Hi Ladies, 2 weeks ago I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I am diet controlled and all going well- then today My midwife called me saying my liver results are slightly raised and they think it might be the obstetric cholestasis :( she said the consultant will call me on Wednesday to discuss... I am devastated, only started feeling better about the GD and now another bad news. I am feeling very low tonight. Have any of you been diagnosed with both? With GD they said I wouldn't have to be induced (good results) but I think it's a different story with cholestasis :( x

Hi - Iv just been diagnosed with cholestasis but I had it with my previous pregnancy but not until 39 weeks.
I am 36 weeks tomorrow. What are your levels?
My ALT is 51 and my bile is 12. Only just raised but the ALT raise has been the most dramatic at the moment.
It's early days and I know it's a scary thing but my hosp have said they won't induce or anything unless absolutely necessary and it's bloods every week at the moment to monitor, they used to just induce at 37 weeks with the diagnosis of OC.
It depends on your hospital. Please don't worry, I know easier said than done but they will keep a close eye on you and that's why I'm also keeping all faith in the docs etc as they have been great and have kept a very close eye x

@3rdtimemomma thank you for your reply and sorry you have been also diagnosed recently. I was really shocked when midwife called me today and I can only remember her saying my results were "10" not sure what that means but will call back tomorrow to double check. She has mentioned the weekly blood tests too but said to wait for the phone call and speak to the consultant first... the thing is I am not itchy but just wonder whether it gets worse with time and I will get itchy eventually? Anyway thank you again x

10 must be bile acids. To be honest I don't think at the moment that's bad, mine are 12 and described as stable. I think just go with what they tell you and they will keep repeating your bloods and monitor you closely.
It's so hard not to worry I know because I just have it in my head that I won't make it to 40 weeks, the bile acids can rise over a 24/48 hour period and I think as the weeks go on it just gets worse unfortunately but they will do what they need to when they need to so I'd trust your doctors x

Iv been itchy, not dramatically but a little bit, yes the itching gets worse as the bile acid levels increase. I think mine we at 80 in my last pregnancy and by that point I was up all night itching! And afterbirth it just goes away!

BridgetJonesDaiquiri · 09/04/2021 22:37

I didn't have GD, but I had OC in my last pregnancy (2019) and probably my first one as well (undiagnosed). The highest my bile acids got to were 106, which is pretty high and definitely in the "more risky to baby" category than yours. I also had high blood pressure at the end of both pregnancies and felt pretty miserable! You have my total sympathies! I feel like I do so well with early and mid-pregnancy, then my body goes to pot at about 34 weeks.

That said, I had great care and a plan. I had my DD2 at 37+1 and a lovely, very straightforward indication.

How are you feeling? I was only moderately itchy with my OC but felt drained of energy and lost weight.

HastingsIsSuckingDiesel · 09/04/2021 22:40

Sorry you're going through this BUT it's brilliant if they've diagnosed OC rather than let it go undiagnosed- at least this way you can be monitored and treated.

I had it diagnosed around 30 weeks. Bile acids of over 40 and crap lfts. Medication (urso) brought it down for a bit but then it kept going up so was induced at 35 weeks. I think they have to induce you by 38 weeks anyway with OC.

Please be kind to yourself and take it easy- the ICP website is a great resource and support.

BridgetJonesDaiquiri · 09/04/2021 22:41

Also to say that make sure you eat before (ideally 30-60 mins) your next blood test for cholestasis. Fasting will reduce the bile acids and the doctors need to see what they're like at their "worst" so to speak to see what levels baby is exposed to. As I said mine were over 100 on one test but also 21 on another later test - they can rise and fall quite a lot naturally and will be affected by eating/not eating

SweetAsANutt · 09/04/2021 23:01

I had GD and induced at 38 weeks. The induction was a positive story and DS born at 38+3. His sugar levels were all good and we went home 14 hours later.
I was on 3x metformin a day. Originally started with diet controlled but they were a bit all over the place. They then increased my metformin but if my levels kept staying high I would of needed insulin but luckily didn't need to have insulin.

My mum and sister both have had ICP but my mum only had ICP when she carried girls. My sister is the only one to have a girl and she also had ICP. My siblings were born early a month or so. I was the earliest and born at 34 weeks. My niece was also born a month early.

The wait must be horrible, especially as it is on Wednesday. Hope everything is okay for you.

@3rdtimemomma hi thank you for your reply. Are you on any medications at the moment? X

There's no "cure" for it so no, not for the actual condition,
But they have prescribed a cream for itching but I haven't used that yet as it's not at the unbearable point! Xx

Hi@Booni

What happened with your pregnancy? I am 35+4 and I was diagnosed with GD 2 days ago and today I was diagnosed with ICP. The annoying thing is that when I had my GTT at 28 weeks my fasting glucose was above normal 5.7 (0.1 more) but no one mentioned anything! So frustrating as I had diabetes symptoms for ages! Now because of my liver I cannot get metformin so I was put to insulin straight away.
