Would walking make SPD worse?

I'm nearly 28 weeks now, I have been rather inactive the last few months :( hoping in the next week to start going on short walks again, but I can feel spd pain starting again :( would it be better for me to walk through the pain or just rest?

I was told re spd if something hurts then i shouldn't be doing it

I've been finding that walking on softer surfaces has been ok, so through woods etc if you live near them. I'd been in lots of pain after walking previously but earlier this week I wore a back support band, walked through the woods and then when I got back I used a hot water bottle on my lower back. I'll definitely be trying it again as it felt much better. I got a hot water bottle on Amazon that I could tie loosely around my waist.

I also sleep with a pillow under my hips and another under my feet, and another between my knees. So many pillows but a massive improvement overall. I hope it gets better for you. Have you spoken to your midwife for a physiotherapist referral?

Walking for me makes it so much worse.
The advice for it is to do as little as possible

Daffodil21 · 03/04/2021 12:38

Sorry I should add that the above was not medical advice given to me. I'm currently waiting for a referral and in the meantime I wanted to try and see if I could manage walking. The above has worked for me so far but I should also point out mine may be scoliosis related and not actually SPD

Just rest is the advice I always had; walking just makes it hurt more. Having said that sitting in one place for too long also made it worse so I found getting up to walk to the toilet etc or kitchen at work helped it not get too bad.

Fispi · 03/04/2021 16:25

Walk but not so as it makes the pain significantly worse was the advice from physio for me. A decent support belt helps enormously, as does heat. Sleep with a pillow between knees and rolled up hand towel under bump. Reduces the strain on your back and pelvis.

Mamamamasaurus · 03/04/2021 16:33

Rest. All the way. Exercise, I was told, was the worst thing.

Get a good support band / belt, don't move anything with one leg (boxes etc), as few movements as possible which mean opening your legs (I know, I know!) and do the pensioner shuffle up and down stairs (one step at a time, both feet on one step before the next one, if that makes sense)

My SPD was bad with DC1, with DC2 I could barely walk but had a toddler so ploughed on. I'm still suffering about DC2 is almost 5.

Sadly SPD is worse when you exercise.

Trying to keep active is important, especially mentally but I find if I move around or go for a long walk I need to lay in the bath/have hot water bottles/take codeine afterwards.

It sucks and I empathise. :(

Walking the dog aggravates my spd, it's the jolty type movement so I have to walk slower than pre-pregnancy.
Lifting weights in the gym makes it feel better, all the supporting muscles get lazy when I don't lift. It's the same case with my osteoarthritis.

Chelyanne · 03/04/2021 17:28

Resting too much always makes it miles worse for me as I get sooo stiff. I was the same when I had it in 3 other pregnancies, especially last time with huge twins.

Opticabbage · 03/04/2021 17:45

I have this dilemma as I have horrible SPD but am also putting on weight too quickly by staying so stationary. Physio said to buy a belt and walk, so I have been, and actually it's not making things worse like I expected.

bsquared · 03/04/2021 17:53

I had a few successes with SPD quite late in my pregnancy. An osteopath seemed to solve it just before labour. I have no idea what they did. Sitting on a Swiss ball used to relieve it a bit as well.

When I finally got a referral from the midwife, to group physio, their advice was that swimming and yoga were not good for SPD (... which were the two forms of exercise I had kept returning to). Otherwise, there was just a suggestion that you do pelvic floor exercises ...

This time round, I am doing 1:1 pilates, which is expensive but is also managing it: lots of pelvic floor curls, roll downs from the wall, hip flexor exercises, box stretches, rolling my bum around on top of a pilates ball - this all seems to make a difference (I don’t really understand how, but it does).

Good luck! I hope you start to feel better soon.

RandomMess · 03/04/2021 18:06

The treatment for SPD is rest rest rest, no walking, no lifting, no stairs.

Ice packs and pain relief help too.

blindmansbluff · 03/04/2021 18:20

I found both walking and resting for too long made it worse! I would try some gentle walking and see how you get on

cantthinkofaname2021 · 03/04/2021 22:09

Thank you so much for all the advice, I have my next midwife appointment on Thursday so will tell her then, last pregnancy I never mentioned it to them and just thought it was normal BlushBlush
I really miss the gym Sad I also fear by being stationary I'm gaining weight too quickly, I didn't want to gain much more as I felt so terrible first trimester I couldn't move around much either & gained the most then
Weirdly today it was very painful until about 2pm then I felt much better, then around 7pm went on a half hour car journey & following that it's come back again abit :( so I'm torn about trying to move more or rest, when I rest I go stiff! I'm also moving house in 2 weeks in agony up and down off the floor with boxes and chasing a boisterous toddler
Will follow all advice thank you and try the pillow and towel in bed tonight x
