14 weeks pregnant and nausea has returned with a vengeance. I'm hoping it is just that but after throwing up last night [first time in pregnancy] suddenly got paranoid about consuming coleslaw in a farm cafe about a week ago. Didn't realise that was yet another thing couldn't eat though not makes sense. And not thinking I am feeling unwell because of that and dreaded listeria? My doc thinks I'm so paranoid I'm sure they'll brush it off. What does anyone think?

Pretty sure its salmonella you get from eating mayo (raw eggs) not listeria which is found in mould ripened cheeses! Either way its v. unlikely that the coleslaw was made from raw egg and was a lot more likely from pasturised mayo which is fine. It would probably come on a lot quicker and you would prob have the runs, sweats etc. Id say its your hormones! (ps I work with food so not just talking crap!!)

Listeria is very rare from my understanding of it. In some countries such as France pregnant women routinely eat all the things we are told not to here such as soft cheeses etc. If you don't want to ask your doc or midwife ring NHS Direct for advice, or perhaps look on their website - they could also tell you how likely it is that your symptoms wouldn't occur until a week later.
If the hygiene levels are reasonable in the cafe then it is even more unlikely (I would guess that you wouldn't have eaten any food there unnless it looked reasonably clean and hygienic)

It's not just the potential risk of raw eggs in the mayo, I think the guidance applies to all sorts of ready prepared salads (bags of lettuce, potato salad, and coleslaw etc) - I think it is precautionary in case these things haven't been washed or haven't been stored correctly (i.e. below 5 degrees). It is still very unlikely that you have contracted anything from it, be it salmonella, listeria or anything else.
The guidance varies from country to country and depending on what books and leaflets you read here. Personally I was careful about food hygiene and tried not to panic if I inadvertently ate something that was possibly not recommended. (like prawns).

yes it was raw root vegetables/listeria risk i was worried about, ie contact with soil. I am too embarrassed to ring doc as in my last pregnancy i was so worried about everything, but am wondering why my sickness has returned and i feel so rubbish. Aaaargh.

p.s. forgot to say hope you feel better soon with the nausea and sickness.
I had quite bad sickness throughout and even when I thought it had stopped I still had the odd random bout of throwing up, so this is probably (as mumbear says) your hormones. I know it is easy to say but try and distract yourself - if you have got some sort of bug you will quickly realise as the vomiting will get worse and probably other symptoms too. But if you worry about it all night you will feel nauseous from the anxiety.

just had never thrown up before in pregnancy was bit of a shock! Last time and this time bad nausea but no throwing up until last night when i thought it was getting better.

listeria does not make you vomit
it gives you a temperature and achey fluey-like symptoms

you will be fine

TotalChaos · 10/11/2007 22:17

I agree with Mrs Badger. That it would be more fluey type symptoms than vomitting anyway. Listeria is very rare. Btw whenever I was still vomiting on and off up to 20 weeks, I would think the m/s had finished but it would crop up every so often.

thanks mrs B and TC. You're probably right. Just such a surprise to feel so rubbish suddenly. Threw up in Waitrose today. At least i made it to the loo!
