Thyroid function in pregnancy - normal?

Hi everyone, I have PCOS and am 11 weeks pregnant. I was advised by a private fertility specialist to get my thyroid checked so I asked my GP for this, had a blood test and called to get the results today.

They have marked it as normal - the result is TSH 0.78. Apparently between 0.35 - 4.96 is normal.

Is that ok? I don’t know a lot about thyroid but I thought people usually got two figures, but the receptionist at the GP said there is definitely only this figure.

Could anyone here who knows about thyroid possibly shed some light on this figure and let me know if I need to be worried or not?

Thank you!

When ordering bloods you can request just TSH or a TFT (thyroid function test) they can't do the TFT if you take carbamazepine or levothyroxine so would only do TSH. The other readings in the TFT are FT4 (likely the other reading you mentioned) and sometimes FT3 also. Usually you'd just order the TFT but there's really no benefit of those extra bloods unless the TSH is abnormal so I wouldn't worry that they haven't been done in your case if they're only checking your thyroid. If they're worried about a pituitary problem they need the FT4 reading but I would expect you to have symptoms of this and your specialist probably would have told you to specifically mention pituitary. Your TSH is in normal range so seemingly thyroid is fine and nothing to worry about. Hope that helps x

Ok thank you @LemonRizzle!

Do you think it matters that it’s at the lower end of the ‘normal’ range?

I have my 12 week scan on Thursday so I’m extra anxious this week xx

It's great that it's the lower end. If you go through ivf a lot of places will only do it if you are 2.5 or lower. Your thyroid function looks great

@glitterbugsparkles thank you, that is so good to know. Phew!

With pcos my hormones are all over the shop so I just assumed my thyroid was going to be bad too, especially after two losses.

Thank you for putting my mind at rest. I hope to get good news on Thursday at the scan xx

Yes that's perfect - under 2.5 is optimum for conception/pregnancy. Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Hi @MabelG great thank you so much 😊

Some fertility specialists say under 1 is best although the NHS guidelines are a bit higher, so you are doing great.

Yay thank you 😊

Super thrilled to say I had a great 12 week scan today. Measuring one day ahead, everything looking normal, just waiting for bloods now. So relieved and happy xxx
