I took loratidine through my 1st pregnancy, in fact when I was at Glastonbury I took 5 in one day it was that bad! DS turned out fine

Pandemicpregnancy · 08/04/2021 21:02

I remember phoning my doctor when I was 19 weeks pregnant because my hayfever was horrendous. They said piriton was ok to take when needed.

MGee123 · 08/04/2021 21:33

Any supermarket brand nasal spray is fine and should help with nasal and eye symptoms. Eye drops should be fine too as they and the nasal sprays don't work systemically. Check with your GP before taking any antihistamines - some are okay but a few aren't recommended in pregnancy (including piriton I think, so I'm surprised your GP said that one was okay @Pandemicpregnancy)

Speak to a pharmacist.
And whatever you get, keep taking it, snorting it, dropping it or whatever even when you think the pollen count is low. A lot of things need to build up to be effective so don’t let your guard down.

espressoontap · 08/04/2021 21:42

I took fexofenadine and squirted Avamys - GP was happy to prescribe it. Nothing else works.

Coachee · 08/04/2021 21:43

A pharmacist will tell you that no antihistamines should be taken when pregnant as this what is written in the BNF. A call to the GP is needed and generally as said above they will say that is considered safe to take citrizine (sp?) loratadine or piriton but limit this to only when needed rather than daily. They would also advise to try other ways of tackling symptoms like eye drops and saline spray etc. I find that having liquid tear eye drops plus the thicker ones of nighttime work well for my poor eyes.

One thing that I found worked amazingly was acupuncture! I used to go for something else but the acupuncturist offered to treat my hayfever and by the end of the appointment was gone and I was totally symptom free for 10 days! A bit of a pricey option sadly, so not something I have done often!

I was prescribed paediatric antihistamines while pregnant with DC1. They helped a bit but weren’t great.

Do you wear glasses? That can help shield your eyes a bit. Other barrier methods (snigger) include Vaseline around the nose and eyes. Frequent showering also helps.

Holyforkingshirtball · 08/04/2021 21:58

I went to my docs because nothing but fexofendine with an avimys chaser works. She was happy to prescribe both so I would say get to the docs.

There is no point going to the pharmacy - they are not allowed to recommend ANYTHING if you are pregnant and will refer you straight to the docs - I had to lie and say my opticrom eye drops (which the doc had said were fine) were for my husband before they'd sel them to me.

Lisyloo725 · 12/04/2021 20:47

Oh wow - thank you for all your responses!!!
Yes I’ve had no luck with pharmacists - I have to call the GP!
Some good suggestions here tho 👌🏼👌🏼 to mention to him/her.
Thank you!!!

With my first dd I was told there was nothing you could take, but I found local honey really worked for me. During this pregnancy I've been prescribed Piriton due to inching.

GeorgiePorge · 13/04/2021 09:58

I called the GP on this as get horrendous hayfever and take some prescribed meds for it.
They told me Loratadine is first choice, then Cetirizine, and Piriton if it doesn't make you drowsy.
They also said the nasal sprays you can buy 'off the shelf' - including beconase are fine to use.. personally beconase helps me but takes a few days to kick in.

Good luck!

Rose2108 · 13/04/2021 10:09

I use a balm called haymax... It's actually really good, you just rub it around your nose and your eyes. I noticed it definitely helped the sneezing! I got it from boots, they also sell in Holland and Barrett ☺️

www.sps.nhs.uk/articles/which-medicines-can-be-used-to-treat-intermittent-allergic-rhinitis-during-pregnancy/

I got info off here - used eye drops and steroid nasal spray most days, then had clarityn for back up.
Pharmacist and midwife were no help!

TheGlitterFairy · 13/04/2021 13:29

I was prescribed citirizine last week from the GP/ checked with consultant who agreed it’s fine to take. Pharmacist wouldn’t sell me anything without a prescription!

jul26m · 13/04/2021 15:53

I asked my doctor on the phone today when phoning about something else and she’s prescribing me Loratadine.

Weirdly, my midwife said to get piriton (but not piriteze) as an antihistamine for incredibly itchy feet but pharmacist refused to sell it to me.
