Terrified of an ectopic

Hello,

I found out I'm pregnant on Monday after 18 months of trying (I have PCOS) I'm only 1-2 weeks so very early - but think it's classed as 4 weeks?

I am now absolutely petrified of it being an ectopic pregnancy and every twinge and cramp is really playing with my health anxiety. Iv had mild cramps on my left hand side but they're about as mild as can be.

What signs and symptoms do I need to look out for and how common is it? Would I also have some symptoms by now?
Is there any risk factors for it?

I'm trying to be happy about it as it's my first but I'm so so scared of something rupturing and I'm hospitalised and worse.

Thanks in advance

From a very worried newbie Confused

Is there any reason you’re so worried about an ectopic specifically? When I had an ectopic I had severe pain in my right side, all around my middle, I had some fresh bleeding & felt so nauseous. This isn’t typical ectopic signs so I didn’t have an official diagnosis until bloods & scans were carried out. I was constantly asked if I had shoulder tip pain so I believe that’s one of the main symptoms. If you feel especially anxious about an ectopic I would suggest getting a private scan & they can ensure that the pregnancy is in the right place.

Congratulations on your pregnancy Flowers

Hi, congrats on your pregnancy! Since all the questions you've asked will be factually answered on the NHS website, I'm assuming you're looking for reassurance? Ectopic are not common and there is absolutely no reason to suppose you are at risk, unless there's info you haven't shared here. In any case you wouldn't get symptoms probably until around 6 weeks (NB your pregnancy is dated from your last LMP so if, as you say, you are 1-2 weeks from conception then you are officially 3-4 weeks I'd guess).

I've had an ectopic BTW x

Try not to worry, cramping is pretty common in a healthy pregnancy. Like pp said you could go with an early scan to check the location but do be aware that early scans are not always as reassuring as you'd hope, especially if dates could be out so try to hold out to around 8wk at least.

There's no specific reason why I think i could be having one it's just purely my health anxiety playing on my mind, and the one left sided niggle. It hurt this morning when I went to the toilet at first and has been niggly all day but it's so mild. I have a very overactive imagination and I always think the worst which I know is not healthy.

Thank you for your comment. It has put my mind at ease a bit 😊

Thank you, I have thought of an early scan but because I have PCOS and my cycles are soo long my last period was 7 weeks ago and I know I'm definitely not that far.

I'm hoping the midwife may send me for an early scan anyway to get a proper date but she hasn't rang yet so I'm awaiting that 😊

Thank you,

I think it's cus Iv read so many stories of a simple niggle on one side actually being an ectopic that I'm so sensitive to every ache and niggle.

I don't believe I am at any higher risk, I'm just so happy to be pregnant after thinking I would never conceive that I'm so scared of anything happening

I know I need to try and chill a bit though.

I'm sorry about your ectopic ☹️

@lmb89xoxo niggles & cramps are totally normal! I had a lot of cramping & niggling early on with my second pregnancy & I’m now wrestling a 7 month old into pyjamas 😂 but if you really need the reassurance book an early scan, it won’t reassure you in terms of miscarriage at this stage as they probably won’t see a heartbeat or anything as you’re too early but they can at least tell you if it’s in the correct place.

SnooperTrooper12345 · 02/04/2021 19:29

They don't tend to send you for an early scan even if you're not sure on dates.
They stick to the usual going by LMP and then wait until your 12 week scan to date you.

You'd have to book a private one yourself I'm afraid.

Might be worth it to ease your mind though! ❤️

Namechange1991x · 02/04/2021 19:46

I had an ectopic and it went on for 9.5 weeks and was missed by the hospital and I had to have surgery and my tube removed.
However, my HCG levels were rising abnormally, but I don't think they routinely test them.
Do you have any risk factors that are making you worried it may be an ectopic?

Drowninginwashing · 02/04/2021 19:51

@lmb89xoxo it's OK, I was fine and I went on to have two kids with no issues. So it's not always as bad as you hear about, although of course it isn't something to he taken lightly.

Keep an eye on the side niggle and phone your epau if worried, but honestly it could be anything - implantation, ligaments, luteal cyst... I'm sure you'll be fine! Good luck x

Alonelonelyloner · 03/04/2021 10:38

The side pain is most probably Corpus Luteum pain. I have had it every pregnancy (11!).
I've also had an ectopic. Please try not to worry.

Sunflowerx · 03/04/2021 12:55

I found out I was pregnant very early at 3+4 and was exactly the same, every tiny little pain I had I was convinced it was because the baby was in the wrong place. The only thing that stopped my worry was booking a private scan which i had at 8 weeks and after seeing the baby on the screen I actually began to feel the excitement I'd been waiting for! I'm 13 weeks now :)
