7 week scan says I'm actually 5 weeks

Hello, today my partner surprised me with a 7 week private ultrasound.
Due to my last period I should have been 7 weeks and 3 days pregnant. The scan revealed I'm only 4-5 weeks, I don't understand why. I'm very disappointed and worried that we have lost our baby!
She said everything was healthy and normal but how is this?
All I read are the dreaded you know what stories , we are booked in for two week time.
Anybody experience this? I don't know how to cope as I'm filled with dread
My pregnancy test a week ago said 3+ meaning 5 week+

My scan did this; told me one date then at the next one I had jumped a few weeks - I think I read it something to do with the pregnancy being early and the growth etc

I've got my fingers crossed everything is ok!

5-7 weeks is far too early. I don't think these places should allow scans before 8-10 weeks. Early scans can be inconclusive and cause more worry than they're worth.

It's not ethical to make money doing scans before at least 8-10 weeks. This comes up several times a week on here.

The same thing happened to me OP. The scan was nearly two weeks out. I was 100% certain of the date of my last period. I raised this with my midwife and she said they just go with the dates on the scan regardless. I remember feeling the worry and frustration too. My baby was born perfectly healthy. Wishing you all the best for your pregnancy OP!

You ovulate two weeks after your period usually that’s why.

This. 8 weeks (not 7-8) should be the absolute earliest unless problems are suspected.

It'll probably be fine, OP, there are loads of reasons that an embryo might not measure exactly to dates. You might've ovulated late this cycle, for a start.

I scanned at 9 weeks for my 11 week scan... I put it down to delayed ovulation that month. Baby came on time going by scan dates

toffeebutterpopcorn · 30/03/2021 08:08

I was convinced that my due date was 2 weeks before my actual date - child was born 2 weeks before due date.

The dates are not an exact science - babies don’t all develop at the same speed and not every pregnancy is XXX days exactly.

A colleague was con told throughout her pregnancy that she was further along than she was convinced she was. Size of baby - if they only looked at the parents (6”2 and 6”4 respectively!)

Congrats on the pregnancy!

There is less margin for error with early dating scans but you could have ovulated later in the cycle.

MimiDaisy11 · 30/03/2021 08:56

I'm another who agrees with @CarefulNoww - it's every week these posts appear. I feel sorry for the people who pay an expense and then get nothing but anxiety, often for no reason as they have a scan a few weeks later and things are fine - apart from having spent weeks in limbo and worry.

I wouldn't worry yet as it's really common to be weeks out. Your date on ovulation could be wrong or the baby could just be developing a bit slower and will catch up soon. I was so sure of my date but when I went for 12 week scan was told a different due date.

Mama1980 · 30/03/2021 16:10

As others have said - I really do think places that offer these early scans for no medical reason are unethical.
It's very usual for dates to be a few weeks out. I had numerous early scans with ds2 for medical reasons and my dates see-sawed over 3 weeks until settling down.

PutOnAHappyFace · 30/03/2021 16:46

The best thing when this happens is to work out when you got your first positive test and work out if 4-5 weeks could be correct. It's very possible to get a positive at 3 weeks but no earlier than that.

Pregnancy measurements on scans still has the 2 weeks added on
PutOnAHappyFace · 30/03/2021 18:36

It's very possible your just early. Sometimes people get a faint positive and the scan dates don't match up but if I was you I wouldn't be thinking you was out of the game yet. Also some people get 3+ before they are 5 weeks so you might have been a little less. Ive had 4 miscarriages so hate to give people false hope but fingers crossed.

I really hope things work out for you.

HamFisted · 30/03/2021 19:07

The weeks indicator is only 93% accurate- women vary in their levels of HCG at a given gestation, even between pregnancies.

HamFisted · 30/03/2021 19:11

93% sounds like a lot, but remember that means that out of every 100 women who do the test, 7 will get an incorrect result. It's very possible that you're one of those seven.
