Bicornuate uterus (mentions MC)

TW: mentions MC

I recently just found out I have had my 3rd MC and have now been told I have a bicornuate uterus.

Like most people I have dug myself into a rabbit hole of horror stories and I'm now worried that I'll never be able to carry a baby and if I ever do then the labour will be difficult or baby will be born with birth defects.

Has anyone got a bicornuate uterus and can tell me their experiences?

They thought I had a bicornuate uterus but it turned out to be a huge cyst on my ovary that was bending my uterus out of shape

I do recall though that people do still get pregnant and have babies with a bicornuate uterus

How pronounced is yours? Some are love heart shape others look like two horns /uterus split into two almost?

I’m so sorry for your loss op.

Idon’t have any personal experience of this but a very close friend of mine has one and has had a baby with no complications. They also realised that hers was very almost in complete half so her baby only had the space of half of her uterus. Despite worries that she’d go into early labour, she didn’t, and actually ended up going over! He was small at birth but not too small. He spent a little time in NICU and was a little bit poorly at birth but very quickly recovered. Mum had a vaginal birth. He’s over 1 now and a very healthy, happy little boy meeting all his milestones, and they’re trying for baby no.2!

Good luck op. I wish you all the best on your journey and really, really hope your next pregnancy is successful.

I don't have one (I don't have a womb) however I'm the result of one. My DM had one and here I am along with a younger DB. She also had a number of gynae issues and was told she couldn't have children and again here we are. For context I am nearly 40 so I'm guessing medicine has also improved vastly in this time.

Hi- I have a bicornuate uterus. I had quite a lot of difficulty conceiving and then I had 2 very early MCs before I found out about it.
There’s quite a lot of difference in how extreme it can be. Mine is definitely heart shaped but I don’t have what they call a ‘septum’ in the middle.

I also felt very hopeless when I found out but none of my doctors seemed overly concerned and reassured me that it was still possible to have a kid. I got pregnant again and my son was born in Jan of 2020. I had one or two extra scans and had to get checked to see if I needed a cervical stitch (I didn’t) but otherwise there was no issue caused by my uterus. He had a straightforward birth and is a healthy boy. When I first found out about it I read a lot of stories about women who didn’t even know about their uterus being a weird shape until after they had kids.

It’s a scary thing to find out about yourself OP but it can work out. Flowers

Wishing you all the best.

My SIL has a bicornuate uterus and was told she would probably find it difficult to conceive and had a higher chance of miscarriage if she did become pregnant. Hers is completely split in two.
It did take her a while to conceive but no more than a lot of people and initially she was consultant led but in the end they discharged her to normal midwife led care. The baby developed absolutely perfectly and weighed over 7 pounds and delivered by elective c section.
I think she felt the same as you do before she got pregnant. I hope everything works out for you too.

I have two healthy DC with my heart shaped uterus. My first DC spent the second half of pregnancy scrunched up on one side. Made for an extremely weird bump but she was ok. Second DC had a very unstable lie and was transverse with a prolapsed arm at birth. I don't think he had the space to turn. Both were emergency CS births but otherwise uneventful pregnancies.

keeponrunning85 · 03/04/2021 09:07

So sorry to hear about your miscarriages. I had 4 miscarriages and was told I had a bicornuate uterus when scanned by EPAU with my first miscarriage. After my second my consultant did a 3D ultrasound which showed it was partially bicornuate with a septum. After my fourth miscarriage I had surgery and she removed as much of the septum as possible. I've since had 2 successful pregnancies, both conceived within a month or two of trying when it took several months all the previous times.

My successful pregnancies went fine but my DD was transverse and DS was breech so I had sections with both.

Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

@custardbear funny you mention as cyst as I have a large cyst on my left ovary. It's the only time I've had a cyst this big and it's the first time I've been told I have a bicornucate uterus. I have never been told it at any other US or an MRI I had which I found strange as surely it would have been seen

They never told me how much it was split I just saw it on the screen and it looked like a little dip in the middle but it was difficult to know what I was looking at. Maybe I'll call them and ask for peace of mind

Thank you all for your replies. You have all filled me with so much hope.

I felt really down after finding out about my uterus. I wasn't given much information from the doctor apart from that it is common however reading online it doesn't seem that common.

I'm so glad I posted this thread as it's made me feel like this isn't the end, it may be a difficult journey but I will get there. You're all amazing. I hope this thread brings others some comfort that everything will be okay!

Thank you all so much and I wish you all the absolute best 💕

@canitbesimple - have you had cysts removed before? Mine looked quite big (1st early scan as bleeding), foetus was ok then, it's that first scan when she said I had a bicornuate uterus, i then had a MMC when they scanned me two weeks later 😞. The cyst was measuring about 10cm. Had third scan 2 weeks later to see if MMC had passed, and saw a different sonographer scanned me and she found it was enormous! Causing the uterus problem. Had surgery and bicornuate went.
Perhaps ask your consultant if they can check the cyst doesn't go higher and further than it looks
Good luck with everything 💕

I do, I found out after a MMC.
I was very worried but conceived again very quickly and had a huge baby (now 14!) who was so late he was induced.
It’s perfectly possible to carry a healthy baby with a BU. Good luck OP.

No thankfully I haven't had to get any removed as they've always resolved on their own. I had an early scan due to bleeding too which they found the cyst and no bubs.

The cyst I have was about 4cm last month and is a hemorrhagic cyst which they seen was leaking blood into my tubes. I've been told to wait a few months to see if it has burst and is slowly resolving or if it is getting bigger and I need to go back in to have it removed. My early scan was private and they never mentioned my bicornuate uterus before but then when I seen the hospital they said it was split. I've had so many appointments before (eg previous scans, MRI, IUD appointments for issues with my IUD) and never been told that my uterus was split until I went to the hospital after my early scan. Very confused how it has been missed so many times 😩

I think I have to wait 3 months before I have an appointment to review my cyst. They said they'll only remove if it gets to 5cm

@canitbesimple I'm sorry for your losses. I recently found out I've got a bicornuate uterus, all the sonographer said was that it was heart shaped so I don't know how severe or not it is. I've had about 4 chemical pregnancies but have been told they're unrelated, not been given any other reason for them apart from bad luck.

Just wanted to say thank you for this thread. I haven't been able to find much info from others personal experiences so this is really reassuring to read.

clarrylove · 04/04/2021 22:23

I found out I have a bicornuate uterus 18 months ago at the age of 46. I have 2 children and had multiple scans so no idea why it wasn't detected before. I had also suffered 2 early miscarriages but put that down to one of those things.

vintagenurse · 04/04/2021 22:29

Hi, I have a bicornuate uterus. I think it is more the heart shaped defect. I also have 2 cervix and 1 kidney, all similar mullerian tube defects.

I got pregnant twice easily. Baby one was born at 36 weeks weighing 6lb2. Baby two was born at 35 weeks, although waters broke at 33 weeks, he weighed 7lb 4. Baby one was breech which is common, had caesareans both times.

Bizawit · 04/04/2021 22:41

So sorry for your losses OP. Flowers My friend has a bicornuate uterus. She did have a couple of early miscarriages and an ectopic sadly, but then she conceived her lovely son. He is now a gorgeous, strapping toddler . It may be a slightly longer road OP but you will get there ❤️❤️

Hi. I found out that I have a bicornuate uterus in my first pregnancy but the sonographer didnt say anything about what it could mean so I thought nothing of it. My baby was stillborn at 35 weeks and the following year I had 2 miscarriages but now I have a toddler. I was monitored by the consultant during my last pregnancy and had extra scans. I was booked in to be induced at 37 weeks due to my anxiety but I went into labour naturally the same day and he was here within two hours! It is absolutely possible to have a healthy baby but your journey is likely to be more difficult than the average woman’s I’m afraid. But so worth it in the end. I hope this post isn’t upsetting, but I am just being honest. When you do fall pregnant, insist on extra support if they don’t automatically offer it. Xx
