What was your babies NT measurement?

Cafeaulait27 · 05/04/2021 08:46

Hey everyone, I had my 12 week scan last Thursday and got a 2mm measurement for the nuchal translucency at the back of the neck. I was dated at 12+1. I am now waiting for blood results later this week, hoping everything will be fine.

Everything appeared normal on the scan and I know 2mm is good but then I read it will get bigger, so as I was measured at exactly 12 weeks, if it had been measured at say 13+5 would it be bigger and in the danger zone? Or can it not change that much?

Maybe I’m over thinking this! But wondered if any of you would like to share what your babies measurement was, and what your bloods and chance came back as, and if you have had your baby was everything ok?

Thanks 😊

@Ashleys63 NT measurement should be below 3.5 yes, however there is a threshold depending on how far along you are too. Apparently at 12+1 mine should be lower than 2 (more like 1.5)

It doesn’t mean a baby definitely has downs, but it’s a marker for the risk.

I wouldn’t have cvs or amnio unless my bloods came back as increased risk when combined with the NT, so that’s what I’m waiting for.

What’s worrying me is that according to some studies and calculators online, my babies measurement is high for 12 weeks. I assume it keeps getting bigger until 14 weeks then starts to disappear.

I hope that makes sense xx

I'm sorry OP but I really think you are over worrying... But it's not for me to say. If you are suffering anxiety and you can afford it have the blood test but as it stands you don't seem high risk and the blood test only screens for downs as far as I'm aware.

Cafeaulait27 · 05/04/2021 20:24

@doadeer thank you, I hope you’re right 😌

I think because of my pcos and all the issues that throws up for both me and potential pregnancies (miscarriages, infertility, acne, depression, hairiness, hair loss on the head, increased risk of diabetes among other things), I just assume I’m going to have bad luck with everything 😔

Thank god for mumsnet to calm me down! Xx

I have absolutely no idea, or even what this means. I dont think it was a thing when I was pregnant

xoxochellexoxo · 05/04/2021 20:29

I got scanned at 11+4 and NT was measured at 1.4, my scan was on christmas eve and i couldnt get the bloods done till 12+1, i got my results a week later and the combined results with my age (i will be 32 when i give birth) gave me low risk for all tests

WalkingMeAway · 05/04/2021 20:31

In kindness I think you are worrying for no good reason. Your NT measurement is perfectly normal and unless it's over 3.5mm wouldn't be
flagged up as a marker.

You've got a long way to go, I would suggest having a chat with your MW otherwise your anxiety is going to overshadow your pregnancy.

I had severe anxiety in my first pregnancy and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Get some support if you think you may need it xx 😚

Cafeaulait27 · 05/04/2021 20:35

@WalkingMeAway thank you, think I’ve truly lost it today.

I’ve had 2 miscarriages, this is the furthest I’ve got ever. I’ve got pcos and I’m just really hoping this baby makes it, everything did look perfect on the scan xxx

Bless you. Pregnancy is a difficult time without any added pressure. I wish you all the best. I'm sure everything will be fine. Remember statistically everything is in our favour xx

doadeer · 05/04/2021 22:23

@Cafeaulait27 I can't imagine how difficult that was, it's just so heartbreaking. I suppose what I want to say is.... If you spend your entire pregnancy worrying about things that have such a slim chance of happening you will be a mess. You need to stop googling it's not helpful for you. And when the baby comes that's another raft of anxiety and worry... I know it's easier said than done... But try to stop picturing every possible scary thing.

Elouera · 05/04/2021 22:41

Even though there is a generic normal 'range' or under 3mm, my understanding is that age is factored in when they do a proper report. So a scan at say 10 weeks will have a different normal range to a scan at 11, 12 or 13 weeks.

I had the NIPT with my 1st pregnancy which showed a high probability of trisomy 13. They called be back for a more detailed scan. I was 11+4 then and the NT was 6.4mm. Unfortunately the diagnosis was correct.

Your readings do sound normal OP. Best of luck.

RolloTomassi · 05/04/2021 23:03

2.5mm - so higher end, and I was a little nervous.

Combined result came back 1:100,000 and sure enough, baby was fine.

Cafeaulait27 · 06/04/2021 07:42

@doadeer @WalkingMeAway thank you for your kindness ❤️ Hopefully I will be able to relax over the next few days while we wait for results.

@Elouera thank you for your reassurance. I’m so sorry you had bad news xxx

@RolloTomassi thank you that is reassuring xx

Just got my results, came back as:

Downs 1:5670
Edwards/pataus 1:20000

I rang up to get them as I didn’t want to wait for the letter, so don’t have my actual blood results yet. But feeling very relieved 😌

I guess the chance for downs could be a bit lower odds, but I think my age (33) may have been a factor?

I’m 13+2 now, just got to wait until my private scan at 16 weeks. Hopefully it’ll go ok 🤞🍀Xxx

Think of it like this...

That's 0.017% chance.

Cafeaulait27 · 13/04/2021 12:50

Thank you @doadeer! That does help 😊

Didn’t stop me having NIPT at my hospital yesterday though 🙈 hope the results come back ok 🤞

I also got my screening bloods back today, it said the below:

bHCG 0.56 MoM
PAPPA 1.15 MoM

Does anyone know the normal thresholds for these results at all please? Struggling to find it online and the geek in me wants to know 🤓

I really think you need support with your anxiety, OP. Your results all along were perfectly normal and really there was no need for NIPT, but of course that's your decision.

I had 3 MCs before my current pregnancy and had NIPT at 10.5 weeks mostly because if anything was seriously wrong, I'd have rather known asap, and as a bonus I had a viability scan before which helped with reassuring me further. I really don't think NIPT will do much for you now with these results at all.

However, you could do with some MH support by the sounds of it. Pregnancy is an anxious time and all goes well, you can't put yourself through another 27 weeks of constant worry, you need to learn to breathe out. I'm now 23 weeks and of course I still worry, but the key is to try to manage this and be able to talk yourself out of this most anxious frame of mind and additional support could help you with this. Best of luck. xx

Cafeaulait27 · 13/04/2021 13:12

Hi @PurplePansy05 thanks for your concern ❤️

Yeah I am anxious after losses, but tbh we’d always wanted to have NIPT for extra peace of mind as we know it’s more accurate than the combined screening (as did you). The reason we waited to decide until the combined results were in is because if it came back high risk we would get NIPT free from our hospital. As it came back low risk we were weighing up whether to do it or not, and in the end we decided for £350 we’d rather have the extra peace of mind 😊

We were a bit unsure about bothering with NIPT as I’d read that for some of them the accuracy is only something like 50% for edwards and pataus. However when I looked into the SAFE test stats their results are 99% ish for both negative predictive value and positive predictive value for all 3 trisomies.

I hope that gives you a little more context, I realise you may have been alarmed by my previous post but I was kind of laughing at myself really when I said that the combined results ‘didn’t stop me’ from booking the NIPT but I understand it could’ve come across like I have a problem.

I pretty much expect the results of NIPT to come back low chance, but we value the extra peace of mind as many couples do at this time xxx

Smurftastic · 13/04/2021 17:07

OP I don't think it's paranoid- NHS combined test detects only 78% of trisomies in women under 35. This means it misses 1 in 5! That's pretty inaccurate if you ask me. I had NIPT despite being 'low risk' and I think it was a right decision.

Cafeaulait27 · 13/04/2021 17:50

Thank you @Smurftastic ❤️ We really wanted that extra reassurance, and it’s an added bonus that through our hospital it’s a bit cheaper. I think I will relax loads more if we get low chance on the NIPT.

I feel much more relaxed generally just from having the 12 week scan and seeing baby looking good, as we’ve never got to 12 weeks before. But if there’s extra reassurance available we thought we should go for it for the sake of a few hundred £. Xxx

@Cafeaulait27 those hormone levels are measured in MoM which means multiple of median and basically means that the average is 1. Therefore your HCG is lower than average and your Papp-A slightly higher than average. The markers for downs are higher HCG and lower Papp-A so you are the opposite Smile

PurplePansy05 · 15/04/2021 08:58

No one said paranoid and of course NIPT is better. However, from experience the point I'm making is that if you are anxious, which is understandable, it will only bring a very temporary reassurance that most likely os already there with these results. The following week/fortnight/month later, you'll be worrying about something else as the pregnancy progresses. It's very hard to manage but it's necessary as not everything can always be checked or excluded. NIPT is not a guarantee either, unfortunately. There is a line to be drawn for your own health is all I'm saying, but it is very difficult and I'm still struggling sometimes. x

Cafeaulait27 · 16/04/2021 13:13

Just got the call and we were told the results are low chance 1 in 100,000 for all 3 trisomies.

100,000 is the lowest chance for the SAFE test so we’re super happyyyy xxx
