How many nappies and which sizes for newborn?

Hi all! I may have gone over the top and got myself 5 newborn size nappies of 20-24 nappies each (first time mum Blush) in size 1. What sizes and how many of each did you stock for your newborns? I may have to get some size 2 packs and donate whatever is left of the size 1 packs to charity.

It will depend on your baby s size.
But i think you will be ok with 5 packs. Doesn't sound excessive to me...

Edelweiss2020 · 04/04/2021 08:28

I've bought 4 20ish size packs of different brands in size 1 to start with to see which ones work best for us - also a FTM. Figured that was easier than potentially running out in the early days! As you say, you can always donate them if you don't use them :)

Soubriquet · 04/04/2021 08:31

You’ll be surprised at how many nappies you will go through

You will probably use all those up and might even need to buy another pack!

orangejuicer · 04/04/2021 08:33

They won't go to waste. Welcome to FTM mode - it's fun but you may lose your mind temporarily Grin

Ajahd · 04/04/2021 08:33

I bought 2 packs of size 1s which didn't get touched as my boy was a big boy as it was (8lbs 11oz) and he was in NICU for 10 days when he was born. He wore their size 1s for a few days and then size 2s by the time he came home.

Worst case scenario, just donate them if you don't need them :)

FamilyAreEverything · 04/04/2021 08:40

You might be fine with that many. We had a tiny one in size 0 for six weeks.
If you still have the receipts then you might be able to exchange full packs. I’ve done this before when I’d over bought one size when they were on offer which was followed by a sudden growth spurt. Or donate them. Or difficult in current circumstances, but I’ve passed on open packets to other mums in baby groups.

I've got 5 70pk & a 24pk of size 1. Will get size 2 next and some size 3. Any unopened we don't need I'll save as BIL and his wife are ttc.
Ours have all fit size one initially, ranged from 7lb 7oz - 10lb 12oz in birth weight. They all lost a fair amount of weight before starting to gain again.

lilroo87 · 04/04/2021 08:46

I'm a first time mum aswell, due end of July and I've only got 3 packs of size 1's and my mum sent w couple of packs of size 2's.
I was going to buy more but I've decided to leave it at what I have and DH has said he'll go and get some more once she's born so we don't get too many x

Chelyanne · 04/04/2021 08:46

This is baby 6 but I may be overestimating how many we need as we had twins last time Hmm

moochingtothepub · 04/04/2021 09:14

I perhaps used 10 in total (small baby) but they have these things called supermarkets now, contrary to what you might read on Mumsnet, you can go shopping after having a baby - I went in the way back from the hospital (to buy preemie sized clothes!)

LadyBillyBon · 04/04/2021 09:41

All packs have different weights so please check. Tesco size 1 newborns only go up to 5lbs

FTEngineerM · 04/04/2021 09:45

We were changing 15-17 times a day in the first few weeks so 5 x 24 = 120, 120/15= 8 days worth of nappies Smile not excessive. Unless you have a mahoosive baby.

I've never noticed this... The asda size ones we have are up to 11lb, they fit our big lad at 10lb 12oz.
Chelyanne · 04/04/2021 09:57

He did lose over a pound initially but once he started to gain again climbed the sizes pretty quickly. All ours have been in size 6 by a year old.

LadyBillyBon · 04/04/2021 10:08

I didn't notice until I went to add them to my bag and looked at the size on the packet! Turns out Tesco do like 4 different 'newborn' sizes.
Where as asda and sainsbury's ect go from around 5lbs to 11

Mhc19 · 04/04/2021 16:22

We were expecting a big baby, at least 8lb. She was a 5lber. Since then, I always recommend taking a pack of size zeros to the hospital. They're cheap enough and if you don't use them, you can donate them to the hospital.

charcb · 05/04/2021 08:02

Thanks ladies! From your posts it seems to me it's hard to predict how many / what size you'll need until baby is here so we will go with what we have and do a shopping trip if baby grows a lot during our stay in hospital and the size 1 nappies turn out to be too small!

Some of you mentioned size 0 but I couldn't see these in the supermarket? I went explicitly to Aldi to get their nappies (we always shop at Tesco) as I read here they're good quality.

You can easily be changing nappy 10 times a day at the start so that lot might only do you two weeks! It's amazing how quickly you go through them...

We started with size 2 of the Aldi mamia ones, and size 1 of pampers. That fitted our baby well (almost 8 pounds at birth). You'll notice that the different nappy sizes have a big overlap in baby weights so I think you'll be fine. Also baby won't mind a slightly tight nappy for a few days if required.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 05/04/2021 08:16

I would just stick with what you have and buy as you need them once you know baby's size. Strangely both of mine were in newborn for a while, in size 2 and 3 for a very short time and size 4 forever!

We could only get size 0 in pampers, but I think some supermarket own brands now make size 0. We’ve only ever used pampers (sensitive skin that didn’t get on with anything else sadly).
BertieBotts · 05/04/2021 10:41

Yeah, the weights are only approximate. My 2yo has a big bum so even though he could technically fit into size 4 or 5 weight wise and doesn't meet the minimum weight for size 6, size 5 and 6 fit him best.

BertieBotts · 05/04/2021 10:42

I wouldn't bother with size 0 unless your baby is premature, in which case you'll be in hospital for a while so plenty of time to send someone to find size 0.

FlashesOfRage · 05/04/2021 10:46

My twins were 7lbs1 and 6lbs8 at 37 weeks. We were in pampers size 0 for nearly 4 weeks!

Plan for ten changes per day plus a few for poonamis and getting used to using them!

Chelyanne · 05/04/2021 10:53

@charcb tesco and asda do their own brand in a size 0, pampers also do them. They are for very small babies though so I wouldn't get any unless you know you will deliver early due to complications.

1990shopefulftm · 05/04/2021 10:57

He was an almost 10lber so had to go straight to size 2s, I d stick with what you ve got for size 1 for now and get a pack of 2s
