Didn't hurt as much as everyone said it would, they didn't give me any drugs, they monitored before and after with CTG and during with ultrasound. Didn't work though, baby totally determined not to move, so wasn't prolonged effort.

Would definitely recommend one unless you are happy with planning a section in which case don't bother. Even though fairly uncomfortable is definitely worth a go if you're keen to avoid a section. Risks really minimal as far as my research came up with.

I just thought sod it and started my mat leave that afternoon but could have worked easily. No bruising (but as I say, LO wasn't playing ball so was a fairly short-lived struggle!).

All I would advise is to breathe deeply throughout to keep your muscles relaxed - it's uncomfy but not the excruciating agony some folk would have you think.

Also, if it doesn't work and you go for a section in the end, don't worry too much. I was totally anti-section and dreaded it, but really in the scheme of things it was no big thing. Ask loads of questions! And good luck!

Mine didn't work & was extremely painful! Everytime they moved him a bit he just moved straight back!

I did feel bruised afterwards but this didn't last long. My consultant still encouraged me to go for a natural birth but once I was in labour the consultant at the time wouldn't allow me too!

I had one at 39 weeks and found it extremely painful. They did manage to turn her though, but I wouldn't have one ever again personally.

interesting, does that mean you would rather have a c section then ?? or would you still go vaginal breech birth ??

I declined an ECV after finding an indpendent midwife happy to support me that had a lot of experience of vaginal breech birth (who also didn't think an ECV would be successfull). DD was born at home as a footling breech, and I'd do the same again tomorrow

NAB3littlemonkeys · 10/11/2007 18:38

I had one with number 3 and would never have one again unless in hospital.

I have said about this before, we booked an independant m/w and she visited when I was 31 weeks. The baby had been lying across me for a while and she asked to feel him. Before I knew she moved him. I felt lousy for the rest of the day, even though it worked. When I saw my NHS midwife she was furious. They shouldn't be done unless in hospital and with my history it was far too risky. She was going to get a right telling off!

Tangle · 10/11/2007 20:25

Just realised that what I've written could have implied the midwife would have done the ECV. That wasn't the case at all - she also now feels strongly that they should only be performed in hospital with a theatre prepped, just in case (in fact I understood that midwives now weren't allowed to do them). However, she did do them earlier in her career and has felt a lot of breech babies so DH and I put a fair amount of weight on her opinion when deciding whether or not to have the ECV. Sorry if I confused

Rachee · 12/11/2007 14:11

Had my ECV this morning and it was an out an dout sucsess......

Baby now head down, Wasn't painful, just for 30 seconds whilest she scooped the baby's bum out of my pelvis.....
But i did do the bum in air thing for 40 mins whilest waiting to be seen....
Doc was well chuffed with the outcome and from now on she is going to recommend that anyone waiting does the bum in air thing as baby popped out of pelvis really easily.
Plus i have to say i did consentrate on relaxing all my muscles whilest she did it....
So thumbs up, and would deff do one again !! No probs.

Glad it went well.... had one for ds2 and it worked for me too - was really glad to avoid a CS and wouldn't have been brave enough to try a breech birth...

Rachee · 12/11/2007 17:46

same here..... here's hoping it doesn't turn back !!! LOL
