Reduced movements but fine when monitored

Hi,

I’m currently 36 weeks pregnant and I’m being induced next week due to having a small baby (below 3rd percentile).

The past few days I’ve noticed a real reduction in her movements. I’ve been to hospital twice in the past week to be monitored and everything is fine when I’m there. Her heart rate is fine and she moves when I’m attached to the monitor. However, as soon as the monitoring stops she stops moving. She used to be a really active baby and the change has worried me. I just don’t know what to do. I’m just so worried all of a sudden!!

Has anyone else experienced this?!

Thanks in advance for any help.

I’m a first time mum and we’ve had soo many issues throughout the pregnancy - severe hyperemesis (4 hospital admissions), they thought she possibly had a chromosomal abnormality (specifically Edward's syndrome) but then diagnosed with bilateral talipes, they’ve noticed she has a distended stomach so possibility of an operation when she’s born (they’re scanning again this week to check on her stomach again) and now they’ve said she’s just stopped growing.

We’ve taken everything in our stride so far and just dealt with it but now it’s coming to the end and her movements have stopped I just feel like something is wrong.

Again, thanks in advance.

Go back to the hospital and tell them exactly what you have written here. Trust your instincts.

Congratulations, I hope the rest of your pregnancy & labour are kinder to you, sounds like you’ve had a really tough time Flowers

When was the last time you were seen for reduced movements? Was that before or after your last scan? Did you have an invasive test to check the suggestion of Edwards syndrome?
I am concerned about the combination of factors you are describing.
When do you have another appointment? In the meantime please go straight back to the hospital if your little one’s movements are reduced again.

I'd do exactly this too, OP! Thanks Good luck x

No we decided against the invasive test. I have a history of arthrogryposis in the family (this causes bilateral talipes) which has been confused with Edwards syndrome before so we felt like this was the case again. The consultant also said she saw no other signs of Edwards on later scans.

I had a scan on Thursday and I was seen for reduced movements today and will probably go back tomorrow and just explain how worried I am.

Thanks for your help.

If you are worried then trust yourself and call them now for advice, it doesn't matter that you've already been seen today. Take care x

Please, please do go back tomorrow morning ( or even tonight) and explain how worried you are. A very small baby with 2 unusual features on scans who is now showing static growth needs to be extremely carefully monitored.
If you haven’t already had steroid injections that should be a priority because she is going to be born early.
If you want to PM me that is absolutely fine.
I hope you meet your precious daughter very soon. Follow your instincts and never apologise for asking for your baby’s safety to be checked.

Agree with everything the previous posters have said! ❤️

I also had severe hyperemesis with both pregnancies.

My most recent was born in Dec, I had it so bad I was vomiting bile and blood. Literally couldn't keep even a sip of water. I had to have b3/iron/potassium/magnesium infusions.
I lost a lot of weight. It was terrible. I was also induced and DD was small. I also experienced the reduced movement and then she would become active on the monitor. Literally no movement all day until I was on the monitor. It happened a few times. But baby was born healthy and happy, small but no issues. Labour was slow to actually begin but quick once it got started. 2.5 hours.
Hopefully you'll have a similar experience

NHS do say if you have the monitoring and are still not happy with the amount of movement then to call straight back. Don't put it off and be assertive and make sure you get checked out

@Paris93 thinking of you & hoping that you went back to the hospital and have a good plan now
