Slapped cheek when pregnant

Currently awaiting blood test results, but gp is pretty sure dd has slapped cheek...

Red cheeks (one more so than the other and a bit rashy), full of a cold but no temp.

I am now wiped out with cold symptoms at 11 weeks pregnant.

So worried, has anyone else been in this situation?

Also is it possible the rash and the cold start at the same time in little ones? And that the rash fades slightly depending on what they are doing? I’m clinging at hope that it might not be Parovirus!

I was exposed to slapped cheek in my last pregnancy. GP ran a blood check on the bloods taken at my booking appointment and was able to confirm that I'd already had it (presumably as a kiddy) and therefore there was no risk. Can they do this for you?

HakunaYourTatas · 09/04/2021 19:20

Yeah I think that’s what they are checking but not feeling too hopeful as I’ve been so ill today. That’s great they could do that for you

Hi, I had the exact same situation as you and did contract parvovirus when pregnant, a couple of years ago. I was one of the c.50% who had not had it as a child.

I researched it a lot at the time and ended up knowing a lot! I also had incredible expert care and luckily my hospital was a leading teaching hospital anyway.

The good news was that my baby didn’t contract it but I had weekly scans for about 12 weeks to check whether she had. I know it is a hideously worrying time - just try to remember that even if you have it it doesn’t mean your baby will and even if your baby does contract it it doesn’t mean they will shows symptoms in utero or become ill.

My two older children at the time (both at nursery, where they’d contracted it I assume though they never showed signs of illness) both had very bright red cheeks but no signs of illness and it was a very hot summer day so I had just put it down to that as they both got fairly pink cheeks with heat quite often anyway - and I didn’t hear about their exposure to parvovirus until afterwards. I had a vague flu-y feeling for a couple of days, so I assume it was that.

Please ask me anything, I understand how worrying it is.

@gilson I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that. It’s so good to know that even if you have it it doesn’t necessarily pass onto the baby but I can imagine that must have been such a worrying time. I’ll call for results on Tuesday if no one calls before so may well be in touch. Thank you so much

@HakunaYourTatas So sorry I have just seen this. I know it’s so hard to say but try not to worry.

Even if you have contracted parvovirus the odds are still very much in your favour. I worried about all kinds of things such as neurological damage to the baby even after all the scans (the nature of pregnancy!) and my now three-year-old daughter is the most wise and sweet of all my four children (I probably shouldn’t say that) and has been since she was born.

I know that’s no consolation now. But please know the odds are in your favour.

Let me know how you are when you have a moment and feel free to message me directly, whatever is best for you.

Hey, I am also in this position, I've contracted parovirus 19 from my son and am 14 weeks pregnant. So worried! I will have weekly scans to see if it has been passed onto the baby.

Sparkleandshine1 · 16/04/2021 20:42

Hi I was told on Wednesday that I have also contracted parvovirus but am only 9 weeks pregnant so I'll have to inform the midwife at my booking appointment next week and will probably have extra scans after my 12 week scan. I have been so ill with really high fevers that I have found difficult to control with paracetamol and I'm so worried. I hope it all goes well for all of us xx

brushlaptop · 16/04/2021 21:04

Hopefully at 9 weeks it won't cross the placenta, at that stage the baby is still using the yolk sack, fingers crossed your body has fought it off by the time the placenta takes over xx

Sparkleandshine1 · 16/04/2021 21:38

Thank you...Though I think the time to cross over is 3-4 weeks after infection. I hope you are right though and all is well for all of us xx

Sorry you are all in this situation. Pretty worried DD has this, she has had bright red cheeks for the last couple of days after a few days of runny nose and irritability. How could I know for sure? The cheek redness seems to come and go, is it a good sign?
I have really bad anxiety about the baby so not sure how I will cope. I am 17 weeks.

brushlaptop · 17/04/2021 09:40

You need to have a blood test for parovirus 19 ASAP xx
