What toiletries does baby need?

Hi, I’m 33 weeks pregnant (first baby to get this far) and sorting out stuff for baby as well as my hospital bag. What toiletries would you say are essential and what would you advise buying? Also what is maybe not essential but you wouldn’t go without?
Thank you in advance! Flowers

Water. Cotton pads. That's it. They won't need full body bathing for a while yet so just a soft towel, cotton pads and water. And air. Airing their bits out is the first port of call to preventing nappy rash.

DS is 3 months and I think we only really have Child’s Farm baby wash. I didn’t pack in my hospital bag though as we didn’t bathe him for ages.

We use coconut oil instead of any moisturiser etc. Now it’s getting sunnier, I’ve also bought some SPF50 but that’s as a triple protection from being covered and in the shade.

Peanutkitten · 03/04/2021 14:55

High water content wet wipes for convenience (in change bag), cotton wool balls/pads for topping and tailing each day, simple massage oil (I use almond oil) that can be used on cradle cap too, soft sponge for bath time, and I’ve got a cuddledry robe tho not used it yet! I’ve not really used soap just tend to use water, with the odd tiny squirt of bubble bath or a Cereve cleanser if we feel like it.
Toiletries for mummy.... that’s a diff story tho!! Smile
Congratulations!

The advice is for the first few weeks to only bath them in water and then when mine were a little older I used dove baby soap and some of the Johnson’s night time stuff in the hope it would help with sleep! I also had dove baby body lotion that I use when their skin gets dry. A baby flannel or sponge is also useful.
I’d buy sudocrem and bepanthem as I found both quite useful.
I can’t really think of any other toiletries I needed.

FudgeSundae · 03/04/2021 14:59

I never got to grips with cotton pads. We use water wipes. They don’t need much else regularly when they’re small but it’s good to have sudocrem and metanium in the house for nappy rash, child’s farm moisturiser for rashes or dry skin (we used their shampoo/body wash too from 2 months) and not forgetting calpol for first jabs.

Notanotherhun · 03/04/2021 15:01

Be careful with wipes, even if "baby friendly" they can seriously irritate newborn skin. Hence cotton pads and water.

Popskipiekin · 03/04/2021 15:06

Can’t think of toiletries so much but it’s good to stock up your basic first aid so you’re not desperate if minor illnesses happen at night.
So I’d recommend metanium for when nappy rash gets very bad (it can do if baby gets a tummy bug or mine used to get it after their jabs).
Saline spray/drops for if they get a bunged up nose. Maybe one of those nose frieda sucky things.
A good in-ear thermometer and spare hygiene caps.
Calpol in the house to use after they’re 8 weeks old (I was even told to give age 6 weeks by health care professional following a tongue tie snip).
Congratulations!

For the first six weeks all we used was:

  • Cotton pads - we'd do nappy changes with this and tepid/warm water.
  • Olive oil - DD got very dry peely skin a lot and cradle cap and olive oil helps this. Would gently rub it on with cotton pads.
That's it.

Post-6 weeks we started using disposable baby wipes for bowel movements, as well as baby shampoo and baby bath/shower stuff for baths/showers. We just used Superdrug own brand stuff for the washes and baby wipes we would mostly use supermarket own brands or Huggies.

Other toiletries I'd reccomend having in case you need them: Sudocrem, Metanium, a basic plain moisturiser, bubble bath, Vaseline, baby-friendly sun cream depending on time of year.

Notanotherhun · 03/04/2021 15:13

Baby safe nails scissors. Don't use adult clippers and then take a sliver of finger off. Blush

Fispi · 03/04/2021 15:53

Water wipes or better yet cut up flannels and plain water, store in a Tupperware box and wet as needed (you can get pre cut cheeky wipes but they are essentially flannels). Soak in chamomile tea for nappy rash. Brilliant later when teething! Cotton wool is a fiddly pain. Didnt bother with any bubble bath till about 1 year old. Olive oil or coconut oil for dry patches and scalp if needed as PPs have said. A soft brush. Bamboo towels are super soft and my 3 year old still loves her hooded duck towel.

Not toiletries but still:
Metanium or bepanthen in case of nappy rash. Calpol and ibuprofen for teething and jabs. Infra red thermometer.

For you:
Tooth brush & tooth paste, hair brush, deoderant, body wash. Anything else you feel you need. I'll take in some basic skin care and make up in case I stay in again but it's very much not essential. I just want to look better in the photos this time Grin

I'm having my 3rd baby in May and I've still got unopened bottles of baby oil, shampoo etc left over from my last baby 2 years ago, so I'd say go light on what you get.

In my hospital bag I'm taking a baby hair brush (I tend to make hairy babies) and some cotton wool.

For home I have a bottle of top to toe wash, massage oil and a soft flannel.

PerspicaciousGreen · 04/04/2021 09:49

Wipes (we do Aldi unscented sensitive) and sudocrem. Our eldest is nearly three and we still only use products on him if he's really filthy. They only need water - no soap, no talc, no shampoo, no moisturisers.

Worriesome · 04/04/2021 13:22

For baby? Or you? For baby cotton pads and water is all you need. Some baby wipes non scented ones. In the hospital I used cotton pads and water and even for a while once I was home but after that we used baby wipes non scented x

Chelyanne · 04/04/2021 13:55

I just use wet wipes, cotton wool and water was a pain.
Any nappy cream, most supermarkets do ones similar to the big brand names. Nappy free time on some puppy pads/towel/blankets is really good for them too.
A sensitive baby top to toe wash, I like the asda little angels range. Only needed at home, hospital will provide if they want you to bath them there. The hooded towels are great for babies so have a few of those.
Moisturiser go for ones with natural ingredients and no added fragrance.
Sun cream, I like nivea and use it for the whole family. I only use factor 30 and keep young ones shaded most of the time to avoid sunburn.

Pinktruffle · 04/04/2021 17:15

I would get some kind of nappy rash cream, I was told to use it for prevention rather than treatment and my LO's 4 month old bottom is in perfect condition. Once he was 6 weeks, I started using Child's Farm wash. My LO has very dry skin (I have eczema, praying he won't have my skin type) and have been us8ng Aveeno baby moisturiser on him (he is now 4 months). I tried coconut oil and it didn't help, made his dry skin worse infact. I spoke to my friend who is a peadiatric nurse in a NICU and she said to stick to creams, oils are occlusive but not really moisturising.

Best of luck!

MindyStClaire · 04/04/2021 17:25

All I'd bring to hospital would be wipes (I much prefer the Huggies pure ones to the water wipes) and bepanthem or similar as a barrier cream is useful. Have some metanium at home for any nappy rash.

We didn't use any bubble bath or anything but found DD1 in particular needed a little baby shampoo from quite a young age. Easy to pick up in the supermarket later though.

Giraffaelina · 04/04/2021 17:41

For hospital: Wipes, Sudocrem, nappies and nappy bags.

We were given Burt's Bees & Childs Farm bath products & lotions as a gift but couldn't actually use them until DS was 10 months old as he had very sensitive skin with eczema so only used prescription bathing products and lotions for ages. So I definitely wouldn't recommend investing a lot in toiletries until you know what will be good for baby. Now we use Aveeno products as that's the only thing that agrees with DS's skin.
Coconut oil was good for preventing cradle cap and my "not necessary but wouldn't go without" products are Pampers Premium nappies and Water Wipes. They are pricey but I'd never swap they work incredibly well for us. I am not at all saying that other brands aren't good, I just never risked swapping them. Also Shnuggle baby bath. Best thing ever, we loved it so much, now upgrades to the toddler bath :)

Good luck Thanks

Lansinoh nipple cream for you

LittleTiger007 · 05/04/2021 11:13

Thank you so much ladies! Water and wipes/cotton balls seems to be the mainstay at first. We are going with little lamb cotton nappies and wipes and I have a pot of coconut oil at the ready. I’ll take it from there! For me it’s different! Nipple cream and ice packs are packed for starters!
