Hot tub- pregnancy

If we set the hot tub to 35, and don't have the bubbles on, will this be ok while pregnant, we always keep a good eye on the chlorine as 3 young children use it too?

Having owed a hot tub myself at one point, I don’t think I could go in one pregnant. Even a Luke warm to hot bath gets me really uncomfortable however the manufacturer’s say up to 20 minutes is acceptable for pregnant women so totally up to you in the end.

angel0071987 · 10/04/2021 08:10

So long as it's less than body temperature and you know it's clean/chemicals at right level you should be fine. Hotter than body temperature = boil in bag baby!

Skymum82 · 10/04/2021 08:32

I don't mind it cooler we normally do any way, well we normally set it 35 in the day and me and hubby would get in at night at 39 😂. But clearly I know that won't be happening.
For me the water helps with my hips, my other pregnancies I did a lot of swimming but due to COVID I won't be. Be a nice way to cool down in the summer too. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I wouldn't hesitate but it's your decision to make, OP.
I had many a hot bath in all my pregnancies.
I can tell when I'm overheating. Don't think it happens very easily for me. Grin

Kiyentai · 10/04/2021 08:52

It cannot be more than 100° F of else you will roast your baby and it can create birth defects and affect brain development. Not worth it in my opinion.

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 10/04/2021 09:02

Roast her baby?

What a load of bollocks

Analysethat · 10/04/2021 09:07

@THATbasicSNOWFLAKE

I think the PP is being facetious.

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 10/04/2021 09:11

I bloody hope so!

MrsFin · 10/04/2021 09:28

That can't be right. Women get pregnant in lots of countries where the daily air temp is higher than body temp. Their babies don't boil.

MissingCoffeeandWine · 10/04/2021 10:19

Op, I’ve PGP and have a relatively hot bath every night, the risk is raising your core body temperature and feeling dizzy. I keep a glass of cool water beside me. It keeps me able to move. Was also a swimmer in last pregnancy!! Honestly, do whatever your comfortable with!

Merename · 10/04/2021 10:26

I remember posting a query about this when pregnant and got all the boil your baby drama comments. In practice, I tried to get in on a low heat and it just didn’t feel enjoyable for me so didn’t stay long. I think there’s also something about the risk of infection but I guess since it’s your tub you are in control of the hygiene practices.

Sleepisoverrated150 · 10/04/2021 10:53

All my perfectly formed children should be deformed as I always love a hot bath 🤣🤣

mamaatthegym · 10/04/2021 11:05

I think it’s more a risk of feeling dizzy and fainting than anything else, my parents have one and I was in it a lot over the summer when pregnant with DD and I’ll be doing the same again this year! I had the bubbles on as it felt good on my aching muscles but personal choice Smile

SamoyedFan123 · 10/04/2021 13:20

Hi OP, I have a hot tub and use it on 36 degrees while pregnant (also keep shoulders out of the water and this will prevent overheating). I was warned by my MW not to turn the bubbles / massagers on however - she said something about how they can cause contractions.

Skymum82 · 10/04/2021 14:57

Thanks I guys I certainly don't want to risk any thing, I'm thinking more in the summer holidays with the kids. We will have the cold pool too, I have loungers things for 😂. I will be very far gone by then and it will be so warm so I'm thinking for more cooling down than heating up. Lol.

There was a lit review published a couple of years ago (handily while I was pregnant) that found that pregnant women self-regulate their core temperature very effectively and that even exposure to the high temperatures found in hot tubs/saunas did not raise core temperature to dangerous levels. The conclusion was that you can safely use hot tubs or even saunas/steam rooms for up to 45 minutes at any stage of pregnancy.

After this was published I basically spent the rest of my pregnancy in a hot tub (it was a lifesaver for my PGD!) and so far appear to have a normal child, whatever that is!

That can't be right. Women get pregnant in lots of countries where the daily air temp is higher than body temp. Their babies don't boil.

Except the body can regulate its temperature in air more efficiently than in water.

Therefore, the core temperature rises.

Sweating in water doesn’t do much after all does it.

So funny that people think it could boil the baby hahah

NinaMimi · 10/04/2021 22:28

Yes makes no sense. If it damages the baby it’d surely also boil your internal organs too.

I was going to say exactly the same as you and dig out the research but am pleased you did it first so I didn't have to bother Wink.

I am going on holiday in summer and have paid extra to stay somewhere with a sauna (booked before I was pregnant) and will definitely be using it for small periods of time Smile

ConstantlyIrksome · 10/04/2021 22:59

@MeadowHay That article plus everything I read in "Expecting Better" made pregnancy a vastly improved and less stressful experience. Enjoy your sauna!

Lilice · 10/04/2021 23:48

Just dont stay too long in it if you are worried, like 10 or 15 minutes at a time. 35 degrees is fine.

Quinn26 · 18/05/2021 21:42

Hi @Skymum82 I hope you don't mind me jumping in here, I was just looking for advice while TTC and hot tubs. My excited OH has went out and surprised with one this evening! He been talking about it for a few months now. Anyway I have read that the heat can kill off some of his sperm which I'm slightly concerned about. Did yourself and OH still use your hot tub while TTC? Hope you don't mind me asking x
