Baby is back to back

Hi guys,

I'm currently 38 weeks and 2 days. I saw the midwife yesterday and she told me baby is back to back (OP) and advised I do exercises to try get her to change positions to anterior (OA).

I've been doing the recommended exercises but silly question - how do I know if she's actually changed to OA from OP? Will I feel her moving?

Sorry I don’t have an answer for you but I’m wondering the same thing. Hopefully other people will be along with an answer!

I'm not sure...I think you will feel the position of her movements has changed. the exercises may work even in labour (check out Spinning Babies if you haven't already). my DD was back to back the whole pregnancy and was also born that way. It was a long labour but not the agony I had been led to believe- the pain was in my back and that was more manageable for me,didn't need more than gas and air.

I think, and I say this as someone who's babies all seem to settle naturally in a back to back position, that you would feel a difference to where your kicks are.

So OP babies you feel lots of movement at the front. Whereas I think OA babies you can feel like their bottom/back on one side and the movement more on the other side. But this is my 5th and I'm still really none the wiser about which bit is which.

With my back to back baby the area around my belly button was flatter and softer

Thank you! I haven't heard of this so I'll definitely look out up. I'm hoping the birth won't be as painful as I've read and I'm hoping she will change position before then or during labour.

Thank you for all your comments. I can definitely see some of the things you’ve pointed out so I’ll keep you posted if I notice things change for those who also wanna know the same thing. Smile

That's lucky for you, I hope you had a smooth delivery despite the baby being back to back.

I'm hoping the labour time lasts a bit longer for me as I also have Group B Strep and need IV antibiotics at least 4hrs before baby is born Confused. This week has been full of complicated pregnancy news 😂

Hi, I just thought I’d update you guys. I had a beautiful healthy little girl on Tuesday. A very fast delivery; I went from 2cm to 10cm within 1hr, unfortunately the pain was horrendous and can only be described as what felt like my back was breaking however I was told by the midwife who helped to deliver the baby that she managed to turn at the very last minute. I did not feel any change in position maybe because of the pain I was feeling while in active labour
