Due date change - baby measuring ahead even though IVF pregnancy?

Hi guys

I had my 12 week scan yesterday after a successful IVF round resulting in twins. The IVF clinic scan and the dates of the procedures dated me as being due on 16th October which would have meant I was 12 weeks and 4 days at the scan. However both babies are measuring ahead and my due date has been changed to 10th October dating me as 13 weeks and 3 days yesterday. I didn’t think due dates changed for IVF babies as the dates are all so precise? Anyone with any experience of this please? I’m now worrying there’s a problem and that’s why the babies are measuring almost a week ahead.

No experience of IVF I’m afraid but I was tracking my ovulation using an OvuSense monitor so do know when I ovulated.

At my nhs scan I was dated a full week ahead of where I should have been. It would mean I got pregnant before I’d even ovulated.

Nobody has said I have anything to worry about. Baby is looking healthy and growing on track etc.

Congrats on your pregnancy!!!

I measured a few days ahead at my first scan (7weeks, IVF) and by my 12 week scan, was measuring over a week ahead ...

As someone who is a smaller size human, mind boggling to be told my child was growing faster than expected ... I’m barely grown myself 🤣

It can be out by a fair bit as babys have growth spurts and can measure further ahead one week and a little behind the average on others.
Our eldest was moved forward 10 days at her dating scan, I had anomaly at 21wk and she was measuring 9 days behind which brought her more inline with lmp but they stuck with the dates. She was induced due to high bp and delivered at 39+6 but still had a lot of vernix on her skin which is usually mostly gone by that gestation.

My daughter was so ivf. She measured larger than dates until 20-odd weeks when her growth slowed right down. At my 12 week scan she was about a week ahead but then born on 12th centile at 40+5...

My due date didn't change with her, but that was my trust's policy. I've heard it's a mixed bag about whether or not they change your actual due date.

My son, not ivf, followed a similar pattern to his older sister.

I got put ahead by 5 days at my dating scan even though I knew the exact date inoculated. To be honest I took it as a good sign that baby was growing well x

Do ask the midwife to reassure yourself. I currently pregnant thorough IVF and measured 8+2 when I was actually 7+6 but they didn’t change my due date as, like you said, they know exactly baby was conceived. I’m currently 34 weeks, at 30 weeks his body measured 30 weeks but his head 33!!! They didn’t seem worried about it at all but I’m more concerned about pushing him out 😬

Xx

DS2 wasn't ivf but there was only one occasion when he could have been conceived. I told the midwife that but my 12 week scan put him a week ahead. I said that wasn't correct but they insisted I'd got my dates wrong (I hadnt)

He was born at 39 weeks officially, really 38 weeks, nothing wrong with him but he was 10lbs so a big baby.

Don't obsess about it. Surely the fact they are growing well is a good sign? It doesn't matter if the 'dates' are off by a few days. They will.probably change again thr next scan. Babies are not a uniform size, so it's never going to be accurate.

MGee123 · 09/04/2021 06:48

It varies by geographical area. Some will stick to IVF dates regardless of scan findings, others move the dates around. It would be unlikely the babies measuring ahead would indicate a problem. I think measuring behind would be more likely to cause concern. Try not to worry, it sounds like they're doing a wonderful job growing in there!

@MF1981 I had exact your scenario in my last pregnancy - IVF twins which were measuring 4 days ahead at the NHS dating scan. The NHS ignored my IVF dates and used their own so my due date was brought forward 4 days.

Thanks all - it’s been really helpful reading your experiences!

With both of mine they measured ahead even though we knew the transfer date. We sort of reached a compromise in the middle of the two dates and went with that.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 09/04/2021 14:29

Take it and run!! My ivf miracle measured a little ahead so my dates got moved slightly

At the end of pregnancy I was bloody glad cos it meant I didn't have as long to wait when I was at the point of being completely done with pregnancy. Even my midwife said to take the earlier date gratefully cos I'd appreciate it at the end. Grin

I measured a week ahead with DS, even though I knew my dates exactly. So they brought my due date forward by a week. DS arrived bang on his original due date, perfectly formed, just a bit large, like all the babies in my family. He's a very normal sized, slim teenager now, but his head has always been quite big (as is mine) although it's not obviousGrin
