Low lying placenta after 32 weeks - what happens now?

Yesterday I saw a sonographer who scanned and told me my placenta had not moved from where it was close to the cervix, and that it’s still 1.5cm away, so too close currently for anything other than a c-section. He told me to phone my midwife to discuss, which I will when she gets back on shift again. I’m booked in for another scan at 36 weeks but I’m concerned about what might happen if I feel labour coming on before this.

Has anyone else had this and could you shed some light on what I should expect from this point onwards? I’ve had a look at some NHS guidance on google and it seems some trusts refer women to consultant led care at 32 weeks in this situation, but I don’t know yet if that’s the case with mine.

Bump - anyone else experienced this? I know it’s quite rare!

Hopefully your midwife will call you back soon but if you have any worries before then, call your advice line. Have a list of questions to ask your midwife when they call. You’re already wondering about what to do if labour comes on (which hopefully it won’t, the chances are fairly slim). I’d also ask about which activities you should avoid (probably sex) and what to do if you bleed.

My placenta was covering the cervix but I still had to be rescanned at 36 weeks, even though we knew it would be a c-section. My baby was delivered at 38 weeks and everything was fine.

I know it can be scary but try not to worry. Hopefully your midwife will be in touch soon.

Mine moved out of the way between 36 and 37 weeks so there is still chance you will have normal delivery. Quite a big chance I think as there's a lot of growth between now and 36 weeks scan :)

Oh sorry and if you feel labour coming on before this you will ideally be scanned straight away but if no sonography available then I'm not sure but midwife will advise if you just give them a call
