Hello
A quick one, I have a section booked for the 11 May.
I haven't been given the time and only told that I will be given the time the day before.

Just wanted to know if you had a section, when were you given the time for the op? Or is that just a case of going in the morning and waiting for a slot until all the emergencies are dealt with? Also does the hospital cancel it at the last minute?

TIA!

I had a planned c section last Monday, they phoned to do an over the phone pre op consultation the Friday before and I asked where I was on the list. Was told 2nd which would be 11am but if there was any emergencies it could pushed back or if the woman in front went into labour before the day I'd be moved up. I was taken at 11.30

It all depends on how many people they've got in and how many emergencies ect they've done. As they'll fit you all around that. Obviously they can't predict that right now.

I was first on the list for both of mine. Had to be at the hospital for 6am. On arrival I was checked in, observations were done, chat with doctor then anaesthetist, get changed into gown and stockings, spend half an hour on the monitor. First one was delayed due to emergencies and I didn’t get to theatre until 10am. No delays with the second and baby was out by 7.30am.

I was never given a time slot but was 3rd on the list of elcs. We turned up at 7am, they said they were struggling to find a 2nd surgeon so were unsure of times. Hubby went off to get a brew on crutches as he had a broken leg, sods law while he was gone they came back to me and said they'd found someone. Gave me 5 mins to get ready to go, dh wasn't answering phone as he couldn't but thankfully made it back in time and our girls were delivered at 10:30&31.

I wore my own nightie at mine, no gown given.

ShyTown if baby was out by 7.30, do you remember when you got out of theatre?

How long are you generally in theatre if all goes well?

@Hpdesktop No, they got him to surgery and in to scrubs before my spinal was in thankfully.

alexio · 01/04/2021 12:25

My 1st section I was in for about an hour. This time I was in for about 2 hours or so from getting the spinal to going to recovery, this time took longer as they had scar tissue to get through and baby was up high so had a bit of difficulty getting him out.

Hpdesktop · 01/04/2021 12:30

Ah great Chelyanne glad he made it!
Thanks Alexio, that's super helpful and hoping for the same for me too.

The time is kind of meaningless with a planned section as they push you back for the emergency ones. Just expect to be there for a while before you go in.

Hpdesktop · 01/04/2021 13:20

Oh yes def MySocalledLoaf as I have had two emergency sections myself, one of which my husband completely missed! I need to arrange childcare for my two children and have never had a planned sections so need to work on some rough timescale as I am not sure how it works.

I was supposed to have planned sections with my other two children but didn't work out that way as had them earlier than planned with the emergencies.

I've not had a C-section myself, but I'm part of the theatre team that does them.

At my trust, we have a separate theatre to do the elective list, so you won't get bumped by emergencies. You get told to come in either for the AM or the PM, and usually (unless you're first) have to wait around a few hours. We can't be any more specific than that.

Cancellations are rare, and only when we're running massively behind and the emergency theatres are too busy to take on the case(s) we can't do.

We expect a C-section to take about an hour operating time. Plus about 30 minutes for the spinal, cannulas, and waiting for the block to rise. Afterwards, we get you on a new bed, admire your new baby/babies, wave you off to recovery, and turn the theatre around ready for the next patient.

Thank you Dyra, very helpful.
I will look for a 24 hours nanny if I can to cover all possibilities.

Sections are given on a risk basis, so high risk will be first thing etc. You will likely get bumped down the list depending on emergencies and sometimes they can cancelled if there are a lot of emergencies.
