for the first couple of weeks which thereafter will probably be used for downstairs naps, and a bedside crib.

The bedside crib we got is the Tutti Bambini and I love it so far, took less than 5 mins to set up and is so light and portable it can be used as a travel cot as well. I know looks aren't super important but i think it looks much nicer than the Snuzpod as well. I am a bit scared of using it as a co-sleeping crib with the side dropped down though, think I will initially stick to using it as a standalone crib next to our bed.

It is annoying having to get 3 different sizes of bedding, we haven't got ours yet but planning on getting them cheaper from eg Boots or similar as everything we have bought is a standard size so I dont necessarily need to buy branded Tutti Bambini sheets which are pretty pricey!

We have a moses basket which baby has slept in reasonably happily since the start. Once she outgrows that will be getting a cot bed.

Choclover89 · 11/04/2021 13:56

We had moses basket by the bed (which we'd also take for staying at grandparents) until 2.5 months when she got too big. Then we could fit the cot bed by our bed so put that in our room until 6 months when we moved it to her room.

For the first 10 days, she wouldn't be put down at all! We tried everything and then someone suggested we try one of the baby sleeping bags (we had bought traditional bedding blankets etc) and it was like a miracle! Might be worth a try if you end up with the same situation whatever cot type you go for Smile
