Big bleed at 14 weeks, any hope?

I'm 14+4 today, went to the loo as normal yesterday evening only to be greeted by a big rush of blood (not a single drop up until this point) enough to soak a panty liner. Phoned the labour ward who said go to A&E, I spent four hours there, came home at midnight and am expecting a call from EPAU today for a scan.
Still bleeding now, bright red, no clots or material. Has anyone had anything like this with a positive outcome? I can't help but think the worst.

I had a bleed with a clot at 14 weeks. Absolutely fine they never really found a reason. Try not to panic especially if you recently had your 12 weeks scan it's very unlikely anything has majorly changed that is putting baby at risk xx

I had something very similar at10 weeks with my second. Massive gush of blood, it was awful. I rushed to A&e because the bleeding was so bad but they basically said that they couldn't fit me in for a scan straight away and booked me in for one in 2 days time, a doctor said although the bleeding was very heavy she thought it would stop/wasn't a medical emergency. She also said she had never seen anyone have a bleed that heavy and have a happy outcome! She was wrong though. Although I continued to bleed on and off until the scan, the heartbeat was clear to see. They diagnosed a subdural hematoma. Like a pocket of bleeding in the uterus. Obviously this may not be your situation but I wanted to tell you mine. I understand how terrifying it is but until the scan no one can say for sure. Hang in there.

I had experienced something similar when I was 10 weeks. The amount of red blood was terrifying. No clots just a fish of fresh red blood. I remember being terrified as I had previously miscarried twice before. I went for an early scan and all was confirmed to be fine, i now have a lovely four year old dd. I never did get any answers to why it happened in the first place. Stay strong and good luck.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post. I had my 12 week scan on Friday so it's only been 5 days and everything was fine then. Can I ask how long your bleeds went on for? I think I'd feel better if it would just stop.

@PineappleSun I've never bled personally, but I home something called a subamniotic hematoma (where the bleed is inside the sac). These are very rare but when I was researching I found a lot out about subchorionic hematomas (bleeds outside the sac). There are lots and lots of stories on mumsnet about people having them and having very happy outcomes. If it is one then the bleeding can be quite severe and can last for weeks but again, even women who had such heavy bleeds they needed transfusions go on to have perfectly healthy babies.

Hope you get seen quickly and your scan goes well. I have my first growth scan since they discovered the hematoma today so understand the anxiety well! Thinking of you.

At my 12wk scan I had a huge bleed. When I got off the bed the Dr said "you're bleeding" I went to the toilet and passed a large clot. I thought it was over.

Went back in and she scanned again. Baby was fine, obviously I didn't feel very reassured as it was happening there and then, no warning and I'd not bled in pregnancies before.

She had me back 4 days later, by which point the red blood had changed to brown. Baby was fine, I had 2 subchrionic haematoma. The brown blood continued for a number of weeks.

I'm now 29+4. No sign of the haematoma at my 20wk scan.

Good luck

After the initial gush of red blood I wore a pad for a few days after.

Another one who had a massive bleed from a Sub-chorionic and a happy ending.

I had a huge gush of blood at around 11 weeks, and was convinced it was game over. Then bled on and off (sometimes brown, sometimes bright red) until I was about 20 weeks...

By 20 weeks, the SCH had healed and couldn't be seen on the scan.

Forgot to add, while you are bleeding, strictly NO sex, baths, swimming, heavy exercise

There was some research into bed rest vs light exercise, and the conclusion was very slightly in favour of light exercise so you can keep walking etc as normal.

There are also some docs who will give you extra progesterone if it is a big bleed, but I'm not sure if that is policy or just the preference of some

Thank you so much ladies, your stories are really helping. I've had my call from the EPAU who said to monitor it until lunchtime and then call and they will decide the next course of action. My DH has managed to book a private scan for later this morning for reassurance, I think he's as worried as I am.

Hey, I’m 16 weeks and have been bleeding for the last six as you describe on and off. I have a subchronic hematoma as mentioned above. Hope all works out for you at your scan x

Shannondd3108 · 31/03/2021 10:22

🤞🏻 Hope all goes well for you xx

PineappleSun · 31/03/2021 14:09

Thankfully everything was good at the scan, strong heartbeat, size correct to the day and they said there was no evidence of bleeding around the baby. Just about stopped bleeding now and the hospital just want me to keep an eye out. Almost stopped panicking and so grateful to all of you who posted and brought me back to hoping xx

For anyone else going through something like this and looking at old threads for reassurance, my healthy baby boy is 5 months old next week Smile. The bleed was never explained and was a complete one off.
